Keane Again Unhappy With Defending
Keane Again Unhappy With Defending
Saturday, 19th Sep 2009 21:29

Boss Roy Keane felt his side again conceded bad goals as they drew 3-3 at Doncaster Rovers. The South Yorkshire side's manager Sean O'Driscoll was similarly unhappy with his backline.

Keane said: "I think we gave bad goals away. You always think if you score three goals away from home you're going to win the game and, in terms of going forward, this was our most encouraging display.

"We looked threatening and I can't say that about some of our performances this season.

"I certainly think we had the better of the chances and, when you are 3-2 up with five or 10 minutes to go, you would hope you can see the game out, but that's the way it's going for us at the moment."

The Town manager admitted that it’s going to take a while for his team to gel: "It's certainly going to be one of those seasons where it's going to be a long, tough battle for us and we're going to have to give some players the benefit of the doubt as they settle into the football club, both on and off the pitch.

"We've got one or two injuries and we're lacking a bit of confidence, as you would expect, but no one is going to hand us a victory. We've got to keep battling away and do it for ourselves."

The Blues boss was chuffed for Jack Colback, who netted his first senior goal: "I'm pleased for Jack. That was his first goal. He could go on and be a very good footballer. Tamás scored his second goal for us and he will stake a claim for place in the team next week. That's what I want, I'm desperate for players to stake a claim for a place in the side.

"Our subs did well for us and that's what you want from your bench, players to come on and make a difference. It was an encouraging display, but we've got a lot of catching up to do."

Keane said he couldn’t recall former Manchester United team-mate Quinton Fortune scoring a goal as good as his late equaliser during their time together at Old Trafford: "He bloody didn't, no! Not even in training. Don't worry, I'll be seeing him in a minute!"

Rovers boss Sean O'Driscoll was disappointed with his side’s overall display: "I thought it was a poor performance.

"We didn't get out of first gear and we haven't played like that for a long time. You can talk about the goals we scored, but they hide a multitude of sins.

"We pride ourselves on our level of performance and I didn't think it was anywhere near what we are capable of.

"I thought we lacked ideas and didn't do a lot of things that we've done well week in, week out."

O'Driscoll was also unhappy with his team’s defending: "We didn't mark the thrower on the first goal. Our line for the freekick [for Town's second] was poor and we didn't challenge for the third goal.

"There's not much they can do about Quinton Fortune's strike, and if they had scored that sort of goal against us you would have to hold your hands up. But they [Town's goals] are the sort you can't concede in this division."

Buelass7 I know what you are saying re a poll, i think it would be interesting at this time to get two lists one pro RK one anti, available for us all to see, then see who jumps ship when /if things change regarding the progress of the team. We are all intitled to our opinions, we live in a free country, i for one honestly believe RK will not succeed with Town ,i'll stand by that , and will be interested to see the reactions of the pro,s if when it all ends in tears.Equally i will hold my hand up and admit the lack of faith was a mistake should things pan out well. How about that ,lets get hats in the ring !.

Hee hee .. U just can not judge RK on 8 games .. Simple. 2 year plan people & we are at the begining of a very exciting re-building process. I personally am so so grateful to Evans, Clegg & Keane for what that are trying 2 do for our wounderful club .. Without there intervention we would almost certainly done a Norwich in the very near future. We were a very average CCC .. Fact .. & getting worse & flat broke.. So thank u ME SC & RK, that win will come & with it confidence. Have faith my blue bro's :-)

cmon boys now now.
Ive figured it out.............
Keane comes in with his 'hard man' ways, all our are not used to it, dont like it and dont perform!
Soon (if not starting with the Doncaster) they will start geting useed to it and perform bettter than they ever have as individuals before! His signings are playing well because they came hereafter speaking to Roy and know how he intends to run the club!

Soon we will start winning ..handsomley

personally i for one see this as a great result
first away point
3 goals scored
donny! are bogey side over the last few seasons
yes i would have loved our first win but surely the slide has changed 2 games undeafeated now so a little run is on and we are scoring goals which is better yes we may still have a few issues to get over but if we can have the same sort of 14-15 players playing week in week out then we will be flying up the table no team is easy to beat in this league and anybody will beat anybody
OH AND ONE THING CAN I SAY IS THAT NEARLY EVERY HEADLINE THERE ARE AT LEAST 2-3 POSTINGS SLATING OUR MANAGER ERM WHEN CAN I EVER RECALL A HEADLINE OF "KEANE IS SH@T PLEASE COMMENT BELOW!!!!
SEE YOU GUYS AT THE BLADES A WK ON TUESDAY NICE TO SEE A LITTLE INVASION OF THE BLUE ARMY AT MARKHAM MOOR MCDONALDS ON THE A1 NEAR RETFORD ON SAT EVENING REFUELING FOR THE TREK BACK HOME BLUE ARMY

I think that there are a number of people on this site who confuse 'making excuses' with 'giving reasons'. I don't believe that RK is making excuses, I believe that he is giving honest answers to the questions put to him.

I too was at the game. My opinion on players =

Delaney. If he's a left back, so am I.
Smith. Scared to do anything, and it showed.
Martin. Lots of running around, loosing posession and crap final ball.
Pablo & Walters. Need to learn the offside rule.
Rosenior. Has potential
Quinn. What is the point of him?

Best players . Peters, Colback and Leadbetter. Peters was a man possessed

I'm with Steve01777 - it was 'only' a draw, but as he said - first away point, 3 goals scored for the first time this season, let alone away from home, and Donny ARE a major bogey side for us. I think our new team may be starting to click - just need the defence to tighten up!

Mind you, there is a lot to be said for a 4-3 win rather than a 1-0 ..... more exciting, but a bit much for the poor old ticker, lol

Wasn't any one concerned at the way we conceded our first two goals? Had they been quality goals like Quinton Fortunes Strike then maybe we could say fair enough... but laspes in concentration have constantly caused us goals. Its not to say that our defenders are Pony, its like they don't have confidence in each other. Why did Delaney come for a ball that Wrighty had covered? Why didn't anyone get a touch of Martin Woods long range shot?

I agree with you, NW10. Stand back and admire, seemed to be the defenders remit for the game.

I am afraid that until we get TWO new centre backs the problem will not be solved. I know you all love Bruce and I do for his enthusiasm but he is not big enough for a centre back and always prone to error and rashness. Bit worried about our keeper as well thought he should have had two of the goals on Saturday. No points from the next two games which is highly likely and we are in a mess we will struggle to get out of.

its gonna be a long hard season. Glad to see people's expectations have calmed down from the end of last season though.

the problems are clearly at the back. have been for the past few seasons.

need a Paul Robinson type in the mix, someone who takes no prisoners...interestingly I tried to sign Rosenior for us on Champ Man but his wage demands were too high - glad to see that reality is not that harsh

come on you bloooooooooS!

1st goal was down to wrights, 2nd and 3rd were down to midfielders not getting in front of the ball, yes we need a better centre half (or 2) but i wouldn't blame them for the goals on saturday
