It's essentially passive aggressive, nobody says "I'm in the whatever brigade, it's used to pour scorn on anyone who has a different opinion from the speaker or writer. It also suggests a lack of understanding and nuance. Everything has to be black or white for these people.

Commonly used by dimwits, lacking a solid argument of their own as they clearly have scant knowledge of the topic they are spouting off about.
