tv programmes being pulled on 15:52 - Jun 12 by lowhouseblue | excellent you've found your level of debate at last. |
Oh, that's weird. Because I thought 'get over it' was your original contribution to this debate. So whose level am I arguing at? Don't worry, lowhouse, change is happening and the modern world is scary. But approaching things as an either/or isn't helpful. You can remove racist content at the same time as pushing for wider social change too.

john cleese: "One of the things I've learned in the last 180 years is that people have very different senses of humour," he said. "Some of them understand that if you put nonsense words into the mouth of someone you want to make fun of, you're not broadcasting their views, you're making fun of them."

You are doing both, which is something you and Cleese both fail to grasp. I also understand that Mr Cleese isn't exactly your go-to expert on race relations. But don't worry, the Minstrels will still be being shown at the Con Club as per.

You must really find the use of blackface and the word n*gger hilarious to go to these lengths to defend it. The vast majority of comedy and other media won't need to be touched at all. That's because they don't contain racially insensitive content. It's quite easy to do. But of course you have to cater for people who giggle at the word n*gger, I suppose. Anyway, must go again, my chin*y's nearly here.

Would you ban films too, where a character is portrayed as one that uses racist language, and that word in particular, for example Pulp Fiction? [Post edited 12 Jun 2020 19:12]

No. The responsible use of irresponsible language should be actively encouraged. The examples we're talking about, however, are not responsible uses of irresponsible language. Context is always important and essential to artistic integrity. The Black and White Minstrel Show is quite a long way away from Pulp Fiction. lowhouse cites freedom of expression, but then goes on to say Love Thy Neighbour is beyond the pale. Why? There's a level of expression we as a society we can and should tolerate; where it offends a specific group, we shouldn't tolerate it. No one should find humour these days in pretty blatant, and most importantly unfunny, racism. The dial is just moving again, don't be against it. The longer we accept racist tropes as a part of everyday mass entertainment, the longer we perpetuate the issue. There will always be racist material available for those of you who wish to read it, but we can reject it generally as a society :) [Post edited 12 Jun 2020 19:31]

Perhaps ironic for the Jewish side of his background, although there were plenty of members of the Nazi Party who had a hint of a Semetic racial background. Rather like the segregation laws in South Africa during apartheid, or in the Deep South of the United States when the Jim Crow laws were enforced, the detailed records kept by the state could allow a couple or their offspring equal status or could demean one partner and the children. Trevor Noah has some revealing comic sketches on what that meant for him. The Catholic side I do not find ironic at all given the rise to power of the National Socialists was rooted in the Catholic south of Germany but the development of the relationship between the Nazis and the Catholic Church took many twists and turns: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_Church_and_Nazi_Germany

*Fawlty Fine, keep that one; it clearly is in context. Is that what you were so het about all this time? Bless. It wasn't funny in the first place, but you keep your Fawlty Towers. No one will remember it in 20 years anyway.

tv programmes being pulled on 12:49 - Jun 12 by Libero | That was a laughably bad example from Ely which only served to highlight his own ignorance, but do you really think that all pieces of cinematic and televisual history depicting offensive racial stereotypes should be removed from public gaze? Isn't there an argument that in order to know ourselves truly we must know our history? Someone else mentioned context earlier in the thread, if these pieces of art were displayed under the context that the representations within them are of it's time and that they are no longer considered acceptable then what is the issue? |
It was the first example that came to mind, no I’m not ignorant to the issue, if you see my reply to Dan a little further down you will see some more but thanks for making presumptions rather than engaging in conversation as I said in my reply to him, I see you never replied to that post because it doesn’t suit your narrative [Post edited 12 Jun 2020 19:49]

Not at all. On a personal philosophy tip, I'd try to expose as many as young people as possible to the most graphic and extreme content possible. A deeper understanding of the abject helps us reconcile the difference between the Self and the Other and move towards some sense of self-actualisation. But I recognise that my personal feelings and philosophy don't overshadow a greater societal need for responsibility in the materials we push in mainstream media.
