Starc bowls Bairstow 11:50 - Sep 7 with 1357 viewsReuser_is_God

One of the most predictable dismissals of all time.

If Ed Smith at the ground today wearing his fcuking stupid glass & drinking champagne? He can shove it up his @rse, he’s selected this side that has lost a home Ashes series for the first time in 19 years.

Diabolical.

Controversial maybe, but I don't see an undroppable test player in Bairstow. Foakes looks better suited as a WK/Batsman and looked like he had the right temperament when given his chance.

Agree.

Barstow has always had hard hands, maybe too much for test cricket.
Foakes is cursed though.....he's from Essex.

The last two truly great glovemen have been from Essex (sorry Chris Reid) and neither have been given their deserved run in the test team.

Foakes in.....Roy out, Denly out.

Bairstow can bat below Buttler. No ideas yet about the other opener.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

We’ll win at the Oval for a drawn series.

Whilst I’d agree there’s people knocking at the door for a place in the team like Foakes, who did well in Sri Lanka, there’s a lot of chopping and changing and we need to settle on a team. Buttler needs to score well today otherwise I’d be tempted to drop him first.

We’ve got a team of ageing test players mixed with ODI players. Burns and Root are perhaps our only test specialists that aren’t retiring in the next few years. If we do lose this test then we can try something new for the last test I suppose - I’d look at bringing back Sam Curran and Foakes.

Just watching the ball that got Bairstow.

It's the stock ball from the left arm over bowler. John Lever built a great career doing it. I used to be able to do it.
Don't tell me that Bairstow and the England batting coaches have not worked on the ball coming 'back' to the batter.

Awful technique built in white ball cricket.
Front foot was in the wrong postcode.
Alistair Cook in a recent interview spoke of how countless hours working on his forward defence. That's the most important shot in test cricket.

This England team are based on white ball play and sadly not the pure game.

There are far too many white ball players who can nail a sexy attacking shot but can't do the basics over and over again.

I do agree that we may well need to start again from scratch, pick a fair few new players based more on application than anything, and give them a few years to settle. The current side's been cobbled together from what we thought were the best short term fixes at different points and now it's got no balance at all.

Stokes gone now.

Credit to the Australian bowlers in fairness but this England batting line up looks largely not up to it. A wicket always feels imminent.

Problem with Curran is that his bowling isn't fast enough.

His pace is down on what's required for test cricket.

The ball that got Stokes was a snorter.
I think Starc is a wonderful bowler. His action is smooth and when he get's it right I'd want to be at the other end.

I bowl left arm. No pace anymore, more gentle swing, but had to declare that bias!

Australia’s bowling attack is very high quality and they’ve exposed our batting relentlessly. They are a better team than us at this moment in time.

Foster was incredibly unlucky, had he broken through a few years earlier he would have been nailed on to win a shed load of Test caps, unfortunately for him Duncan Fletcher wanted a batsman who could put on a pair of wicket keeping gloves.
Foster was the best English glovesman of his generation and actually not a bad batsman either. He also had the sort of atttitude this current England team could benefit from.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

We pretty much abandoned test cricket for 4 years at the altar of the ODI. Bayliss and Smith delivered the brief of winning the World Cup.

I’d drop Root from being captain and give it to Butler or Stoakes and tell Root to get us the 150+ we need to win games. We need an opener and number 3 plus another genuine quick hopefully we can get Olly Stone fit again for tour of NZ.
