There have been a number of conservation schemes (one with goats in the Karakoram springs to mind) where, rather than culling excess numbers themselves, they permit hunters to come and do it under supervision. Charging them for the privilege, which brings much needed funds into the coffers. Win - win. Would it be any better to allow game preserves to become overcrowded, leading to overgrazing, starvation and disease? These are artificial environments which need managing for sustainability. It's more an issue of well-meaning, but poorly drafted legislation aimed at deterring poachers, but catching others as well. | |
