TWTD Questionnaire 2020/21

Q6 Player of the 2020/21 season?

A resounding victory for 'none of the above' which was included in the survey for the first and hopefully the only time. In a campaign only memorable for the wrong reasons (on the field anyway, off it the very memorable developments appear set to change the club for the positive, of course), no one really stood out enough to warrant carrying off a gong.

James Wilson claimed the Supporters Club award and is again the top-ranking player here. The Welsh centre-half was solid and professional, forming a decent partnership with Toto Nsiala in the early part of the season, and so if anyone deserved to take plaudits from the season he did.

Subsequently, Wilson was released, not down to his performances when he was in the side but as the Blues simply look at assembling a squad of better players going forward.

Skipper Luke Chambers ended his nine-year association with the club in May having been a true Town captain. When I was growing up I couldn't imagine anyone other than Mick Mills as skipper, those becoming fans in the late 1990s and early 2000s probably felt the same about Matt Holland and youngsters during the last few years I'm sure felt the same about Chambo.

I'm sure it will remain a huge disappointment and frustration for him that he wasn't able to lead the Blues into the Premier League in his early days - that play-off season will remain very fondly remembered - and that in his last two years Town were toiling in League One and he was unable to captain them to promotion back to the Championship.

The vast majority of fans will wish him well for the remaining years of his career and he's definitely someone to mark down as a potential Blues manager of the future, presumably with Cole Skuse, who similarly played a big role at the club during his eight years, as his assistant.

James Norwood had another injury-hit season but when he was on the field found the target regularly. If he's able to stay fit (and is still here, which is by no means a certainty regarding anyone in the squad) then 2021/22 could be his year.

Last season's Player of the Year was Flynn Downes with Luke Woolfenden second. Neither had the best of 2020/21 campaigns with Downes hit by head-turning transfer speculation and regular injuries.

Both may well be on their way out of the club during the summer in Paul Cook's summer revolution. If they do it'll be interesting to see where and for what fees after their 2020/21 seasons.

"Solid and professional" in 18 matches is enough to win Player of the Season. Says it all really.

It does when most of them were flaccid and amateurish.
