Not sure if anyone has pointed this out, but in 1961 we lost 7-1 in the Cup at Southampton (both teams then Div 2 i.e. Championship). But only one of those teams went on to be champions that very same season, and to win the top tier the following year.

Shock or fluke results happen in football. That's a huge part of the appeal of the game, whereas in territorial games such as rugby, the superior team will inevitably convert enough penalty kicks to win. This also explains why a goal is such a valuable currency in football, with games often being drawn or decided by a single goal. The downside is the huge disputes & VAR involvement whenever a goal is scored, or a penalty kick awarded.
As far as penalties are concerned, there is inevitably a huge delay before one is taken, even without VAR.
