Great to see Brian Moore again. Doubt it its European Cup only. Still sticks in the throat to think we lost the title to Villa despite beating them three times that season. UEFA Cup will never have the same prestige either which is a shame because the 81 team was better than that Villa team but the record books will show they were champs and went on to win the EC. F@cking Bosco Jankovic!

We were absolutely awesome, and I was always confident of 3 points every home game. We were the better side, but fair play the Villa were a good side. Gary Shaw was a fantastic player and peter wither as hard as nails.

We ran out of steam because we were in all competitions till the end ...66 games played to Villas 43 .....enough said .

UEFA won’t have the same prestige but there was very little to choose between that and the european cup in those days in terms of quality. The cwc was a distant third.

It was the equal of today’s champions league as it held the same top 3/4 runners up on the respective leagues , far tougher to wi in some respects !

Am I right in thinking it was only the winners of each league who qualified? If so it's the equivalent of us winning a competition with Barcelona, Man City, PSG, Dortmund, Napoli etc this season

Correct. Talent was more equitably spread across the continent in those days though, so there wasn’t this great disparity between a few and the rest. The tournaments were just knock out all the way through as well which gave smaller clubs a better chance to progress to latter stages. Today’s tournaments are much poorer.

Yes the European cup did have the winners , but like today’s champions league the uefa cup had the leagues top 4 runners up ...making it almost the equal in terms of hardness to win ...if that makes sense .
