https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/jun/24/210418-tourists-charged-by-the-d

"One of England’s most popular tourist attractions has apologised after hundreds of visitors to Brighton Palace Pier were overcharged for fairground rides to the tune of thousands of pounds.

The pier — which is largely cashless — blamed the fiasco on the processing company Worldpay, which it said had used the date of the transaction instead of the actual amount in each case."

A cashless society will undoubtably happen at some point.

Of course it is a 100% control of the general public. A cashless society is the end of personal freedom.

What will happen is that people will find other things to barter with.

You can have this girl for an eight ball!

Surprises me that the some of the people who hate ID cards are in favour of a cashless society.

I currently live in a less affluent part of London, and the amount of cash machines that charge you to withdraw money around here is insane. It's robbery.

Cash machines charge the merchant money for using their service, and this price is naturally incorporated into costing/RRP. So if you aren't using cards, you are paying for a service you don't use.

Poorer people cannot get access to cards that offer deals like cashback on purchases, etc.

There are many ways in which poorer people get penalised by their payment method, cash or not.

To be quite honest I don't see the point of what you are saying - and I accept I might have got the wrong end - and or I am thick.

If they want cash there are scores of local tescos, sainsburys etc everywhere where if you can be bothered to walk a few hundred yards you are served with a no charge machine.

If they have a card why can't they pay with it without having to go to the cash machine?

Yes, I've noticed all the cashpoints round where I live now charge. I've pretty much given up on using cash, even to the extent of letting the local fish and chip shop charge me an extra 50p when I occasionally visit them to get me above the threshold for using a card.

I've also seen buskers on the tube are now taking card payments. They're slightly behind beggars in China (or at least Beijing), who were using QR codes for money transfers when I first went in 2015.

That is the point. Go to the sink estates around the edges of larger towns and cities and you will find that they are Big Four Supermarket-Free Zones.

They often just have a small Spar or similar, charging a lot more for the same or worse products. If people can't afford cars they often can't access the best value supermarket deals.

Spar type shops often have cashpoints which are not free to use.

How’s your bar going?

Before the pandemic a cashless business wasn’t a rarity but it was quite uncommon - but since last year, more and more seem to be going that way. My old driving instructor told me that he no longer accepts cash or cheques as he doesn’t want a lot of cash on him.

I do know someone who resents being ‘forced’ to use debit or came cut cards as he doesn’t want to be tracked - he’s not that interesting so I don’t know who would want to track him in the first place.

This will sound heartless but progress - or attempts to progress- shouldn’t be halted due to its elderly population.

Personally I don't use cash - hardly ever really, I prefer to use a card, but that's just my choice.

Hit and miss sometimes but on the whole way ahead of our wildest expectations. Sadly that doesn't mean big profits though because the extra staff for table service is a killer

How does still having X amount of cash in circulation hold up progress?

Not to mention that's a bit of a rotten thing to say really.
