What's wrong with this penalty? 17:18 - Dec 21 with 1590 viewsThe_Flashing_Smile

At 6:05... a different player to the one who put the ball on the spot takes and scores the penalty. The ref books the original 'taker' and orders a retake. Not sure why though, is there anything wrong with that? I wasn't aware you had to nominate a taker and then stick to it.

I’d say it would be for unsportsmanlike behaviour.

I might be wrong, I'm sure there will be refs on here able to clarify, but I think you can do that now but didn't used to be permitted to at one time.

Under the rules the person that places the ball 'has' to take the pen.

Under FA rules the kicker must be identified to the keeper.

For law 14, the relevant parts are:

The player taking the penalty kick must be clearly identified.

a team-mate of the identified kicker takes the kick; the referee cautions the player who took the kick

The laws may well have been changed since that clip.

I stand corrected. I thought I was reading somewhere recently about a player other than the one the keeper was expecting taking a kick and scoring.

Indeed. Law 14 still states “The player taking the penalty kick must be clearly identified.”

As others have said, the player taking the kick must be the one who places the ball on the spot.

Yep happened to me once when I was a keeper. Player placed the ball and walked back to the 18 yard line. I was totally focused on him, next I knew the ball was past me and into the net.

Player who took the kick was booked, ref ordered a retake.

Player ran up, sent it over the crossbar.

I always confirm the pen taker and point him/her out to the keeper.

This makes sense now I think about it. Never heard of it before (but then never saw anyone do it!)
