I fancied us to win it with Butler cutting loose and getting 200 at a run a ball! Seriously, though, the Aussies are beginning to tire. We need to see off the second new ball but, if these two could do so, we have some chance of scraping a draw. How we can possibly beat them in the final test is a bigger problem.

That is part of the problem with the umpiring. Ask enough ridiculous decisions, eventually one or two will be given. Ask enough ridiculous decisions, some good calls will be seen to be among the ridiculous ones. Butler out means our hopes are down to wishing for a sudden downpour.

He should have been batting at 11, can play a few shots but that’s not what’s required at the moment

I thought he should have reviewed. Looked plumb but did turn a lot and we have 2 reviews left don't we so would only use one up.

It was but ball tracker had it as umpire's call on the impact. I thought it turned so much that it might have done too much but he was so far back in the crease it hadn't. My point was more that with 2 wickets left it is unlikely we would need to review both of them and so worth a try. I also thought we were 9 down so would have been only a need for 1 more! EDIT: As I said, it did look plumb but it would have been a review borne of desperation but that is where we are right now! [Post edited 8 Sep 2019 17:10]

Got to be Leach in next surely on 17:39 - Sep 8 with 1355 views | Guthrum | Given the way Overton and Leach are facing this new ball, I really do wonder if one of them ought to be partnering Burns (altho Denley's not done too badly in the 2nd innings).

Labauschagne looked more threatening in that over even before the wicket. A bit too much still to do but this one was lost on Day 1. Nice to be competitive today though, be nice to still draw the series.

Overton LBW. Gone. Valiant resistance, but too steep a hill to climb in the end.

I can't help feeling the series was lost when Jason Roy was selected as an opener and retained in the team. The playing and loss of Anderson in the first Test was almost as decisive.

Got to be Leach in next surely on 18:22 - Sep 8 with 1272 views | The_Romford_Blue | At the end of the day, Australia have deserved to win this match. They’ve deserved to win the series tbh and I expect them to beat us in the last test. We have no way of getting Smith out. And Anderson being injured is a big loss. Root hasn’t looked the same player since being given the captaincy and we still look fragile early when a couple of wickets fall.

As people have been saying none of the problems that were there beforehand, particularly with the batting, have been addressed at all. Notable also that most of the better performers so far, Burns, Broad - didn’t play in the World Cup. Even Jofra missed the first test and therefore had a bit of respite. I discount Stokes because he’s superhuman anyway, although even with him it’s been restricted to that one great innings, bowled well at times as well tbf

As a friend of mine put it last night, Smith is better than England, who are better than Australia.

True, and it's been seven years trying to replace Strauss as an opener. I think your second point goes for much of the Australian team as well, Smith another obvious exception. It's been a competitive series bit far from a classic, too few players can bat properly for that.

The Aussie attack is more experienced than ours and has been together longer. They have a better bowling attack than us, along with Smith being a massive difference with the batting It's easy to forget Leach and Archer are new to test Cricket. Why we brought Overton into this test is another puzzler you have to say. Fundamentally, we can't bat and that is a real problem. It has been an issue for a while too. Are there any decent players coming through, I know he's not necessarily being talked about in the red ball game but Banton at Somerset looks like a prospect.

Probably the difference being that Australia have rotated their quicks very well. Cummins is the only one to have played both World Cup and all ashes tests. But they also rotated them within the game today very well and as I mentioned before Lyon might not be bowling that well, but he can always hold an end.
