Welcome to NATO Finland 11:11 - Apr 4 with 1009 views | blueasfook | One in the face for Vlad who loved to complain about NATO expansion. Now, thanks to his invasion of Ukraine, he now shares double the length of his borders with NATO allies. What a strategist! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-65173043

Russia has been nibbling away at their territory for more than 100 years. It views it as part of their territory. They certainly do have effective, if small, armed forces. They’ll be a good addition to NATO. Uncle Vlad will not be a happy bunny. I think the Kremlin afternoon joke telling session might be cancelled today. The Finnish people are a resilient lot. The Winter War of 1940 is a classic of what they can do. Ok Russia steamrollered them in the end, but at huge cost. Not that Stalin cared about the casualties any more than Putin does now.

Finland was part of the Russian Empire from the early 18th century up to the Revoution. They broke free at that point, defeating the Reds in a savage civil war.

Indeed, which is why the little man, like Stalin before him wants it back. If you take Putin’s narrative, it’s Russia.

If Ukraine had shown no resistance I am sure it would be again now too. Or at least the war would be there instead of in Ukraine.

Think it more likely Putin would have gone south, into the Caucasus, or south-east into the "Stans" than Finland or the Baltics at this stage. Probably aiming to absorb them economically and diplomatically - as with Belarus - rather than through military takeover. It was the collapse of attempts to do that (Euromaidan leading to the downfall of Yanukovych) which led to the first invasion of 2014, then threats to the Donbas and Crimea (water supply) which partially sparked the second in 2022. Finland would have been a tough nut to crack, even before its NATO accession.

I think the attached matches his ambition. https://www.statista.com/chart/27605/map-of-russian-empire-and-russia-today/ This indicates how their boundaries have moved, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Territorial_evolution_of_Russia#/media/File:Territ All that thing’s utterances have indicated he wants as much of this as he can get so your menu order is I think about right.

It is the NCP (right wing but not quite so extreme) which is the largest party, so Orpo gets first dibs at forming a coalition - which reports suggest may actually include Marin's SDP. Involving the Finns Party (who came second, but not by much) could be tricky, given several others have refused to serve in government with them.
