That Van Basten goal 11:12 - Jun 25 with 1183 viewsRomeo4

34 years ago today(!) MVB scored that supreme volley versus USSR. Not sure any other non-ITFC /England has had such an impact on me since.

Ably assisted by Sir Arnold Muhren of course (although in truth it was a pretty poor cross!)

Glad someone else thinks the cross was a bit ropey. The greatness of van Basten's goal was a consequence of the cross being overhit and possibly even a bit wayward too. And MVB would probably never have swung his boot at a better, more conventional opening.

Of course, always good to get a glimpse of Arnold.

By the way, think it was largely overlooked at the time, but this is a really great video with Arnold reminiscing about ITFC, football and sharing his insights into our greatest ever team:

Thought I might be accused of blasphemy here!

Ok, he spotted MVB peeling off (way) beyond the far post and, as they’d practiced in training, he delivered a precise looping just to the optimum place where Van Basten just couldn’t miss. It was all credit to Arnold.

David Winner's great book on Dutch football Brilliant Orange discusses that goal. Arnie said he didn't have to look up as he knew exactly where Van Basten would be.

It was a bit too deep, but otherwise almost a carbon copy of his one in St Etienne that Mariner got on the end of!

Mick provided a good one in the same competition.

If this had gone in they wouldn't have got to the final
