Keane: We Deserved to Win
Keane: We Deserved to Win
Saturday, 17th Oct 2009 19:22

Boss Roy Keane felt his side created enough chances to beat Swansea after Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Portman Road. Swans manager Paulo Sousa was happy with the point, despite his side taking an early lead.

Keane said: "We're making progress and this gives us something to build on. It's certainly not doom and gloom.

"The players are training well and I can't fault them, but we just can't seem to put the ball in the back of the net. We had good chances in the second half and should have won the game.

“The lads thought Beattie was offside and we didn't need to concede an early goal because Swansea are good at keeping possession.

"It was a bad goal to give away as well, a straight ball over the top but our keeper hardly had a save to make, so there are signs that we are getting there. We just need that win to give everyone a lift.

"Swansea keep the ball well. They have got good players, but we had the better chances and I don't think we looked like a side at the bottom of the table."

Keane says he expects Richard Wright to react positively to being dropped having been left out for the first time this season to allow Asmir Begovic to make his debut: "It's my job to make decisions and I like to surprise people sometimes. It's good for players to recharge their batteries and chill out for one or two days. But I know Richard and I know his reaction to being left out will be first class."

Meanwhile, Keane says that the loan deal which was close to being done towards the end of the week has collapsed. On Friday, the Blues boss felt an addition might be made to the squad before the Watford game on Tuesday.

Swansea manager Paulo Sousa says Town are in a false position: "Ipswich belong at the top, not the bottom, and they have got some very good players here.

"For that reason, I'm happy with one point, although I'm always happier when we win. In the first half we controlled the game better and could have scored more goals.

"We had more possession but in the second half we weren't as direct as I would have liked. Sometimes you need to risk a bit more and be a bit more direct.

"We have to attack space quicker and attack different areas of the box, but overall I was very proud and happy with the result.

"Ipswich are having a difficult time and you have to have a great personality to come to a place like this. I'm a winner and I like my players to have a winning mentality."

Well, I did see a bit more effort and passion from the players, hell I even saw RK get off the bench to swear at the ref, first time I've seen him on his feet looking like he cares all season. Is he going to get ANOTHER goalie in now because the new bloke let a goal in? (What happens in Jan when these two loan goalies go back and Richard Wright's confidence is in tatters because of RK's genius management?!) Aside from that, we weren't as bad as we have been, we could have won but we missed 2 or 3 sitters but at least one big positive to take from today is that we didn't concede a goal at the end and lose a point..... I thought the support was better today too (did laugh at the reaction when we scored though, you'd have thought we'd have just won the cup final, shows how desperate we've all been for a goal!). Here's hoping, c'mon you Blues.....

Hi,
WashbrookBlue- a very well reasoned argument/statement. Even I am becoming bored with my own argument - that it seems to be written in the current Ipswich Town's manager's contract that 'thou shalt never play the same team twice in a season'. The truth of the matter is that the players are scared 'sh**less' of Mr Keane. My first ever Ipswich match was in 1956 - Ipswich 6 Torquay 0. I didn't miss many games after that [watching on my uncle's shoulders from the 'Chicken Run']. I am proud to say I was there for the glory years - but I am also here in the absolutely horrible years too. BUT - we bought our programme then, and only needed a pen to mark the very odd and rare change to the established team due to injuries etc. The players knew who they were playing and, perhaps more importantly, what they were playing for - the honour of playing for IPSWICH TOWN. That meant playing good, decent, on the ground, passing, attractive football. Not the 'caught in the headlights' 'boot it up the field to anyone just so long as I don't have to deal with it' football that we're getting at PR at the moment. A change of manager isn't just essential, it's just plain common sense. The players are scared of the manager - please someone prove to me that that isn't the case.
I'll be Blue 'til I die, but sometimes I weep.

i cant see how our MANAGER and some of our fans are content with a point today, for god sake lets all wake up, we are argubly one of the bigger teams in the championship and were all content with drawing at home to swansea.

we are not good enough, signings not good enough, management not good enough, the sooner everyone see's this the better otherwise we'll be swapping places with the scum.
I hope im proved wrong and at the end of the day i just want what is best for our club, us fans, not 'roy keanes ipswich'

well after 6 home games now i and still havnt seen a good 45 mins let alone 90 and buy the looks of it even loan sinings will bring much

the reason is simple our players need to hold postion better especially in the midfield, when the ball was on the left jamie peteres was running down the center line of the bloody pitch were the left winginger for swansea was out feild on his tod with 3 hectares of grass to paly in.

you just cant play football like that you need to be spread out more that way you will get more time on the ball and plenty of space to play in.

its like watching sunday leaque football not profesionals.

and RK should no this as he used to play for man u for gods sake.

my mate went to doncaster and the second half they spread out and thats when they started playing better stuff.

i still recon martin is are best bet for the left given half a chance unforchantly early on games he was making decent runs and the fowards were still straching there a@ses up field.

rossy looks handy at right back i must say but today grants corners and free kicks wernt up to stcratch.

i still say the players we have are good enough it just needs some one to start pushing them in the right direction and unforchantly roy you have got to next sat to sort it or its good buy from me .

i personaly dont want to see town in the 3rd tear of football but carrying on the way we are and thats were we will be.

any body says any different wants to get there head out of the sand i think

oh its nice to see some old boys on here like dalian ect and romeo now they used to run there haert out for the club even though it was under poor managment

Getting a little tired of hearing "we should have won".

I said a few weeks ago that imo Keane had til the end of October to prove himself, as we all know we have a run of games that we should consider winnable, well we lost to Barnsley, drew against Swansea, Tuesday nights game against Watford & away to Plymouth are "massive" games for Keane, I like many others wanted Keane to be given the time to be a success at ITFC, but now believe Keanes time is running out, its ok "keeping the faith" & saying "we were unlucky" or "we should of won" but how much longer can this go on?

As others have said: "Poor signings" "Poor management of players" "Lack of team cohesion" "Poor formation" the list goes on & on.....

(just as a side issue, on the first home league game of the season against Leicester we bought my 4yr old son a duvet set from the Town shop, he loves it, but I'm beginning to think its a jinx!!, it's obviously been washed several times, but really think I should take it back! WE HAVEN'T WON WHILST ITS BEEN ON HIS BED!!) LOL!!

Some positives in yesterdays game but still lots of questions. Yes David Wright performed very well but why has it taken this long to get back into the team. New gaolkeeper who had very little to do but while he was left hopelessly exposed by poor defending (Smith) for their goal to allow the ball to go under his body at the near post is hardly a good sign. I agree Richard Wright has made a few mistakes but does leaving him out of the side do anything for his confidence?. I have taken the view all season that things were going to come right and our present posistion was just a blip, well i'm now starting to doubt this and if Keane has got what it takes to turn thing around. For large periods of the game the tream was lost and where was Keane? sat on the bench yelling the odd instuction to the team. Compare this with the Swansea manager who spent the whole game in his technical area driving the team forward> I still believe we can turn this around but how much longer can we give Keane. He should be able to do it but the simple fact is that he isn't. I believed before the Swansea game that 7 points from the next 3 games was the minium we could get without pressing the panic button that now means a win against Waford on Tuesday an done away at Plymouth on Saturday. If we can't get that we are in trouble and Marcus Evans will ahve to make a big call about where he goes from here. Lets get behind the Roy and the team and hope things come right. BUT WE ARE RUNNING OUT OF TIME.

U know the first 14 minutes i hated the game but once we scored and stead of pissing about we tryed to get the second after that we were better i found the problem was that swansea had a lot of pace when the ball came up to the front our defence just could not catch them but keano realy enjoyed the game cant wait till tuesday and also well done pablo for your goal

p.s well done fans for getting behind the town

Plenty of new managers have walked into a team low on confidence and short on ideas and turned it around quickly. Mark Robins, as someone else has pointed out, is doing it at Barnsley and Joe Royle did it here when Burley was made to pay for crimes less terrible against the town. So, Mr Keane, only new blood in the dug out will save us as we stumble, blind, towards Halloween.

Time to give Garvan a run in the team he is the one player we have who can play a defence splitting pass.Yes he is a yard short of pace but that was never a problem for Jim Magilton.Come on Roy give the boy a chance.

Lightning boy, get over Magilton for christ sake! He's a bit like Rhodes, gone and out of town's life. If you love tragic that much piss off down to loftus road and support QPR!

I was listening to the radio on my way home yesterday. Kevin Beattie was pointing out that we don't have a 'defence coach'. He sort of offered himself! While I don't see RK and KB being the dream team (can you imagine them getting on ??), Beattie might have a point

A win at Watford & Roy will keep the job. If we draw or lose, he's gone. Let's see what the players reaction is? One win won't do it now. We are in serious trouble & could go down. Not even the scum were in this shape last year. We're the only team in any division not to win. It's the clearest display of failiure you could ever want to see & that won't be lost on Marcus. Wouldn't be surprised if Clegg goes or is marginalised too. Such a shame but it's been staring us in the face for weeks.

Well, the first game i've managed to get to since West Brom and its a marked improvement on that performance that's for sure. I've read all the comments on here, some are litter, most are fairly spot on.

I think the Trotter answer is simply that we don't have anyone else in that mould. Not the calibre of player to partner Leadbitter, Norris will clearly assume this role when fit. If Garvan had a heart the size of a dustbin lid and could tackle without any fear of putting the opponent on the physios bench then he'd be a starter every week because the lad can pass. But, he doesn't and i'm hoping Keane's kick up the backside is what he needs to get that fire in him. He's never really found his mould as a central midfielder. I for one would love to see him back in the side, hopefully with a bit more direction and understanding of what it is he's there to do and the type of midfielder he should be. Swansea's central midfield were good technically but very lightweight. I should get my boots on, i'd have put Dyer on the deck in the first 5 in a Keane fashion and gave him something to fear the rest of the game. No-one did that today - we need it.

Better defensive display except the first 10 minutes...what a howler! Smith and Mcauley...sort your distribution out! You're making Titus Bramble look like a playmaker. I know you're jittery, but christ!

Pablo Counago, quality today. Great work rate along with Walters.

Peters, better from the bench for the last 20 - 25 minutes for me. Rosenior and him were exposed far too often down that flank today although they both looked good going forward.

Great to see David Wright back. Him being left out is the one myth for me under Keane, oh, and Richard Wright not even making the bench today - not sure about that one!

Wickham!! You're maasive, get your hand in the face of the man up your ass and hold the freakin ball then play. Basics!

Watford Tuesday for a definite 3 points?

Changes. Edwards in for Peters. Healy/Colback/Garvan in for Trotter?

Keaneish added 11:51 - Oct 18
Actually, i'll revise that.

Edwards in for Quinn. Peters to switch flanks, he has been playing well.

Who'd be a manager!?

Have we actually forgotten what Keane was brought in for? To gain promotion to the Premiership within two seasons - how likely is that! Its becoming a case that success for Roy Keane now depends on winning one match and everything will be fine.

No it won't, even if we gain two victories against Watford and Plymouth it will merely be the start of avoiding relagation. The remit was to gain promotion not avoid relagation. If finish 17th this season and 12th next season under Keane, does this count as a success? Judging by a number of the comments on this board it would.

Roy Keane's man management skills and team selections may eventually be good enough to avoid relagation (just), but they certainly are not good enough to get us up. Roy Keane's aim was promotion, not simply maintaining the Status quo which was achieved by Magilton (who then paid the price). Roy Keane should go now, not just for the short term aims but also for the long term ambitions of the club.

Keaneish added 12:11 - Oct 18
PSG Blue...quite simply...No, you're wrong. Sack Keane now? Rubbish.

I'd rather be in this position now with the squad we have under Keane than where we were last season with Magilton. Square pegs round holes...no thanks.

Stick with it, it'll bear fruit soon guranteed. It's starting to gel.

PSGBlue added 12:26 - Oct 18
Keaneish, I don't want to see Magiliton back no way. But having witnessed yesterdays performance first hand can anyone really see a turn in fortunes that will get us promoted within two seasons? Whilst Keane may turn it around in order to get us to safety, he will never IMHO get us into the top six with his methods of team selection and man management.

My main grumble is his treatment of the players, a couple of bad games and you are out of the squad not just on the bench. A number of examples being Healey, Delanley, Garven and yesterday Richard Wright. "Hey, Richard meet your new team mate and by the way stay at home Saturday and listen to game on Radio Suffolk!" Richard Wright must really feel a valued member of this squad! Shocking treatment for a player who saved Roy Keane from major embarrassment at WBA.

Surely the right way to have gone would have been. "Richard here's your new team mate, I want to see an improvement in your performance in the next couple of matches as you now competition for your place" That may of spured Richard Wright on. Roy Keane needs to go now before its too late.

im actaully quite up for keane going to be honest. some of his decisions so far have been quite frankly (p.g) barmy
1) jordan rhodes. bangs in goals for fun wherever he is. sold for 250,000. +plus add ons)
2)brings in a striker who rarely plays (priskin)
3)leaky defense. so what does he do? bring in 2 loan keepers.
4)rants at reporters who ask fair questions
5)says one thing, backtracks and says the oppoisite (promotion possible this year, hang on got a lot of work to do here....happy with the players ive got, hang on, some of you will never play for me again...)
6)still searching for a win, and i have a gut feeling he doesnt know who his best team is
7)says i dont need anyone in the transfer market then goes we need 4/5 new players (bk to 5 really)

i really cant see this slump ending till somthing drastic happens

bostonusablue added 12:52 - Oct 18
Rhodes was actually sold for 850k. And, as I stated before he is scoring goals in a lower division, not the Championship; we cannot compare the two. We could only judge the decision to let him go if he was knocking the goals in in our division.

I will back whatever manager we have, but think that if we do not win on Tuesday, then RK will be sacked.

Agree on the Richard Wright decision. Couldn't believe it when i turned up at the ground yesterday and he never made the bench. Keane seems to drop players right to the very back of the queue and then you have to work your way back up the rankings. Fine in one respect meaning you know you have to put in 100% week in week out on the pitch, which i like, but not great for harmony! Still, a far cry from Magilton's complacent decisions.

Priskin seems to be on international duty every week so not too fussed that he's on the bench every week. Rhodes, would like to have seen him play more for us at this level, but it was good money.

As for our best 11, add Norris, Edwards, Wright and Garvan if he sorts himself out and that was it.

Anyone see Tommy Smith's heading in the warm up? He was hitting the half way line everytime with his clearances...now sort your passing out!

Come on Keaneo. No-one really wants you to go. Just start winning some frickin' games!

Can't wait for Norris and Civelli to get back- we need them going forward...then we can soon see the (IMO) best team we have-
Begovic/Wright
Rosenior-- New CB-- Bruce--D.Wright
Edwards--Norris--Leadbitter--Civelli
Counago--Walters

Even with that team we'd have very good back-up of Peters,Priskin and Quinn.
Roll on Tuesday - UP The Town !!!
