Keane: No Complaints at Result and Looking at Up to Four Signings
Keane: No Complaints at Result and Looking at Up to Four Signings
Saturday, 29th Aug 2009 19:09

Boss Roy Keane had no complaints at the result after his side’s 1-1 home draw with Preston North End. The Town manager says he is looking sign three or four new players before the transfer window closes on Tuesday.

Keane said: “We huffed and puffed and brought all our three substitutes on to try and win the game.

"But I can't have any complaints about the result. If anything, Preston looked more dangerous on the break.

"It was frustrating, but I don't think we did enough to win the game. We had a lot of half chances but the hardest part of football is putting the ball in the back of the net and we didn't do that in the second half.

"When Preston went down to 10 men, it should have been easier in terms of moving the ball a bit quicker and more penetration, but we huffed and puffed and never really opened them up.

"We had no player today with the quality that could go and get a goal for us, so I can have no complaints over the result.

"The effort was there, I can't fault the players for that, but we lacked the quality in the final third and that is what football is all about.

“I suppose this game shows why we're desperately trying to add to our squad. At the moment we're nowhere near but I'm expecting a busy couple of days. I certainly won't be putting my feet up and hopefully I can bring three, maybe four, players in before Tuesday.

"I have a very good idea of the areas I want to strengthen and there's a lot of hard work ahead."

Sunderland pair Carlos Edwards and Grant Leadbitter have been in talks with the Blues in the latter part of the week with personal terms understood to be the sticking point. The pair are certain to have to take significant drops in pay when moving from the Premier League to the Championship.

Preston boss Alan Irvine was unhappy at the red card shown to Callum Davidson for handball: "I thought it was a poor decision. We're told you have to make your body bigger - that's the criteria for it to be a red card.

"But Callum had his arms in front of his body. It was a natural reaction when someone smashes the ball at you from four yards."

Irvine was pleased with his team's response to being a man down: "They're a terrific group of players. They know their limitations, but they also know they'll get rewarded for working hard.

"They're prepared to do the horrible jobs to make sure we stay in games. We spoke about it at half-time and said things could go one of two ways. We could either feel sorry for ourselves and be a bit angry about what had happened or go out and get a good result with one man short.

"That was what we did and, if we'd chosen our passes better on the counter-attack, it might have been a different result."

My Dad and I travelled all the way up from Plymouth yesterday to watch the match (6 hours each way) hoping that the Prston match was going to be the catalyst for our season getting going. I hav to say that the negatives outwayed the positives.

I know it is early days under Keane but I was really hoping for more than what we got to watch. I was really impressed with Colback as he is obviously a decent player. Gets stuck in, passes the ball with pace and has a desire to win the ball and play it. Our best outfield player by a long way. Pabs did a good job of holding the ball up and felt he deserved to score. Priskin looked a little lost at times, but that will improve with time, strikers need time to gel and get to know each others games, too many times Tamas and Pabs were going for the same ball.

Martin and Walters did ok in spells. If Martin was built like Walters he would be a frightening prospect to play against. Just a little too light weight although having said that it doesnt stop him throwing himself into challenges. They are also direct and look to go past players which is encouraging.

Now the negatives. Trotter, has the no vision in my opinion, he throws hisself in to tackles and can be reasonable producutive doing that, however as soon as he gets the ball if he plays a ball further than 10 yards it goes to an opposition player. I cant remember him finding one of our players once through the whole game. He has all the physical attributes to be a decent CC player but I am sorry to say he is not putting all together.

Defence? What can i say? McCauley moves like he has been shot with a horse tranquiliser, slow, pedestrian and his distribution was way off. He can however head the ball, but just not to one of our players! Pim played ok I suppose, again looks lacking in confidence and his distribution was wayward too. Bruce played well but looked liek he felt uncomfortable playing out of position, hes a CB so play him there instead of McCauley. Tommy Smith was the player I was most disappointed with, I had read good things about him and was pleased to hear his name on the team sheet in place of Delaney. Unfortunately he didnt live up to expectations. I may be wrong but having watched the game I feel he has no pace, no vision and cant play a ball further than 10 yards (similair to Trotter). You could see Martin getting frustrated with him a number of times during the match.

Wrighty was as usual excellent and kept us in the game again! He is our one and only premiership quality player.

Substitues? Stead didnt look like he wanted to play, Quinn showed industry and a desire to get at them which was good and Wickham didnt get into the game at all, lots of pressure on his shoulders at the moment which I dont think helps.

I feel like my negatives outway the positives too much in my post but I have to say that both my Dad and I were so disappointed that we couldnt kill them off especially when they went down to 10 men.

We need atleast 4 new players, CB, CM, STRIKER, LB

Agree with Keane re needing 4 new players. Not entirely sure about his comments re the result. Thought we played half decent at times and may have just deserved the three. It certainly wasn't as bad as some are saying, although it certainly was disjointed!

You can moan at a player if he does not put a 100% in. But to moan at people for perceived lack of talent just makes u a horrible c##t. Let down by our 12th man yet again. Unfortunately it's the only part of the TEAM we cant replace. Come on people, wise up!

No confidence in Keane, no confidence in the team, no confidence in 'supposed' new signings. This club is going down the drain. League 1 next season - anyone who can't see that is living in a fantasy world imo.

All we need is a holding midfielder (roy keane like) in the centre of the park controlling the midfield as i think trotter thinks hes ronaldo all of a sudden. We need a decent centre back to replace mcauley i thought he was solid last season but hes a complete different player this season? to play along side bruce. i think we need a quick attacking winger as i dont think martins fit. and finally an experienced striker who can put the ball in the back of the net. (should have got lita when he was free). But come on town have faith look when keane joined sunderland he bought in 5 players on one day! so keep faith. SUPER KEANOS BLUE AND WHITE ARMY!

Starting to get impatient now, need signings if we are going to start getting some points on the board, apart from the 2nd half at Coventry we haven't created half the amount of chances we need to win games. Keeping my trust in RK but we need to start meeting players wage demands to bring in fresh blood.

There'll be no new signings today, I mean it's a Bank Holiday so no offices will be open and everybody is sitting on their big fat backsides drinking cider and having barabecues. How boring. The sooner Keane goes the better.

UEFA81 - you are a knob. RK will be a legend for the right reasons whereas tw*ts like you will always just be tw*ts. Only thing wrong with labelling you and others like you as tw*ts is that tw*ts are useful whereas you are as welcome at my home as a pukey green-yellow budgie.

I think most of us are resigned to getting no significant signings now .This season will be a struggle, and those who go along with ''promotion in two seasons''are kidding themselves, we are going the wrong way !Keano will have his work cut out to keep the egg off his face with his statement that any half decent manager can get a team Mid table ,........JM must be laughing up his sleeve .

bluelad, when Keane gets us relegated (or rather when Keane walks) you may realise that you are actually the things you called me. Face it - he's useless, clueless and arrogant. yes, he did well at Sunderland but it's not gonna happen at PR. IMO, the sooner he is gone the better. I've been a Town fan for 26 years and this is the worst team I have ever had the misfortune to lay eyes on. Get real.
