Anyone got any thoughts on VAR?
at 16:46 22 Apr 2024

VAR is awful and is ruining football. I watched an Arsenal game where it took several minutes to confirm the goal and it completely killed the moment. Not that I cared too much, mind, but the glory of a goal being scored is the instant euphoria - it’s what got me hooked on Town 40 years ago.

Yes, injustice can be really frustrating but if the price of hyper-correct decisions is ruining the key and best aspect of live football for everyone, then no thanks.

The UK court system
at 19:06 19 Apr 2024

Covid was very disruptive for sure but in no way was or is it the cause of the current problems. I say that as a practising barrister, albeit one who stepped away from regular criminal legal aid work a few years ago as the writing was on the wall even then. In my field, we carried on throughout the pandemic with remote hearings to fill the gap.

Notably, the government has also tried to blame the spiralling NHS waiting lists on the doctors’ strikes which is equally untrue, even if there were some delays as a result.

The UK court system

Covid certainly hasn’t helped, but the CJS was already on its knees when the pandemic hit. The Tories have essentially decided to defund criminal justice and don’t care a jot for the consequences.

They are also the ones who abolished the right of an acquitted defendant from claiming their legal costs beyond the legal aid rate. So, innocent people who earn over the legal aid threshold (£733 pm of disposable income) have to fork out large private fees, which for a crown court trial could easily amount to £20k or more) and only get a fraction of that back when they’ve won their case.

Or, they have to represent themselves and are hugely prejudiced as a result.

Barristers are leaving the legally aided work in droves and many of the delays are because a barrister can’t be found, either to prosecute or defend.

Something else to remember at the ballot box.

Permutations
at 11:22 15 Apr 2024

So, if my maths is correct, this is the state of play and the maximum points each side can get (even though Southampton make this an artificial exercise):

Team Current pts Games left Max points
Ipswich 89 3 98 (9)
Leicester 88 4 100 (12)
Leeds 87 3 96 (9)
Soton 81 5 96 (15)

So, essentially if we win our remaining 3 games, we’re up no matter what. If Leicester lose one and we win all ours, we’re champions. If Leeds or Southampton lose one, we can afford to win 2 and draw 1 and still go up.

It’s nice to know there would be hope if we fell short but still nothing I would wish for or would want for a rival team (with one notable exception!)

Get VAR to the Championship

I’d take dodgy decisions and refereeing mistakes every time over the introduction of VAR. Football thrives on it being a free-flowing game and VAR just stifles it.

The aftermath of the horrendous missile attack from Derby Day rumbles on…
at 19:07 5 Jan 2024

Reading between the lines, Delia was offered the chance to follow the Norwich coach in but declined it and recklessly followed the Ipswich coach instead. In other words, she deliberately avoided a safe route and took one where fans were bound to react. And if that’s right, there’s no reason for any apology, public or otherwise. She should, and I believe did know better.

Any idea what this Brighton lad is like

He looks good on the show reel - able to draw a foul as much as get past defenders. I think he’s an exciting prospect.

How did the game come across on the telly?
at 13:33 17 Dec 2023

Thought the north stand banner (and font) was class - was featured prominently on Sky. Crowd was as loud as I’ve heard it. Overall, we clearly dominated the game but failed to keep Norwich at bay who were lucky to snatch the goals they did. That was the basic view of the commentators and pundits.

No question we badly wanted to win this one, but the smiles and celebrations at the end by Norwich showed just how worried they were about losing.

Innocent until proven guilty? Not anymore according to the Republicans
at 11:43 14 Dec 2023

This is what we would call, in the U.K., an abuse of process. Any criminal or impeachment process has to be evidence led. If there is no evidence of wrongdoing, there can be no justification for launching the equivalent of trial proceedings.

This is transparently an attempt to reduce the stain of Trump’s past impeachment and ongoing criminal/civil proceedings. And I’m sure it’s an effective tactic especially where so many Americans were willing to swallow the evidence-free claims of electoral fraud.

FFP and the January window
at 14:30 13 Nov 2023

Much as we recruited for the championship while in league 1, if we are still top two come January, we have to recruit for the PL then. It will be too late in the summer; the extent of preparation is going to be hugely demanding and can’t be done in just a few weeks.

So, league position depending - bearing in mind we will just have played Leeds and Leicester - if we’re still doing well, I would expect to see some significant recruitment in the January window.

Blood tests
at 13:18 11 Oct 2023

There’s a real skill to taking blood which can and should be near painless. If you go often enough, you can get to know the good nurses. But always tell them that you’re worried. See if you can identify a good location, eg the top of the mid-arm or even your hand as surprisingly pain free locations as compared to the crook of your arm.

But I agree re the distraction. Again, done well it should be near-painless and over very quickly.

Good luck!

Wild speculation but …

Some interesting responses, thank you - the consensus seems to be go for it and surf the TV money. I’ll still worry about the psychological impact of a swift relegation - we used to mock Man City for being promoted ‘too soon’ (to the tune of Blue Moon lol). But if managed correctly, I suppose we might just do it.

We’ll have to see!

Wild speculation but …
at 19:38 18 Sep 2023

… I’m torn between wanting Town to go up to the PL as soon as possible and the fear of being the PL whipping boys. Sensible me thinks promotion in a couple of years would be best. Yet that means we have to lose games and I can’t want that.

Anyone confident that, if promoted this season it wouldn’t be a disaster and swift relegation? Would it be a leap too far, too soon?

What are your hopes/expectations
at 20:55 23 Jul 2023

Well, in my opinion, since we've got Super Kieran McKenna and he knows exactly what we need, which would be Wolfie at the back and Ladapo in attack, Ipswich are going to win the f**king league.

I wonder if that would work well in a song?

Laptop recommendations please!
at 14:12 3 Jul 2023

Apple do student discounts and sometimes throw in a pair of AirPods with a new laptop.

I would go for the new MacBook Air with a 15” screen. The battery life is outstanding (18 hours iirc) and their machines are really solid and stable. It should last you for 5 years easily.

I switched from Apple to Windows (Lenovo) a couple of years ago and regret it. The battery life on my high-end Thinkpad is terrible (4-6 hours from new) and it still occasionally crashes. I’ll be going back to Apple as soon as I can.

Mbappe, anyone?

Hard to see him breaking into the first team squad, given Chaplin's form.

We could always buy him and loan him out to a League 1 side for him to gain experience?
