That's the thing isn't it.
The plane may well have sank pretty much immediately for there to be no sign.
I do appreciate that although there will have been still some distance to search, the area in which it was feasible for the plane to have come down must have been fairly contained in the scheme of things. It was possibly passed over several times by those looking for it.
