Anyone with any knowledge really, I have mark 1 cooper s, had it 5 years and she's in good nick apart from the fact that i think one of the seals has gone. I'm getting substantial water in the passenger side footwell.

Have rang several garages and only 2 fancy their chances of fixing it. Local independent want £108 quid to try and find the leak.

Spoke to BMW who want £126 per hr and want the car for 3 days (won't be 3 days of solid looking) and then spoke to their parts department who said that the relevant part, depending on the leak could cost anywhere from about £150 quid to over a grand!

Anybody familiar with the issue and have an idea of liley cause?

Worst case BMW could take however many hrs to tell me I have to spend £1k plus labour at getting it sorted.

Otherwise it's a lovely car that I'd hope would be really desirable in another 5 to 10 years and it would be a shame to see her go ad it's the most fun car I've ever driven. None the less I'm inclined to make a change as feels like it could turn into a wild goose chase to ID the leak based on the mini forums I've looked at.

Brings me to point 2. I'm considering a 1 series convertable and whilst this may indeed make me look like a hairdresser I dont care however I'm interested to know what the chances are of encountering a similar issue on that down the line. Appreciate its always a risk with a rag top but from the research it seems a common ish fault with older minis but there is little on the beamer (other than early models where a pillar potentially seems to rub the material but I'd be looking towards something a bit later where that issue was resolved)

Any prior owners of either have any insight on either?

Thanks In advance TWTD hive mind

Whichever model you choose, the indicator lights won't work.

It amazes me how a dealership, especially when presented with a known fault, can charge to fault find that fault. Your vehicle is at least 15 years old. They have been presented with this fault hundreds if not thousands of times since 2001 when the mark 1 was introduced.
The mark 1 Cooper S has many design faults. The mark 2 Cooper S 2007/10 had twice as many design faults.
Both Models rushed from design to showrooms.
Both models spent most of their lives back at the dealership having recall work done in the USA.
Unfortunately Mini UK couldn’t see any problems.

I appreciate it’s a different car but I had a similar issue with a C Class Merc.

A few people tried to find issue and couldn’t but in the end I googled it and it turned out that I had a build up of leaves and debris that had got stuck inside the body under the wheel arch. The water was getting in from the seal at the bottom of the windscreen (outside where the wind screen wipers are attached at the base) and had nowhere to go as it was all bunged up and was then coming in under the passenger footwell. There was a rubber bung under the arch which I removed, fished out the debtor, did the on the bonnet and didn’t have the issue again.

Might be worth a look?

Well, in the nicest possible way it’s impossible to price anything that’s not defined, so nobody can give you a price until the cause of the ingress has been accurately traced & here lies the problem of how much to find it? Any idjut can price you a set of pads etc.
45 yrs of the motor trade some spent trying to find exactly what your experiencing taught me one thing, anything is possible!
So if you are in Ipswich look up Car Glass & Trim used to be on the old Cattermoles site West End Rd (May have moved) speak to Kevin or Simon the owners, if not look em up anyway they are excellent in find water ingress issues, tell em Marcus Astons referred you, best of luck.

Does it have a plenum chamber like the mg zt (BMW engine)? This can get clogged up with leaves and leak etc and is an easy fix, google for more info

I don't think so, I'm not much of a mechanic but mine had a super charger rather than a Turbo charger and I think (though could be well wrong) plenum Chambers are for Turbos?

I had something similar once and spent days tearing out all the carpets etc. noticed water trickling deep inside the glove box and the problem was a perished seal on the top left side of tue windscreen. Got it re-sealed and Bob's yer uncle.

Probably not your problem but worth a check.

Edit - just spotted Decage had the similar thing.
