Not sure if anyone has pointed this out, but in 1961 we lost 7-1 in the Cup at Southampton (both teams then Div 2 i.e. Championship). But only one of those teams went on to be champions that very same season, and to win the top tier the following year. [Post edited 30 Jan 11:04]

Shock or fluke results happen in football. That's a huge part of the appeal of the game, whereas in territorial games such as rugby, the superior team will inevitably convert enough penalty kicks to win. This also explains why a goal is such a valuable currency in football, with games often being drawn or decided by a single goal. The downside is the huge disputes & VAR involvement whenever a goal is scored, or a penalty kick awarded.
As far as penalties are concerned, there is inevitably a huge delay before one is taken, even without VAR.
