WTAF is wrong with the Tories? #473626588 14:04 - Oct 21 with 1312 viewsHerbivore

What a bizarre and rather chilling use of publicly funded civil servants' time. The Tories bang on about freedom of speech, they are rushing through legislation to prevent universities from no platforming bigots, and yet here they are monitoring any perceived criticism and, in several cases, using that criticism as a reason to no platform renowned experts. Thin skinned sh!t weasels the lot of them.

Speaking of banning free speech, here's the health secretary trying to make life worse for the millions of people working in the NHS who aren't white, British-born, cis people under the notion that it'll 'save money' in an NHS where it's already mid-boggling difficult and harmful to anyone trying to raise concerns.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/health/steve-barclay-nhs-race-roles-b2433070.

Spoiler alert - it won't, because it'll open the service out to far more expensive dIscrimination claims, both on the patient and staffing side, not to mention that it's a drop in the ocean of NHS finances compared to say, the entire system of tendering services out. Or a decades worth of austerity policy which have exposed the most vulnerable in society to fewer and fewer protections to their health coupled to increased chances of them not being able to stay out of hospital one they finally get out.

That is deeply sinister. What other blacklists are being run?

This is further proof that a party which purports to support liberty and free speech is becoming increasingly authoritarian and illiberal.

This is certainly sinister and just the sort of behaviour that would rightly be condemned if it were happening in Russia or China.

Playing Devil's Advocate, and having only skim-read the article I can only see references to the Department of Education and nothing to indicate that this has been implemented by a Conservative Member of Parliament. It could just as likely have been put in place to protect civil servants at the head of the chain of command from unexpected media attack.

That being said, how the Conservatives respond to The Guardian article will say something about them.

You think it's likely that civil servants have, off their own back, decided to start monitoring the social media content of people working in education to see if they are critical of government policy or Ofsted? I can't see it myself, especially given the government's previous policy on only allowing speakers to address government departments following screening of their social media for similar critical content.

They don't actually want freedom of speech, if they did, there wouldn't have been the rhetoric around striking public sector workers, environmental protestors, people advocating for human rights or those suggesting the perhaps we shouldn't be supporting war crimes just because they happen to being committed by one of our allies, for example.

What they WANT is freedom from consequences when one of them decided to spout some bigotry in public.
Again.

Snooping on teachers and the like, and keeping files, would have to have been authorised by Ministers, as it clearly not something in a free country that would ever be regarded as proper for civil servants to do without authorisation.

Given how Keegan has treated union leaders behind closed doors, her scandalous video released yesterday as we go on half term should be a sacking offence.
