Strange to think 11:43 - May 5 with 1733 viewstextbackup

That next season our aim is to stay up/finish 17th.. when we’ve spent the last 23 years aiming to go up!

Great thing is, you know our owners won’t just buy any old player, cash cows, they’ll all have to be a certain type. Might not see us stay up, but you’d think we’ll give it a bloody good go, and do it our way.

I’m expecting us to sign Haaland , de bruyne and Saka in the next 2 months.

Joking aside our 4.3m record signing of Sereni might well go shortly . How

Yeah, I have that problem with time too. Bloody thing keeps speeding up the older I get. I’m sure 2000 was only 10 years ago at most.

I bet survival won’t be our aim. We’ll probably not have a target and do what we did this year - aim to play our way and stick to our principles and see where it takes us. Survival is bound to be a milestone, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we cause a few upsets.

There'd be a nice symmetry to that fixture, seeing as it was our first in 2000/01. And we did ok back then, didn't we? I think we only added Hermann to the starting line up. And that's what gives me a bit of hope for next season. If we get the right players in there's no reason why they can't buy in to KM's philosophy and add to the character of the group. I worry about our defence, but I'm sure that will be addressed.

I'm not too fussed about staying up or not, although it would feel like a promotion. I just want us to buy players for the future and stay within our means and build the club for sustained success.

I think parachute payments are a chunk less if we only manage a single season in the Prem, so there’s that. But I do get what you mean.

We have not spent most of the last 23 years aiming to go up. Under Magilton, we had a low budget until Evans appeared & mid table was a fair result.
While Keane thought promotion wouldn't be hard, we spent his terms fighting relegation. Jewell saved us once & then we descended back into the slough of despond & another relegation battle.
Mick saved us this time & within a couple of years we were vying for promotion, but then Evans's outlay was swamped by others so another dour relegation battle endured.
The disastrous Hurst was greeted with optimism & we all looked forward to his vaunted "high press" (well used by McKenna) but it never appeared.
We then spent 4 years struggling to get out of the awful League One, seeing off Lambert & Cook in the process.

Ok, so to start each season you have that ‘we want to go up’ thought, every fan does surely, even if not realistic.

Yes, lots of fans are unrealistic (you wouldn't be a football fan if you weren't some kind of an optimist) & when things don't go well, they blame the manager and/or the owner.
Normally, wage bill determines roughly where a team finished in a league & that makes McKenna's achievement far more remarkable as I think Town have around the 16th highest wage bill in the Championship this season. Funnily enough, the top 5 are Leicester, Southampton, Leeds, Norwich & WBA.

That first twenty minutes against Sunderland was like men against boys. We couldn't get or keep the ball and it was a real welcome to the Championship. Then we get two great goals, Vas makes two game winning saves and we never looked back all season.

We need similar for the first Prem game.

Yes, the players will start off feeling confident & I'm sure McKenna won't set us up to sit back & defend. With the right signings, I think we could surprise a few people early on & get some points on the board against the middling teams.

there were plenty in those years who wanted to go down to break the monotony of however many years we had in the championship, especially when we werent even challenging for the playoffs.
