Is half-term different dates up there though? It's from the 20th here so you are outside that window thus it will be cheaper than our resident slave can get.

Yes. Always different holidays. Our kids broke up for summer around 20th June so we flew from Manchester and saved about £1500 on five flights we were quoted from Glasgow. | |

Flights to Rome for that week are already about 700 for 4 I believe with really bad times, any other week it's about 100.
You are of course correct in your recommendation, the Eternal City is a fabulous place to go and standing in the Pantheon one of the great experiences.
