This article is a bit misleading. Makes it sound like a new deal whereas actually the club has probably just taken the one-year option.

Expect he's had a pay rise off the back of his start to the season and clubs that were willing to pay him more being interested.

Unlikely they’d be taking up a one year option on a contract that still has 18+ months to run. Sounds more like a new contract to me. Whether it ties him to them for any longer than his previous contract is a different question.
