ElephantintheRoom, an interesting reply to the above article, which, while I don't agree with it, is well made and I respect it, we all have our opinions, no rights or wrongs in this matter I'm 68, I saw my first match the season after we won the First Division Championship. My late Uncle was quite heavily involved with the club at that time. Some of the players of the era quite often used his home as a "bolt hole" to get away from it all, a few miles outside Ipswich in a villiage. I used to see them there when I visited with my parents at the time. I don't think anyone who was around at the time will forget what the Cobbolds did for the club, they are an idelible part of our history, and of course, some of the stories are "legendary" ! It all finally came to end with the resignation of Patrick Cobbold as Chairman in April 1991. 32 years later the world has changed and football with it, whether we like it or not. Very few successful clubs are run by families, let alone local ones. It's the way of the world. In my view we are very lucky to have our present owners, who have been very open about how the club is financed and some of the interviews given by Mark Ashton have been amazingly informative, something you just never would have seen in the past. One day, another era will dawn, that's for sure. Non of us know who or when that will be, but the current owners have made it clear, they're here long term. I have a mantra, " remember and respect the past, live for today and plan for the future" I apply that to football as well as life in general. Apologies for the length, just hope it stimulates a bit of (friendly) debate! |
| News Comment | Ferguson: Nowhere Near Good Enough at 02:01:56
Just saw this post on twitter by a Peterborough supporter. The manager might be a bit deluded, but this person clearly isn't. " Ipswich Town, probably the best team league one has ever seen. If we had taken some of our chances, you never know, but credit to them, what a side, they play some lovely stuff " |
| News Comment | Woolfenden: We're Comfortable Playing Out From the Back at 17:59:22
ArnieM, I'm not directly comparing us to Manchester City. I said the playing style is similar, and yes, there is a gulf in class. However they are utilising that way of playing against many inferior teams. We are doing very similar. |
| News Comment | Coleman: It's a Circus at 17:54:58
Shame about the rant, I've always had time for Coleman, he's done a minor miracle at A.S. Sour grapes turning into whine. |
| News Comment | Millwall 1-1 Ipswich Town - Match Report at 18:10:24
Probably never wise to draw concrete conclusions from pre season friendlies. However, an away draw, when lagely dominant, against the team who after Fulham and Bournemouth in the Championship, with the best home record last season, is at least encouraging! |
| Blog Comment | Lessons to Be Learned From Last Season at 01:38:25
Very interesting read, some points well made. What never seems to be mentioned is that KM is still learning his trade, he is still something of a rookie manager. By that reason and in my book, he's made a pretty impressive start! |
| News Comment | Portman Road to Go Cashless at 21:41:16
I'm 67 and I have to say I think the "cashless society" is one of the best things to have happened in my lifetime, and a few things have! Filthy germ ridden cash, good riddance. I appreciate not all will agree with those sentiments but time moves on, even for fossils like me! |
| News Comment | U18s Manager Atay Resigns at 18:01:39
It's great that a clubs youth teams have trophy success, but in my opinion, the true mark of a successful academy is how many of the youngsters come through to play regular first team football, at least at the level that the first team is currently playing in. |
| News Comment | Town Sign Brentford Full-Back Thompson On Loan at 00:12:17
Saw this lad play for Brentford against Man City online. Got the man of the match award from the TV Pundit and I certainly agreed. On the night, looked a class or two above League one. |
| News Comment | Former Canaries Boss Linked With Town at 01:01:34
Would far(ke) rather have a rather more recent Norwich boss. I simply don't care about any connections to them or anyone else, just want the right person for the job, finally, whoever that may be, as long as it's not one of the usual, been there, done that, about 20 years ago brigade. Younger blood and long term strategy in place, please! |
| News Comment | U23s Coach Dyer in Hospital For Tests at 20:03:25
Saw Kieron doing some of the punditry on the Newcastle/Tottenham game a couple of weeks ago. Didn't look well to me then, yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes to some degree. Something i've been familiar with. All the best Kieron and get well soon. |
| News Comment | Ashton: Priority is to Get Some Players In at 01:49:45
I'm certainly hoping that recruitment is now much more data led. The days of scouts trawling all over the country (except looking at more grass route levels) are much reduced. Look at the Brentford model ,a programme which identifies over performing teams in their respective leagues, and within those teams, over performing players, according to their data model. Of course you need to do a check to see they have the sort of temprement etc to go with it, but it has to be the way forward, still real bargains to be had, in particular abroad, though of course, what with covid/brexit etc, things might be a bit trickier than usual. Looking forward to the next few weeks. |
| News Comment | UEFA Cup 40th Anniversary - Wark: We Didn't Have a Weakness, We Were Strong in Every Department at 01:31:15
Never to be forgotten, was there in Amsterdam and in Cologne. Definitely got a bit squeaky bum time in the former. They bought on this Austrian guy, Hans Krankl, who proceeded to run rings round a side as Warky said, was running on empty, but it all worked out in the end! Would have had a hat-trick of trophies that season, but for a lack of strength in depth and a ridiculous fixture list! Hope you younger generation of supporters get to taste at least some of that kind of glory. I think we may have the right people in place now, but you might have to be patient. On a final note, i think it would be great if the new owners could find roles for our club legends at Portman Road, should they want them of course. After all, they are a major reason why Gamechanger were attracted to the club in the first place! |
