Keane: No Complaints at Result and Looking at Up to Four Signings
Keane: No Complaints at Result and Looking at Up to Four Signings
Saturday, 29th Aug 2009 19:09

Boss Roy Keane had no complaints at the result after his side’s 1-1 home draw with Preston North End. The Town manager says he is looking sign three or four new players before the transfer window closes on Tuesday.

Keane said: “We huffed and puffed and brought all our three substitutes on to try and win the game.

"But I can't have any complaints about the result. If anything, Preston looked more dangerous on the break.

"It was frustrating, but I don't think we did enough to win the game. We had a lot of half chances but the hardest part of football is putting the ball in the back of the net and we didn't do that in the second half.

"When Preston went down to 10 men, it should have been easier in terms of moving the ball a bit quicker and more penetration, but we huffed and puffed and never really opened them up.

"We had no player today with the quality that could go and get a goal for us, so I can have no complaints over the result.

"The effort was there, I can't fault the players for that, but we lacked the quality in the final third and that is what football is all about.

“I suppose this game shows why we're desperately trying to add to our squad. At the moment we're nowhere near but I'm expecting a busy couple of days. I certainly won't be putting my feet up and hopefully I can bring three, maybe four, players in before Tuesday.

"I have a very good idea of the areas I want to strengthen and there's a lot of hard work ahead."

Sunderland pair Carlos Edwards and Grant Leadbitter have been in talks with the Blues in the latter part of the week with personal terms understood to be the sticking point. The pair are certain to have to take significant drops in pay when moving from the Premier League to the Championship.

Preston boss Alan Irvine was unhappy at the red card shown to Callum Davidson for handball: "I thought it was a poor decision. We're told you have to make your body bigger - that's the criteria for it to be a red card.

"But Callum had his arms in front of his body. It was a natural reaction when someone smashes the ball at you from four yards."

Irvine was pleased with his team's response to being a man down: "They're a terrific group of players. They know their limitations, but they also know they'll get rewarded for working hard.

"They're prepared to do the horrible jobs to make sure we stay in games. We spoke about it at half-time and said things could go one of two ways. We could either feel sorry for ourselves and be a bit angry about what had happened or go out and get a good result with one man short.

"That was what we did and, if we'd chosen our passes better on the counter-attack, it might have been a different result."

Im starting to worry.

We need so many new players and where are we going to get them and at what cost.

Priskin 1.7 mill delaney 750k have both been poor

we sell haybnes 400k , quinn maybe 250k pabs maybe 500k garvan 500k-1 mill
wright 500k .

not alot of money coming in , and poor signings so far that look very pricey.

If we want quality we are going to have to pay silly money for the CCC.

we cant get PL players and CCC clubs will take the pee on fees

Just hope gio comes on loan . that will be a big lift to everyone.

Simply don't understand how anyone can say Smith isn't good enough. Firstly look at the alternatives; Delaney or Thatcher. Secondly, consider that he is the only member of our defence who always looks to make a simple pass first, i.e. he doesn't just hoof it a la the aforementioned, McCauley, Bruce and even more so, Pim. Yes, he makes mistakes (mainly related to his positional play), but given a consistent run these will be ironed out. He will become the best and most cultured defender we have had since our Prem years. Bruce is good, but Smith has the potential to be a first class defender and possibly captain.

Trotter is also considerably better than certain people seem to think. His only major fault at this stage is his age. Again, his positional play is poor, but he always looks to make a pass. Sometimes this is a simple side pass, but he tries hard to get things moving - a characteristic that is sorely lacking in most of our players. His best position is sitting deep in midfield, but too often this season he has played in a team where someone else takes this position (Healy, Garvan, Colback). If he isn't in this position he can appear ineffective and I'd rather we utilise him from the bench. Unfortunately, players who break oposition play up and start the play for their own teams are sorely unappreciated by their own supporters, particularly those who can't or don't understand their role.

Overall, today's performance was much improved. We looked to move the ball about quickly, more in the manner of Ipswich of old. We still lacked service to the forwards, but at least we seem to have lost the fixation with getting the ball forward at the first opportunity.

To my mind the game was thrown away by three hurried and unnecessary substitutions. Why make three changes when your team hasn't had a chance to really wear down a ten man oposition? Martin looked lively and whilst Priskin wasn't necessarily at the races, he represents a goal threat. Pablo would have tired, but surely not for another ten minutes.

Great players don't make great managers and at this stage Keano reminds me of the likes of Terry Butcher, John Barnes and Bryan Robson - he certainly hasn't done anything to convince me he is any better than Magilton and seems to be making the same mistakes in terms of a failure to create a settled team prior to the start of the season and then a desire to change the formation/line-up for every game. He sounds very convincing in press conferences and I flit between admiration and annoyance. Ultimately I feel we would have been better to employ someone with genuine experience and pedigree.

One point that I feel should be made - Stead got a head injury soon after coming on and came across to the bench a number of times to sniff smelling salts. Yes he was poor, but with good reason! Had Keano not already made three changes he could have been replaced.

Finally, I am excited about the prospect of new signings, but they must be good quality - I am not interested in people who are all about grit and determination. Even if they get us promoted they won't keep us there. As well as grit, we need some talent and creativity to get us up and more importantly, to keep us entertained. I don't want Sunderland has beens, Man Utd never will be's or Irish never were's.

Portman Road used to be somewhere that excited me. Let's hope it does sometime soon once more.

Im with you there borge [great players & the prospective signings ] as for earlier post by brightblue ,negativity . It is the team that has created the negativity in the supporters , LET THEM GIVE US SOMETHING TO CHEER ABOUT, its hard to cheer on crap ,support comes through turnstyles at a price , .These are hard times, those who scape to afford to go along ,are the people paying the wages .

borge well done - a well balanced review. Good points well made. I wish there were more posts like yours.

Yes it was much better today but far from what we were anticipating maybe. The major thing lacking at the moment is confidence - a big thing for all players. If we could have got an early goal 2nd half then we would have really been off and running and probably would have won comfortably. As it was, a well organised gritty PNE team got the team behind the ball and crowded the area. I think we need an experienced playmaker in midfield.

Have patience and let's see who comes and goes by Monday night. We are only 5 games in so let's not get too carried away with the negativity. Yes it was frustrating again today but what help are all those boos at the end?

Agree in part with Borge, that the new signings need to add creativity, as that's what's lacking, that little bit of nous to look up and see a pass. Equally though, today we lacked width badly, Martin kept drifting inside, once he made a lovely pass to where he should have been... I agree with Smith too, did a decent job playing out of position to my mind, but I can't agree with Trotter, he was off the pace, too many passes went astray and he seemed slow.

Incidentally, to those who're busy denigrating Delaney as our worst full back ever, might I remind people of the diabolicle Graham Harbey.

Talk of promotion and play offs is a dream I afraid and we need to worry about relegation not promotion. I cannot name a side in the Championship that are in worse shape than us playing wise at the moment so if Keane does not get this right in next few days then it will be doom and gloom. I will not hold my breath with new signings as there have been so many false dawns. Plus points today we did not lose, Colback was impressive - negatives awful unbalanced defence, Trotter way off the pace in midfield - hard to judge strikers when they get no service at all. Priskin has received some harsh comments on here but how can he perform with no service at all and finally Maagers substitutions worse than Magiltons - heaven we must be in trouble.

From my own words..please don't get me to repeat as i'm sorry for what i'm going to say tonight...i have been an ipswich town fan for 23 long years and i mean long. I knew from day 1 when Roy Keane took over from Ipswich town it was going to take time for our squad to blend and be a contender for premiership football. But i cannot believe what i am seeing on every fixture which i pay hard earned money to watch to see ipswich town falling into a precipit of franchised football. I believe ipswich town under the DESTRUCTION of Roy Keane we will be a half squad of ''once could have been good footballers' and half of the potential of 'future of football' to a league 2 'once a premiership always a premiership'....Roy Keane will destroy us and will loose all our great earned history from Bobby Robson to George Burley...let this be a lesson to you all...

A disappointing day again today! Very frustrating! 4 new players of quality is the very least we need i hate to say! We played 4 centre halves today at the back, we miss'd any attacting threat from full back which was down to the team selection or lack of available players (wright/peters for me at full back) I do feel we still may need a mobile attacting full back, we also lack a real ball winner/organiser at centre half so a priority b4 tuesday u would hope! It seems Leadbitter will hopefully come in and replace Trotter who is im afraid to say is poor at the best, Edwards i feel could actually replace Walters on the right or he may even be used at full back?? The fourth signing should be another forward to replace the outing Stead but names in a hat for that one! Some1 more mobile than we already have is a must, priskin just needs time, Connor is going to be a gr8 player but is very young and should really be used as and when...
Special mention for young Jack colbeck who was our best player today.... He used the ball well and had some quality about him that out midfied lack today...

He's been saying we need four or so since he came in.
He's brought in 2-3 or so, delaney and healy at least. So for four more still...

Agree with borge completely. Good to see some people have sense and aren't bringing the ridiculous negativity we are seeing all too often. The negativity will be our downfall, if you start slating management/players after a few bad games then we'll turn into Norwich...

...and unless you're Agent Derek Davis, you probably don't want this

Partydaz who the hell are you to say who played well and did not, it was a better performance from us. if negetivitiy is all you bring then do us all a favour and dont bother. if we improve as much as we have been over the last 2-3 games we will be up there this year. walters, martin, pablo, colback and bruce all had good games. Luck was not on our side today another day whickham and quinn would have scored...just one of those days. we have a break now keane will bring in some new faces and all will come good.

I see us coming back refreshed from the international break and a lot of players more happy knowing their future till at least January is secure with the transfer window closed, we need to take it from there and get some real points on the board.

Onto the game, we were very bright in spells, and really looked like we wanted to get forward and test their defence at times, more in the second half noticeably, rather than passing around waiting for the openings to happen, we were making them ourselves, and Keano needs to drill this attacking mentality in there heads if we still want to think about promotion come May.

Bruce seems to be twice the captain McAuley ever was, anyone else notice he went straight to Pim after his early mistake that almost led to the first goal? Gave him a quiet word in his ear and a pat on the backside for encouragement. Good to see he's doing things like this, especially with someone as inexperienced as Pim.

Very much looking forward to seeing Carlos Edwards in the team, he'll set this league alight, and will be that spark in midfield we've been missing. Hopefully the signing of Leadbitter will give us a creative player as that's what we've clearly been lacking so far. Im hoping the other signing is a defender, and another striker to replace Stead.

And i'll sign off on the note that Roy Keane took over at Sunderland after the 5th game of the season with them lying 23rd, and they ended up getting promoted that year.

Keep the faith, up the town.

Not good enough. I understand it takes time to gel with new manager, players, backroom staff etc. but this does not appear to be the issue here. On paper the players we have should have dealt with an average 10 man Preston, and yet none seemed to play with their hearts on their sleeve. I trust in Roy and agree new blood is required. As someone rightly commented earlier, a CB in the mould of De Vos is essential as the pivotal force in the team. I like Pim a lot but he will never develop playing alongside McCauley.

Do your thing Keano. We trust!!

Keep the faith! We have played five league games and we are always slow starters. Loads of time to get it right. Yes it is painful to hand over our hard earned cash and not see the flowing stuff we have been accustomed to seeing in the past but it WILL happen soon!

On another day i would have said this was 2 points lost but considering our slow start to the season the results pretty much sums up what I was expecting the result to be especially going behind so early in the game again (all be it a tad luck as the ball could have just as easily been directed of the post out of goal!). Think we played fairly well with a reasonable amount of pressure all be it against 10 men it was good to see but any finish product in the final third just isn't there. Still I'm hopeful the team will turn it around especially with 3 or 4 new introductions into the team - watch out Middlesbrough! IBWT

The signs were there today in all too short periods of play ,with a bit of tinkering we wont be that far off the playoffs come may BUT if you think we are gonner get auto promotion this year dream on my friends.
If you look at the whole squad in general that keane inhereted from JM it was poor, bowditch clarke quinn haynes trotter stead richards macauley thatcher lisbie thats nearly a complete team and the ones that have left us look at where they are playing now!
the likes of balkenstein smith and wickham need time and should be squad players at the moment.
You cannot change a complete team and expect them to gel from the word go we are in for a bumpy ride till christmas and i for one will only judge then.
I can remember a certain alex ferguson being two games away from being sacked and the rest is history,i,m not suggesting keane is going to turn out like fergie but then again we aint manchester utd either. But here's to hoping eh!

If you think about it priskin stead and wickham are all similar player big strong and powerful , At this moment in time i think to much pressure is being put on wickham He will be a good player but we cant Rely and assume if he comes off the bench he will rescue us and grab a goal If i was keane i would buy a quik fox in the box type of striker who will bag us 15-25 goals a season , The defence is a complete shambles McAuley i dont rate at all pim i think had a poor game yesterday but is a good player bruce is good and certainly deserves the captaincy In my opinion I think we need a attacking rull back left or right who will link up with the wingers possible carlos edwards ? we need a creative midfielder who has expierince all theese additions will do us good and im not giving up on gio he hasnt gone any where yet has he i think we will get him :)

Yes we need new players but playing the right tactics against certain teams need to be looked at. Having a fall back plan is always good. I'm sure he can turn it round but lets so some signs of improvement
