Thoroughly entertaining and dominant display against a very poor Gillingham side. The midfield really ran the show, and each of the first half goals was very well worked, worthy of a higher league. Where was this side when we played Barrow? Everybody played well, hard to single anyone out. What a tonic that was! |

I've seen Sunday league teams as good as Ipswich in that first half. Can't blame Walton, who was not given a chance by either goal, and Norwood and Jackson tried their best but I don't recall anyone ever passing to them near goal. The midfield and the defence were just amaterurish. If we performed like this every week we'd be in a relegation scrap in L2.
Barrow were winning all the second balls. When they broke, they had men in space all the time. When we got the ball, every man was marked. Utterly clueless.
Sadly I'm beginning to think our much hyped summer recruits aren't actually all that good. |

Four- or five-nil would have been a fair result. A brief period on the front foot in the first quarter evaporated and after that we hadn't a clue. We really looked like a team struggling to keep out of the relegation zone. Forget the playoffs, let's just try to get it together enough to stay mid table.
Good luck John, you've taken on quite a task.
Hope Ashton can find somebody to grab this squad by the scruff and wring a consistent performance out of them. |

What can you make of that? A match we were controlling, a good opening goal, then Bonne amazingly contrives to make and then miss an open goal, and we were never the same again. Cheltenham grew into it, took their chances, we never really made any more chances, and it all slipped away. By the end we looked well beaten. We lost it in midfield - couldn't stop them overrunning us when they were coming forward, couldn't make chances when we were on the attack. It's clear Cook hasn't got the right components of this team together - yet (I hope). But we are already falling some way behind the pace of the early league leaders... |

Another toothless performance, at least we created four or five decent chances but our finishing was mostly awful. Defensively we were largely solid but Holy had to make three very good saves to maintain the clean sheet – by contrast I don’t remember their goalie having to make any. Slightly better than the last dismal outing but nowhere near better enough. Another chance missed against pretty poor opposition.
Positives? Downes was excellent, Nydam looked good as a late substitute, Holy never looked like being beaten… but that’s about it.

A dire dreary game that had nil-nil all over it from start to finish. Two very poor sides, if anything Rochdale deserved it more. I don't recall us having a single shot on target; indeed I struggle to remember more than a couple of shots at all. No pass and move, mostly just hoof it up field. Sorry, but forget the play-offs.

A truly awful game lacking in any quality. Both sides looked like relegation contenders; if anything Bristol were the better side. Judge scored a really good goal with our one moment of quality in the penalty area, Bristol obligingly scored both the others. Just a couple of times there was a slick passing movement between a group of Town players, and you wondered why they couldn’t do this on a regular basis.
We all need to prepare ourselves for another season in League One. Unless we mysteriously and suddenly improve radically, then even if we make the play-offs, we’ve no chance of winning them. At least we look safe from relegation… I think…

We started like a train, Plymouth were awful, but we gradually lost our way and by the end were hanging on. The problem remains our lack of penetration, although Jackson missed a one-on-one with the keeper, and then Judge blazed high and wide when unchallenged near the penalty spot. At least we still look defensively solid. Still much for Cook to work on. |

Clearly the better side, and a man up for most of the game, yet we contrived to make very heavy weather of it. Chances went begging, so often good moves petered out, and the longer the game went on the more likely it looked that the next goal might come from AS - fortunately it didn't. AS generally poor, we should have won more easily. |

Much more like it - fast zippy interchanges with purpose. On another day I'd worry that two gilt-edged chances went begging, and we are still capable of lapses in defence, but overall a really positive performance. If we played like that every week we'd still be in the mix. |

ITFC deserved a draw from this. Second best for the first half hour, gifted Sunderland a goal, then a fine Edwards run and cool Lankaster finish brought us level. Suddenly we were competing better.
Overall, it looked as though our defence was on top, their defence always looked wobbly, but we still had trouble linking midfield and attack.
Main problem was the ref - Foul after foul by Sunderland, including one nasty late ankle crunch, and still no card.
Then in second half a 50-50 ball contested by Dozzell, fairly it seemed to me, resulted in a red card. Where did that come from? More importantly why? The players seemed equally baffled.
Despite this we still didn't really look like conceding, until a ball to hand incident - no way McGuinness could avoid it - and a really harsh spot kick awarded.
So feeling more cross than disheartened I still think we can challenge again based on this. |

I thought we were supposed to be playing out from the back? We actually played it around at the back until chased down, then it was a long ball forward back into Crewe possession. A fair result would have been 0-2, but somehow we nicked it. To be fair our defence was resolute, Woolfenden and McGuinness were excellent and Holy had perhaps his best game so far.
The midfield was largely overrun and the forward line barely had a sniff. Only Bishop made any good runs, and these mostly came to naught as he had no support.

This was a curious game. Shortly after kickoff, McGoldrick was lucky to remain on the field, after a dreadful challenge by Loovens planting his studs in McGoldrick’s groin left the Ipswich striker wondering if he could still father children, and Loovens, even luckier to remain, wondering how the referee could fail to issue even a yellow, let alone the red he clearly deserved.
Ipswich played their usual 6-0-4 formation, the absence of a midfield explaining the reason why every time we won the ball it was hoofed long for the forwards to chase. SW had all the possession, and weaved pretty patterns in midfield, but couldn’t find any cutting edge; IT had all the chances but planted most of them into the goalkeeper’s midriff. One clear chance for Jordan Rhodes defied logic when he glanced his free header wide; but Bersant, McGoldrick and Waghorn also had clear chances that were wasted. We could have been two or three up by half time.
After the break, with McGoldrick unable to continue thanks to his groin injury, the introduced Sears proved lively, and Ipswich got the goal they deserved from a corner. The ball whipped in, a glance on from the head of Spence, and Garner gratefully swept the ball into the net.
After this, SW got a bit more urgency, but still for all their possession failed to make a clear chance. Ipswich were still fashioning and wasting opportunities on the break, the worst offender Sears, sent clear by a lovely ball from Waghorn. He rounded the advancing Westwood but took the ball too wide, and by the time he checked and cut back, the keeper had recovered his position. Instead of feeding the unmarked Celina, Sears shot against the keeper – chance gone.
Then out of nothing, a floated ball to the far post, Spence rose to head but couldn’t quite reach, and the ball hit his arm. Clearly not intentional, but unwise. Penalty, said the ref, and from a position of no real danger, to Hooper slamming the ball past Bialkowski from the spot.
Still Ipswich came again, driven on by Huws, brought on for the disappointing Celina. Sears floated an intelligent ball beyond the far post, Huws did brilliantly to hook it back across goal, and Waghorn fashioned a superb header to guide the ball beyond Westwood.
That looked to be that. SW didn’t really threaten again, and as the game drifted into five minutes of stoppage time, Ipswich spent much of that by Wednesday’s corner flag running down the clock. It finally broke down, and with the ref checking his watch, a final Wednesday attack saw Adam Reach living up to his name at the left side of the goal line and drifting a cross into the goal area where man mountain Nuhiu nodded into the net.
An undeserved point rescued for the Sheffield side, and although Ipswich can be justifiably miffed that the challenge which took the stuffing – almost literally – out of the classy McGoldrick went unpunished, they should have taken more of their chances and could have run out comfortable winners. In the end, the team skilled in grabbing points at the death had it done to them. |

A good point, hard fought; we didn't do enough to win it but frankly neither did Norwich - a draw the fair result.
We looked a bit better when Knudsen went to wing back and Smith came into the back three. I don't think Sears is really a front man, but Keiffer Moore didn't look the part when he came on either. Spence looked really good going forward, but occasionally lost his man going back and was sometimes beaten a bit too easily. We do look better when we pass the ball and don't just hoof it upfield.
Still, plenty of grounds for optimism. I'm almost at the point where I look forward to the next match with excitement rather than foreboding! It must be nearly time to start trying out fringe players/youngsters, especially where we know loan players will not convert to permanent staff - like Lawrence for example. |

It is extremely disappointing and worrying to be obviously second best to an ordinary mid-table side, and the current relegation form does not bode well. If we are to have any success - or on recent evidence, comfortable survival - next season then wholesale changes to the squad are required. There are several squad members who are clearly not good enough, and I fear we should add Hyam to the list today as not to be trusted to keep (and use) his head.
Squad members should now realise that for the rest of this season, they are playing for their futures - and indeed MM needs to show there are grounds for optimism if he is not to be part of the same clear-out. |
