To quote Blue Wilson, "wow!"

Clarke and Broadhead pure class–the only trouble is they risk making a few of our regulars look like donkeys! Fabulous stuff. Keep it going!

Worst I have ever seen us play
at 20:35 15 Dec 2021

Our first touch in the opposition box was in first half injury time–if that Burgess flick counts as a shot, that was our first shot–forget a shot on target.

Pathetic, incoherent, embarrassing. Completely outplayed.

Great performance
at 20:03 12 May 2021

Great performance. Unlucky to lose. (And only losing to a substitute who Liverpool poached from Hoffenheim last year–no level playing field in youth football either!).

And that, for any youngsters reading, is what supporting Ipswich was like in the 1970s–our little club going toe-to-toe with the big Boys and holding our own (and eventually having our dreams crushed by Liverpool...) :-)

This is the most I've enjoyed football in years. The lads are playing great. I feel proud to be an Ipswich fan!–such an unusual sensation! :-)

Probably a silly question
at 03:20 20 Feb 2021

Does anyone know anything about Lambert's personal life? Does he have a wife, kids, whatever? Don't worry, I am not some weirdo stalker–I was just thinking that I know nothing about him as a human being. Maybe it was the stories about Klopp that got this line of thought going, I don't know. Anyway, who should I be worrying about in the fallout of this s$%tshow?

Maybe that's why he's dropping hints about unspoken things that may change...

Farewell to McGoldrick
at 16:16 25 Jun 2018

I'm surprised at the very low-key way in which David McGoldrick's departure was announced. Certainly in keeping with Hurst's approach, and it's not his issue because McG was never his player, but I think McG deserves better. Yes, the last few years have been frustrating with his injuries, and we all knew this day was coming (and may even be relieved to have his wages off the books), but he was a real star for us for a little while there. His lack of pace held him back (and–again–the injuries), but a real talent who gave us some great moments.

By the way, the decision by the club to reject the big offer from Leicester three years ago looks like a real fork-in-the-road moment. At the time, rejecting £8m (if that's what it was) seemed like a statement of intent by the club. But, knowing what we know now, it would have been good money. And McGoldrick, for all his virtues, would have been completely wrong for that Leicester team that won the title–they were all about speed, and he would have slowed them down. I expect it would have been a bad move for them and him (in football terms, anyway).

Regardless–thanks, David, for the happy memories. Good luck with whatever comes next.

Flynn Downes
at 23:49 13 Feb 2018

Just home from watching Luton-Crawley at Kenilworth Road with friends. Flynn Downes played beautifully. He was the base of a midfield diamond, orchestrating the play and spreading the ball calmly, simply and sensibly. He consistently showed for the ball and made everyone around him better. He had a number of lovely turns that made space for himself; a few interceptions and a couple of blocks; a shot of his own that was charged down; and a clearance off the line. I think he only gave the ball away a couple of times. There was one lovely moment in the second half when he stroked an elegant, simple diagonal ball out to the right wing, and the Luton fans behind me were gasping and saying to each other "who hit that pass?? who hit that pass??"

That said, he threw himself into a 50-50 early on and was yellow-carded, when on another day he might have been sent off. As a result, I expected him to be subbed in the second half, but he played with sense (helped by the fact that Luton were cruising) and lasted the full 90.

We had Three Counties Radio on in the car on the way home. Their commentator had Flynn as his man of the match and was raving about him. Numerous texts and tweets agreed. And Nathan Jones, the Luton boss, had nice (if measured) things to say about him too.

All in all: why can't we get midfielders like him?? ;-)

HT thoughts
at 20:41 22 Nov 2017

Well, that was awful.

Only three thoughts:

1) Chambers looked afraid to head the ball at the beginning–after the Hull fiasco, I suppose I can see why. He ducked out of three or four balls. Seemed to settle a little as the half went on, but I have no confidence in the two CBs.

2) Celina was not in the match at all for the first twenty minutes and barely in it after that. But, still, he produces the few moments of excitement.

3) How many of the long, cross-field balls have led to anything? Can we not get a creative midfielder on there to connect the defence to the attack? Huws for Celina? Or Garner?

If you mean the year of their debut is wrong, it's the year of their debut in the decade (so plenty of them made their actual debuts years before).

If anyone's interested, I have updated my Ipswich Players of the 2010s quiz on Sporcle after last night's excellent display by the kindergarteners :-) (Data from soccerbase, so there are probably errors; and if I've made mistakes, please let me know.)

If anyone can get 100% first time, you have my sympathy ;-)

I subscribed an hour ago; it took all my credit card info, etc. No confirmation email. The site will let me log in, but it doesn't seem to remember I've paid and when I try to watch or listen it takes me back to the payment page. No way am I putting my info in again. This is exactly the kind of nonsense that made me give up on the previous system. Bleeding amateur hour :-(
