Relative run-ins
at 12:04 4 Mar 2024

Just took a look at the run-in for the top four. Not that scientific but by adding up current league position of opponents Leeds have the easiest run in followed by us then Leicester then Southampton. We all play at least one other team in the top four but Southampton have to play both Leicester and Leeds.

I'm thinking if we keep a decent run to the Southampton game and win it could be pretty decisive.

Blue Card = 10 minute sin bin
at 17:20 8 Feb 2024

IFAB are trialling blue cards for dissent and "cynical" fouls. Will be a ten minute sin bin. Not at the professional level to begin with but planning to go throughout the game.

Personally I like it, hopefully they extend to all unsportsmanlike conduct including obvious dives.

Small sided youth games = better players. Discuss.
at 08:01 13 Sep 2023

Bellingham was great last night, as others have said, now a world class player with time to develop further. At the same time we're nearly ten years on from the FAs decision to run smaller sided games at the youth level.

Bellingham would be one of the first to play under the new set up, with an extra few years playing 9 aside rather than going straight to 11 aside at U11s.

Coincidence, or might we expect more skilled players coming through?

Surrey vs Middlesex - amazing game of T20
at 10:25 23 Jun 2023

Was at the Oval last night for Surrey vs Middlesex. With Middlesex having lost every match so far this year Surrey set them a target of 252 to beat a ground record at the Oval. Middlesex managed it with balls to spare. Just goes to show never give up!

Google and League One

Google hasn't yet realised I'm no longer interested in League One, so I keep getting fed stories about Portsmouth, Bolton etc. Makes me realise two things:

1 Some big clubs still down there
2 It's f***king great to be out of that league!

Crawley vs Foakes
at 13:17 18 May 2023

Just watching Surrey Kent from the office window and was enjoying watching Crawley with Foakes keeping behind. Crawley set himself up well, started to play some classy shots and then nicked off for 19 (to slip not Foakes).

How is he keeping his place in the England side?

Ipswich a new hope
at 18:33 15 Apr 2023

Watched the game online with my son today. We live in North London and my wife works Saturdays so we rarely get to games. Always been a battle keeping him in the straight and narrow (football wise he's a good lad) and away from supporting Spurs.

Today's romp coincided with Spurs losing to Bournemouth. After our third goal flew in the boot turned to me and said "That's it, I'm just an Ipswich fan now dad."

That's what this team are doing for our club.

Closing the gap on Plymouth
at 13:23 15 Mar 2023

Looking at Plymouth's run in I think our opportunities are one of the relegation teams forcing a draw away (Accrington or Morecambe) or Exeter City doing us a favour in the local derby match. Other than that they are facing mid-table teams with little to play for.

Set against that we really need to win the next four games, including three against play-off contenders, to stay in touch and have a chance to sneak ahead. Could maybe get away with one draw from those if Plymouth also drop points.

Finely balanced but we are going to need some luck to get in the top two.

I have it on good authority (mate who used to work for the club) that Matt Bloomfield will be taking the Wycombe job and ditching Colchester.

Charlie McNeill - Daily Star
at 15:39 9 Jan 2023

According to Craig Farnsworth at the Daily Star we are leading the race for Charlie McNeill on loan. Seems unlikely to me given recent business. Is this a case of journo spots obvious story around the link to McKenna or is our strike force about to become very crowded?

Pizza cup seats
at 15:25 2 Aug 2022

Going to my first ever Pizza CUP (EFL Trophy) game against Colchester with my 13 year old as it's the only game on while his friend is down with us for a few days. Given the stadium is likely to be pretty quiet any recommendations on where to sit to get the best atmosphere. I was thinking section 6 the most obvious choice but is it pretty dead anyway for these games?

Mckenna - Character reference
at 14:16 19 Jul 2022

I was chatting to a work contact today who coaches at Man U. He knew Mckenna for a few years and was saying what a great character we have recruited. I think we all knew this already, but he also had some interesting thoughts on the strength of his connection with younger players. He was also saying how much harder it is getting for "old school" managers to come in and get the best out of the younger generation as their expectations have changed so much.

Radio 4 Appeal - Chance to Shine cricket charity
at 15:43 17 May 2022

I know there are a few other cricket fans on here so thought you might want a listen of the appeal I wrote for Mark Nicholas to read out on Radio 4.

Chance to Shine is a great charity taking cricket into state schools and more deprived urban communities. Especially at a time when cricket is facing some real questions over inclusivity, I love working somewhere that helps all children get involved in the game.
