What was it like prior to that? Could you all wear purple if you wanted to?
Think there were laws in place preventing people from a lower class from wearing clothes that were considered to best suit upper classes. Guess it was a way of reminding people where they belonged.
I think the colour purple itself was very expensive to dye onto clothes. That’s why the English army wore red coats. Red, was the cheapest colour to dye.
I could be completely wrong.
Edit. Ipswich should change from blue shirts to purple.
