Exactly the type of player we'll be targeting going forward.

22yrs old, Prem experience but hasn't nailed down a place but can obviously play. It will def be a loan with a view to buy. Here's a player that has the 'potential' to turn a profit whist contributing within McKenna's system.

Could be another shrewd piece of business from Town here.

As an aside, he plays right back as well as left back. So gives us additional cover on both sides given Clarke's ongoing injury issue.

Not sure we can go overboard on shrewdness here. This is the type of player that pretty much every club outside the elite target.

The way the academy system has developed nationally, with big clubs hoarding young players, means that a huge percentage of footballers in the EFL are drop downs from the Premier League. It's pretty much the default recruiting pool for clubs in our division and below.

I'd say it would be shrewd if we do the deal ahead of all the other! ;)

Looks a good bit of business. His versatility also allows McKenna to pack the bench with more forward thinking options, which is his preference, given Williams can cover both full back positions. Can't say I've seen a lot of him and don't know if he might even be coming here with a view to start but in terms of upgrading the squad, Williams for Leigh is clearly that. Now to get a CB and another centre forward, ideally one who can play right up top and in behind.

Well, I suppose it depends on why others are/aren't interested really!

For me, "shrewd" would imply that we've spotted something other clubs haven't or made a wise decision that might pass others by. Not sure Williams' availability will have gone under anyone's radar.

McKenna will have worked with him at Man Utd presumably, so he knows what he's capable of. Could be an excellent acquisition.

£40K? £65K? Whichever way Brucie calls it that is a lot of K! Man Utd may want to offload him but they aren't known for donating players. Is this is player who has gone of the rails and needs offloading for a pittance? Last season certainly looks to have been a disaster for him. In the event he's held in any regard at all though, only the manager potentially will be costing us more in wages once this deal is ironed out.

We don't have the budget to deliberately spend £20K+ (has to be right?) on a majority substitute, even if he's the Swiss Army knife of substitutes. Williams must have enough about him to not want that role for himself either.

No, and I'm sure clubs with fewer pockets and better short term prospects would be interested. Credit to Ashton and McKenna if they can get the deal over the line.

Does it have to be £20k+?

Clubs that are actively looking to offload players who are surplus to requirements often end up covering a pretty substantial proportion of their over-weighty contracts.

I doubt, for instance, that we got more than 30% of Joe Pigott's contract covered.

It’s a great signing. Does anyone think that Clarke could play the Burns role sometimes allowing Williams on the right and Davis left?

Fantastic business for Town.

A player KM knows well and has coached from the Man Utd development squads to the first team and now to his own club.

Williams will be well versed with KM style of play and what will be required of him from the get go.

Brilliant.

£20K would amount to 30% of what Man Utd fans believe he is earning. Do you believe he is considered a dud then and only Williams' stance is preventing a permanent transfer this summer?

Yes I agree. Don't know if it's under the radar or not but if we get this done seems likely to be a good un . Good luck to Greg Leigh he moves on with our thanks he always gave his best when called on . This seems a significant upgrade . Think we are now looking at CB and Striker whe the right deals become possible . We'll done Town onwards and upwards .

Be surprised if we did get another CB now. Clarke and in a pinch Leif can play there and so can Janoi if needed (and if he stays). We have Fridge too.
Crooks and another good dedicated CF and that’s promotion.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

He's very much one that Man U are looking to offload, for sure. I'm sure they'd be happy enough to make it permanent now if we/Williams were amenable to them not paying Williams the rest of what he's due, but football doesn't work like that.

It'd be pretty mad to have a squad with just 3 specialist centre backs and 11 specialist forwards for 4 spots...

Plus Mr Baggott if he stays.

I would have thought if Baggott is off on loan we'll get a wizened old 34 year old or a young starlet from a PL club. No point not maxing out the squad spots.

Is this as good as done now? Not been following for the last couple of days, annoyingly life getting in the way of my ITFC cravings.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Just been on the phone to a client who's a season ticket holder at Norwich, he brought up Williams and said that in a pretty dire season in the Prem' he was the one shining light, really quick and stood out.

Surprised to seem potentially drop to Championship level given what he and a number of others saw. Would not want to seem him running at Norwich if we got him.

That's as much as I now know about the player. He's pretty pragmatic, so would assume the lad is half decent.

No doubt Leeds will now get him instead.

Let's remove the wages from discussion then - perhaps they are comfortable with us paying in the 10-20% region and he joins as an average earner. It would surprise me if the market regards him as 80-90% overpaid, which is what is essentially being suggested if United are prepared to deal on a wage split so low, but there we go.

Williams, with his early promise and PL experience, is surely not being tempted away to show the market he is of Championship substitute quality? He would be setting up an almighty drop in wages if that is his intention. I'm sure he's prepared for a substantial drop but there are levels. He'll need time to get up to speed, may flop in training, but I'll be gobsmacked if he isn't being brought in to improve our starting XI.

Curious. A serial failure coming to the end of his contract joins a bloated Championship squad as a benchwarmer? Other than the manager’s penchant for kicking Donacien in the teeth this looks like a straight swap of one unwanted signing with yet another.

Not much to get excited about here - but I guess he could try his luck at Oxford when his contract runs out.

Quite a spectacular stretch this one, even for you.

As an 18 year old he played half of Manchester United's games as they finished 3rd in the Premier League and then, as a 20 year old, played regularly in the Premier League for Norwich. Picked out as one of their players of the season in that Premier League campaign nonetheless (the first player mentioned after the obvious top scorer and captain nominations) - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/articles/cz73y0p2r8yo

At the age of just 22 he has decided to move on, his crime being he's spent a season not being good enough for one of the biggest clubs in the world, but he's now reduced to a benchwarmer in your eyes at a newly promoted Championship side - this very young player who has had two impressive Premier League seasons in the last few years, one for a team flying at the top and the other lauded for his commitment and ability in a team fighting relegation.

I assume his main crime is not being born locally in 1937, not playing inside right and not having a combover and being on sixpence a week.
