Keane: We Deserved to Win
Keane: We Deserved to Win
Saturday, 17th Oct 2009 19:22

Boss Roy Keane felt his side created enough chances to beat Swansea after Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Portman Road. Swans manager Paulo Sousa was happy with the point, despite his side taking an early lead.

Keane said: "We're making progress and this gives us something to build on. It's certainly not doom and gloom.

"The players are training well and I can't fault them, but we just can't seem to put the ball in the back of the net. We had good chances in the second half and should have won the game.

“The lads thought Beattie was offside and we didn't need to concede an early goal because Swansea are good at keeping possession.

"It was a bad goal to give away as well, a straight ball over the top but our keeper hardly had a save to make, so there are signs that we are getting there. We just need that win to give everyone a lift.

"Swansea keep the ball well. They have got good players, but we had the better chances and I don't think we looked like a side at the bottom of the table."

Keane says he expects Richard Wright to react positively to being dropped having been left out for the first time this season to allow Asmir Begovic to make his debut: "It's my job to make decisions and I like to surprise people sometimes. It's good for players to recharge their batteries and chill out for one or two days. But I know Richard and I know his reaction to being left out will be first class."

Meanwhile, Keane says that the loan deal which was close to being done towards the end of the week has collapsed. On Friday, the Blues boss felt an addition might be made to the squad before the Watford game on Tuesday.

Swansea manager Paulo Sousa says Town are in a false position: "Ipswich belong at the top, not the bottom, and they have got some very good players here.

"For that reason, I'm happy with one point, although I'm always happier when we win. In the first half we controlled the game better and could have scored more goals.

"We had more possession but in the second half we weren't as direct as I would have liked. Sometimes you need to risk a bit more and be a bit more direct.

"We have to attack space quicker and attack different areas of the box, but overall I was very proud and happy with the result.

"Ipswich are having a difficult time and you have to have a great personality to come to a place like this. I'm a winner and I like my players to have a winning mentality."

Hmm .. dissapointing. Happening all too often. I'm sticking by Roy but this run surely has to end against Watford. If we get to this time next week then I can't see how we can go on with Roy at the helm.

Tom12481, what would you rather he said, we didn't make defensive errors. Why complain when he is telling us as plain as day what went wrong. And he makes a valid point that we are making progress! apart from the goal we looked a reasonable defensive, possibly the reason Swansea did not have another shot on target. Enough bickering anyways, well done to the fans today, thought they were top notch.

Bring on Watford

I really cant see when we are going to get our first win, I dont like to Knock Ipswich but i have never seen them play so badly in the 18 years I have been going. I dont no why the hell he has got Trotter in the team could someone please explain ? I dont think he brings p**s all to the team he is slow and dont get stuck in as much as he should. The positives where the crowd seemed behind them alot more than in recent games. I hope we beat watford its going to be tough, they are going to be so full of confidence just winning at middlesborough.

Looks we making progress apart from one shot from Swansea not alot else from them. Good to see Wright back in the team.

Agree on Trotter...he was awful today. Slow, poor touch, bad passing...everything the Swansea midfield wasn't unfortunately.

Another home draw doesn't feel like progress to me.

Trotter tries his best, but I don't think he is good enough and I don't understand how he keeps in the team when other players seem to be punished by removal from the team/squad after a bad game or two. I think it is a big failure not to get a defensive ball-winner in the summer, we needed to replace Shumu with someone better! (not Healy!!)

Same with the defence, it should have been strengthened in the summer (not Delaney!). It was good to see D.Wright back today, where has he been?! I don't agree with dropping R.Wright

I also don't see how Keane can stay in post if we fail to win the next two (or one!) matches. Maybe someone new coming in could re-energise the team, organise them, put some confidence in them, make them feel wanted and get back to the way we are used to seeing Ipswich Town play.

Tractorboy82, you cant have seen many matches then?
Against Southampton last season at home we were rubbish. That was the worst I have seen, today we created more clear cut chances than Swansea but just did not make them count. Wickham and Trotter should have won the game but when your luck is out that is what happens.
Roll on tuesday.
In Keano we trust.

I won't get on the Trotter band wagon per se, but why are we playing a back four with a defensive midfielder just in front when we are at home. I would rather we tried and attakced our

Travelled down after work last night for this and tuesdays game. Definatly seen us play alot worse than today but still not great, Yep, definatly agree that Trotter was'nt the best today, thought he made a few decent tackles though but he is a tad on the slow side, phyisically and mentally!! Think, and i say this with a grudge, Garvan should be given a shot. I don't rate him that high to be honest but think he would maybe do a better job than Trotter at least until Norris returns. Maybe it was all the negative stuff on here, but i had mixed feelings about coming down, glad i did though to see it for myself, you do get the feeling that the lads are one bit of luck away from making it work but then so far away at same time! I was in the SBRS lower as normal and actually thought it was the best atmosphere for a wee while which i thought was a great effort, please keep it up for tuesday folks.COYB!

I'LL CONTINUE!
I'd rather we tried and attacked our way out of the trough, perhaps with a midfield man just behind the front two, particularly at home.
Anyway, showes how far we've dropped when a home draw to Swansea is seen as progress. (no disrespect to Swansea)

I think tuesday night is a must win game for Roy now..we're now over a quarter of the way into the season,it's almost november and still no win...it's amazing what a win can do for a team BUT how long do we give Roy to get that win?

(Well done on the 4-0 today Jimbo.)

OrkneyBlue added 20:44 - Oct 17
Agree lightningboy don't think Roy has much longer. Today was the first of 3 in a row must wins. A win on tuesday and Plymouth away may just help him but anything less than 6 points from those and i think it may be curtains. Want him to suceed but whats best for the town must come first.

Wish Garvan could come back in team. We are crying out for some creativity and he would provide it.

If you think Roy Keane will walk you are in dreamland. He has a wonderful house a wonderful life and a job in the comfort zone why would he quit ? My biggest worry is that we have no pattern to our play as in my opinion we have the players. Look at the line ups of Blackpool, Scunthorpe and Watford today they are not a patch on our players but they all have fantastic teamwork. At the moment we are a disjointed team especially with so many changes every week. I hate to say it but Div 1 a reality now.

A number of things to be positive about today. The return of David Wright, the performance of Rosenior and the link up play down the right with Counago and Peters, the impact of Wickham, the defensive solidity of the 2nd half, the unity and support of the crowd etc. If we were probably anywhere else in the table than where we are now, there wouldn't be a problem with today in isolation. But here's the rub. We aren't anywhere else in the table. We are adrift and the horrible fact is that we are all going to have to confront the fact that we just can't go on like this for much longer without the need for change becoming simply a no brainer frankly. I am desperate for Keane to succeed just like I would be for any other ITFC manager and hate the idea of becoming a QPR style hire and fire outfit but am still bemused by a view that to consider a change is "madness" and even more so by the blind "in Keane we trust" faith (hope?) of supporters. This is not Roy Keane's Ipswich, its OUR Ipswich and , frankly, we have bigger things to worry about than falling into the media obsession with one personality. The case against sticking with RK just gets bigger every day and that's not just about being bottom with no win in god knows how long (though that frankly is pretty bleak in itself) . No , I am talking about all the choices and judgements along the way that step by step are condemning us to oblivion. Take today for example. D Wright suddenly in from the cold (looking every bit as sound as before his bizarre exile) ?Smith ahead of Bruce? Wright not even on the bench? Trotter ahead of everyone else?

I was at the press conference after the game and I was less that convinced by his explanation of the whole goalkeeping thing. His defensive , "gaze of Mordor" destruction of even the most timid of hack enquiry might make for great spectator sport ( even I found myself falling under its spell) but it smacked of an increasingly desperate anger , personal meltdown even. This man is not someone I think who knows instinctively how to build confidence and capability around him, all he's ever done is destroy it on the pitch if it threatened him, which is an entirely different thing. On the pitch we remain a team that is a long way short of the sum of its individual parts (as every visiting manager observes) and I just don't just buy the convenient narrative about going one step back before two forwards blah blah.

It is not an act of heresy or negativity to suggest as you teeter on the edge that the interests of the team , club and supporters should count more than proving the ability or otherwise of its manager. With each passing debacle, the argument of the "in RK we trust" school seems to be to be little more than a change would just makes things worse. Maybe that's true. Maybe we're f***ed anyway. But maybe not and , as I have argued on here before, there will come a point when the risk of the status quo exceeds that of change ( Barnsley reached that point quicker than us and look what that has done for them) . After the Newcastle game I said that point will arrive on the 31st October after the Derby game when we are a third into the whole season. Less than 10 points then and , well, you do the maths to get to 50 points plus. The only madness would be Marcus not seriously considering what a change would look like and who might be available before its all too late. As Keane himself has acknowledged, he can have no one else to blame. Whatever happens from here, he has squandered the most perfect of legacies.

lukeym18, reading the posts hear i don't think anyone is going to turn there backs on ITFC. We all support ITFC through thick and thin. My personal opinion is that i too think a win is just around the corner, and i definatly don't want Keane to walk/be sacked but you have to admit if, and it is an if at the moment, the win does'nt come soon the board will be in a difficult position because if teams above us gain points we are looking for them to lose a few at the same time as us winning. Anyhoo, 2-0 Town on Tues and hopefully that will be the end of that!

Its becoming all to much now. "we're improving". Every week the same story but still no change.

"we should of won" but haven't, its starting to worry me that if we stay loyal which is a nice concept and admirable but lets face it, its not getting us any where apart from league one! And fast.

Keeping faith doesn't make you a bad supporter. The 'faith fans' might be the ones who brag this team into league one. We're not turning our backs on the team and defiantly not on Ipswich! But its becoming to painful now to look at the table and we need to address the issue. Before its too late!

All i can say is that i hope i wrong and we can pull together, but doubt it.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ ...

Time to eat some humble pie and get Garvan back in along side Leadbitter to add some calmness to our play. Trotter simply isn't good enough, yet he starts every week. I really don't get it.

very pleased to see wright bk in the team.
but just watching ipswich this year there do not seem to play with the urgency and pace that use to scare teams when they came to portman road.
also i dont understand why del boy trotter is in the team he brings nothin.

however the team is playing better and it was very pleasing hearing the fans gettin behind the team was very good atmospher 2day. and lets all hope for 3 points agaist watford. coyb
