The home v away thing
at 13:26 24 Apr 2024

A lot to be said for routine - sleeping in your own bed, driving your car to the ground, our recent thing of meeting at the training ground for lunch etc.

There is also a very marginal thing about the knowledge of your own ground/pitch - think of a player like Chaplin for instance who runs on almost pure instinct, I would imagine the geography of where he is on the pitch/in Portman Road is a helpful reminder of when playing those first time volleyed passes.

I also think we play better when we play later in the day, so hopeful for Hull and Coventry but worried about Huddersfield!

Huddersfield tickets
at 09:35 24 Apr 2024

FWIW I don't particularly love the priority order either - a member who has gone to a load of home games this season but isn't a season ticket holder doesn't necessarily make them a particularly long-standing or loyal fan against some others who may live further afield etc.

There is not perfect solution with this and the away points thing, but it does feel like a bandwagon jumper of the last 18 months has jumped the queue ahead of some people who have supported the club for decades via better organisation. Coupled with the Idea that the home loyalty points have only been used in this way for one game (and memberships still being able to be bought up until this was public knowledge with the idea that they'd give you boosted ticket availability) means that some people have a reason to be annoyed at missing out at a huge game in a way that they wouldn't have previously imo.

Will you be disappointed…
at 09:35 23 Apr 2024

Of course there will be sadness and annoyance to come this close and miss out, but these are the seasons I want to be involved in, and my hope that we get to the Premier League is just so we can keep players/managers/make some money to be competitive again at this level when we come back down.

The past two years of supporting Ipswich have been an absolute dream considering where we started, and I don't think the outcome of the next 10 days or so changes that too much for me.

Played well today I thought
at 17:51 13 Apr 2024

Back to our snappy best in the first half, unlucky to go behind and should have got another goal (at least) ourselves but did well.

What’s lacking at the moment is the squad depth and fitness to change games late on. We didn’t have direct running threat off the bench today and so whilst we brought good players on, they didn’t look to stretch the game. Burns, Hirst and Clarke potentially being back for the last week of the season adds plenty of that.

It’s been a weird and kind of frustrating way to do it, but we are top of the league after a week in which we’ve lost to Norwich and haven’t won a game. It is entirely in our hands and whilst we haven’t capitalised, we certainly don’t look the wobbliest of the contenders. It will probably help us to know exactly what we need from our games given the way the fixtures fall, but I’d like to think now that two wins out of three will see us over the line. See you all at Hull and Coventry!

Parking at Gatwick
at 14:24 10 Apr 2024

In a strange TWTD circle of life moment, I have to drive to Gatwick immediately after tonight's game.

As someone who lives in Ipswich I haven't really experienced the fight to get to the A12 after a game before any tips for best route out? Any advice on roadworks planned on A12/M25 also appreciated, thanks.

Yeah brilliant, and a very good last series full of laugh out loud moments.

I have never watched Seinfeld so some of the parallels there were a bit lost on me but was very nicely done.

36,500 people take it in turns to fight Fabio Wardley one by one for their ticket, if he wins he gets to keep it.

Wembley ticket scenarios
at 10:59 9 Apr 2024

I would have thought just season ticket holders first dibs, and then members. Be surprised if that total is more than 36,500 - don't think away points would be considered.

Of course that number may be way lower once staff and Fabio Wardley's entourage are accounted for.

Five massive games remaining now....
at 10:39 8 Apr 2024

The beauty of Burns (and Hirst in a different role) is that he is a capable and dangerous player both into feet and as an in behind runner. That means we can do different things in our build-up and the left hand side defensive players out of possession for the opposition are reluctant to commit too much to one option or the other. With Jackson it is too often clipped in behind and with Hutchinson it is almost always to feet and therefore it's a bit easier to squeeze either of those options.

Losing that direct pace in behind from Hirst in the central option has lessened the impact of our more central attacking players (Broadhead and Chaplin normally) in that everything is much more congested. Moore's hold-up play is on a completely different level to Hirst but ultimately the centre backs can afford to be a few yards higher up to squeeze the box where we like to find joy.

Moore and Hutchinson are probably two of our better players (and have been in the best form) but I don't think you can have them play those two roles simultaneously without a genuine running threat behind from somewhere.

Five massive games remaining now....
at 10:25 8 Apr 2024

They're all cup finals now, but Watford really are the sort of side that could cause us problems with the shackles off. As you say they have running power, strength and also tonnes of quality that doesn't represent their season to date. Hate to be that guy but it can't be one of those Portman Road nights where people turn-up expecting a walkover.

Boro on Saturday a different kettle of fish - the form team in the league now - but will be on the second leg of a really difficult double away (Hull then us) and really have to beat us both to have any chance of sneaking in the play-offs. Think in normal circumstances they'd come and be cagey here but I like our chances against a more open side.

Six points seems like a must so that it isn't a mountain to climb when we face Hull, but I do fancy Millwall to cause Leicester some problems tomorrow and I hope some other wacky results derail them and Leeds in the next few weeks.

Phil can you ask the club to clarify this ticket situation?
at 14:21 7 Apr 2024

Obviously more to come out about this, but it doesn’t seem right that the club (be that Ashton or somebody else) feels that the tickets are theirs to distribute to anyone - they are tickets for the fans to watch their team, not some token of goodwill for staff.

My thoughts on yesterday
at 14:18 7 Apr 2024

Pre-match

The policing on the walk to the ground from the townhouse was dangerous and heads should roll over the logistics of that. Two genuine flashpoints where they escorted the walking Ipswich fans into a waiting 30-50 Norwich group. Plenty of posturing and few actual punches thrown, but could have been absolute carnage in other circumstances. Don’t be surprised if the Norfolk plod response is to close the Townhouse next time rather than blame their operation.

The game

Another one where our midfield balance caused us problems for me. We struggle when teams pick up pockets wide of our midfield two to create double ups - Morsy/Luongo don’t want to vacate their space, the full backs don’t want to over-commit and the tens are not really interested in that work. Stuart Armstrong did it masterfully for Southampton the other day and it’s a worry that we can’t really get out easily in these games because of massed bodies squeezing our space (two banks of four out of possession for Norwich) but that others can get through us quite easily by playing into that wide midfield channel. Ultimately it was a very low quality game and Norwich will be delighted but I’d fancy us to work it out a bit in a two-legged play-off game.

Atmosphere

Definitely the worst from us I can ever remember there, by quite a distance. Obviously lots of talk of these free 400 tickets but it didn’t seem like there was 1,600 others chomping at the bit for it either. Usually at Norwich it’s a case of too many people trying to get chants going at once, but yesterday there were just hundreds stood there offering nothing. In the early second half there was a concerted effort to get blue and white army going for a long time and it could have been a Barnsley-esque moment but it just never gained enough momentum despite a fair few trying.

Betting Types - What are the odds on Ipswich NOT getting promoted?
at 13:32 4 Apr 2024

We are 6/4 to not go up with skybet.

I think we are realistically just about outsiders for the top 2 and I’m not sure we’d be clear favs for the playoffs so it’s not the worst bet you’ll ever had, but the doom-mongering in your post is way OTT.

Normally I'd say a nice early goal to settle our nerves, but I actually think with this team I'd prefer to be 1-0 down than 1-0 up in the 75th minute.

Interesting view on Martin from Loft for Words
at 13:08 3 Apr 2024

FWIW I thought they were the best team we've played at PR this season for large swathes - brilliant positional interplay, well drilled press and obviously some very good players. They could have blown us away really, but it was kind of telling that they didn't (and you always knew we were going to finish like a train so the game was alive for as long as it stays 2-1).

As a counterpoint to the compliment, I did spend most of the 90 minutes wishing I had an opportunity to punch Martin square in the face repeatedly.
