The spread of goals across our squad - a real team effort
at 09:10 17 Mar 2024

We're the highest scoring team in the country, and yet our top scorers 'only' have 12 goals, with significant goal totals from across the whole squad.

That really sums up how much of a team effort this season has been, and the fact that McKenna and his coaching team make sure that we're a goal threat from so many in game situations.

Luongo was back on his A game today
at 18:50 16 Mar 2024

I think he's been a bit quiet for the last month or so, but he was excellent today, and a big part of why we dominated.

Great to see, and hopefully a good sign for the run in.

Well colour me shocked.

Frog spawn!
at 19:17 12 Mar 2024

Unusual request incoming

If anyone (ideally Ipswich area) has any frogspawn (or toad spawn) they can spare, please let me know.

I dug a wildlife pond in the garden over the winter, and I'm keen to give it a kickstart with some wildlife. Already got a number of bugs in there, but a bit lacking in amphibians at the moment.

Cheers

Injury time and very late goals
at 08:47 10 Mar 2024

As frustrating as yesterday was - and no dressing it up as anything other than sh1t - I think its worth considering that we've been beneficiaries of injury time/late goals a fair bit this season.

Huddersfield away
Birmingham away
Leicester home
WBA home
Rotherham home
Birmingham home
Bristol City home

All off the top of my head.

Rotherham away and yesterday are the two that jump out in the deficit column

We got it horribly wrong after we scored yesterday, and I'm not quite sure why or how when you see how we managed injury time against Bristol City, but I guess it's worth bearing in mind that we're not the only team that will throw the kitchen sink at games to get something out of it at the end.

Sarmiento is so much better from the bench than starting
at 17:51 9 Mar 2024

Every time he comes off the bench he looks a real asset to us, and yet whenever he starts he really struggles to get into the game.

obviously, coming on against tired legs helps, but the difference in performance from him is pretty stark. Whereas on the other flank the alternating starts for Burns and Hutchinson still keeps us strong for the 90 minutes.

It's not lack of effort from Sarmiento, and his defensive work is sound, but with the ball it doesn't seem to come off for him when starting.

Hopefully Broadhead is fully fit again by next week!

The quadruple substitution was the moment the game changed
at 23:55 5 Mar 2024

Sort of stating the obvious, I know, but until that point we were still labouring a bit and the 4 players taken off were all struggling to really get into the game. All of a sudden we started doing things much quicker, much more direct, and asking a lot of questions of their defence that we hadn't really been doing until that point.

So many games this season we've seen the subs come on and have an impact, but probably not many as dramatically as tonight I don't think.

It says a lot about this team though, that even at 2-1 down, even after the late missed penalty, there was still a belief in the stadium that we could get the win.

Inconsistency of refs is so frustrating
at 23:26 5 Mar 2024

We had a ref on Saturday who was giving free kicks for the slightest of contacts, but then tonight's joker seemed determined to allow almost everything to go. Not seen a replay, but looked a clear foul on Omari leading up to their opener.

Must be so hard for players to work out what the line is from game to game.

Edit: Just seen a replay and not really a clear foul on Omari for their goal, though Saturday's ref would have given it!

The league table is now fairly set in terms of groupings
at 10:11 4 Mar 2024

The top 4 has looked fairly set for a few months, but it now looks like a fairly small group of teams battling for 5th and 6th, with Coventry in 9th being the lowest still with a realistic shout. There is a small handful of teams where the season is effectively over, and then most of the bottom half needing wins to avoid being sucked into what looks like being a really nasty relegation scrap.

The play off chase seems to have been narrowed down in recent weeks with a few mid table teams losing form, and whereas not long ago Wednesday and QPR looked doomed, I think both will now stay up.

Still a bit annoyed that Southampton got that late winner
at 22:54 2 Mar 2024

I know that's greedy, given the results overall today, but a 7 point gap and more dropped points for them would have been huge. That would have put them as huge outsiders at this point to grab an automatic spot.

As it is, they suddenly look very beatable, and are letting in goals for fun - 13 in the last 6, plus 3 against Liverpool reserves.

Bored of rain now
at 17:43 29 Feb 2024

Really bored.

I think I read somewhere the other day that we've had 200% of the usual Winter rainfall this year, and Autumn will have been a similar increase.

Really noticeable that all the fields around Suffolk are completely waterlogged now, so any significant rain means instant flooding of rural roads.

Worst ever loan signing

As an alternative to the best loanee thread, how about a worst loanee?

Two stand out for me.

Tony Dinning
Danny Karbassiyoon

Both utterly hopeless

We're scoring for fun again, since the end of the transfer window
at 23:27 20 Feb 2024

Lots of (understandable) grumbling about the performance tonight, so I'm going to highlight a major positive of the last few weeks.

Since the end of the window, and in particular getting Moore in, we've started scoring for fun again. 14 goals in 5 games, and that after a run where we were finding goals much harder to come by.

Appreciate that the level of opponent helps, though we did draw also blanks against both QPR and Stoke in the dry run, but it gives much more confidence that we can overcome the occasional (!) defensive lapse if we're able to score at will.
