Chesterfield 19:59 - Feb 5 with 3702 viewsibbleobble

If my math is correct, it’s conceivable that Chesterfield could be promoted by the end of February. Is that the quickest a side has ever been promoted in English football? Can find some references to mid-march but not Feb.

Yet Cook rested their entire squad for the FA Trophy a couple of weeks ago, and got knocked out. I wonder how far ahead a club has to be these days to risk trying to get to Wembley. A Macclesfield - Chesterfield final would have been fun.

Chesterfield are 19pts clear at the top, but as I'm sure the owners are more interested in the club regaining its league status than having a run in the FA Trophy, hence Cook decided to throw the game.

It would take quite a sequence of results for that to happen. They'd have to win every game in Feb and the chasing two would have to lose all or most of their games.

They need to win 8 out of the last 16.

Only 1 team goes up automatically. Barnet can get to 101 points by winning the rest of their matches. Therefore, to guarantee top, Chesterfield would currently need a draw in addition to those 8 wins. If Barnet and Bromley suddenly lost all their games then it is conceivable mathematically that Chesterfield could be promoted on 27 Feb by beating them.

The earliest I remember was Notts County in 1998 in what is now League Two. They were promoted in early March.

Superficial sincerity like being overly cynical by the mistaken use of a collective noun you mean?

I have it that Chesterfield just need a 100% record in Feb to achieve that irrespective of other results.

They have 4 games in Feb which could take them up to 99 points

Bromley wouldn't be able to catch them as they are one of those games.

Barnet are on 56 points with 45 to play for so could still catch them.

If Chesterfield did win all four games, then it would only take take Barnet to lose 1 for it to be guaranteed.

Edit:Altrincham could still catch them as they have 51 points to play for.

Obviously, I get that. But sending the youth team when you have a large squad of professionals (which Chesterfield do) is a whole new level of 'not taking the cup seriously', and seemed over-cautious given their lead at the top. (If I were a Leicester fan, I'd be wanting to 'go strong' at Bournemouth in the next round of the FA cup.)

I guess we may see this more and more. Maybe people already think that Town would have been smart to put out the U21s for the Maidstone game, with John McGreal in charge and the entire first-team squad all jetting off again. I can see it happening within a year or two, and the only clubs playing their proper pro's being the clubs with zero chance of going up or down.

Fair play to Cookie, he's found his level.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

One win, two draws and two defeats in their last five means it's dragging on a bit. Spanked by Dorking today.
