4 Million children living in poverty in the UK!!! on 12:02 - Dec 10 by Clapham_Junction | A relative of mine is a primary school teacher in Bury St Edmunds, hardly the most deprived part of the world. There are kids in their class that come in hungry and in unwashed clothes. |
Sh1t parenting is not poverty.

No, we look after the needy.

Clearly not given the four million kids living in relative poverty and hundreds of thousands of elderly people who've died thanks to a lack of social care provision. The amount of people on here who seem to think there's such a thing as the deserving poor is quite shocking.

It's when you've swallowed the lie of opportunity being the great leveller in society (yes, a neoliberal society) that you think there is a deserving poor. It's opportunity AND equality that matter. There is no such thing as "equality of opportunity" as opportunities get hoovered upwards by those already in a far better position to take advantage of them. It's only when people recognise that reality, that they recognise the need to help those at the bottom and give them a proper leg up. Not least kids who have no way of exploiting opportunities anyway.

Yes, my whole profession was founded on the need to move away from 'deserving poor' This is about child poverty 'Sh1t Parenting' might be another issue but maybe the clothes were unwashed because they have no means of washing or drying them, maybe they were hungry becasue the food money was spent by the abusive partner on drugs, maybe the mother is, after years of being told she was 'sh1t' suffering from MH issues, maybe, maybe, maybe.. but, the child has no choices in this. This is what it is all about - children who have no choices on the circumstances they were born into only the opportunities to create something. The state should provide those opportunities, intervene where the parents need support and take action where the situation is extreme. Last word from me: We run a breakfast club in Limerick which means everyone is fed before school in a catchment for Moyross. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moyross Class disruption has reduced significantly, allowing those that want to study to get on with it, teachers report more engaged students, exam results are better (very low base level) and other improvements cost - about 20K a year with volunteers cost of 1 year detention in Limerick prison 270K per year + cost to victim, cost to insurance company, cost of judicial process, cost of police investigation, post detention interventions, cost to partner and family, and probable exclusion from the workforce so a lifetime of benefits and support Numerous examples or early intervention being cost effective in hard cash and in societal benefit. so whatever your perspective - it saves in the long run to intervene

4 Million children living in poverty in the UK!!! on 10:03 - Dec 10 by usm | How many children are there living in the UK? 20 Million? Which means 1 in 5 lives in poverty. Shocking stat, but again where are they? My daughter works in a primary school in Wandsworth, in a fairly deprived area. Sure there are kids who come from families that struggle financially, but hardly any - if any at all - that could be described as living in poverty. I just dont know where these figures come from. |
The charities will tell you how these things are measured nearly 40 milion living in a state where they cannot pay all day to day costs suggest this not wrong. The UN have agreed, on the evidence they asked for and made the point it is down to political choices. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Wandsworth is deprived?! Lol. More likely to have avocado shortages than child poverty.

It's all relative. We're down to our last 20,000 gallons of almond milk! 'What will we do, will no one think of the children?' It's not the same thing is it.
