Southgate on borrowed time?
at 14:48 25 Mar 2024

Apologies re Holland but the point still stands about home advantage, just look at South Korea in 2002.

Southgate has done a very good job for England just like Chris Coleman did at Wales, but I certainly wouldn't call him an excellent manager.

Do you expect him to excel in club management after England?

Of course luck plays a big part in any tournament success but most national managers won't get the opportunities of such an easy route in 2018 or home advantage in 2021.

And there are some managers out there, not many, but some who would have taken better advantage of those moments.

Southgate on borrowed time?
at 13:53 25 Mar 2024

Getting to a final must be put in the context of having home advantage which is huge and that's essentially what we had in 2021 (bar Ukraine).

In 66 we won World Cup and in 96 got to the semi but had a much harder knockout phase (Spain, Holland and Germany) ... in 2021 yes we made the final but bar a subpar Germany played no major power to get there.

Few think Southgate hasn't done well, but the key issue is whether he possesses the managerial qualities to win crucial games and come out on top in key moments.

Southgate lost it tactically second half against Croatia in 2018 after being a gifted an easy route to the semi and was out manoeuvred in 2021 by Mancini's Italy who then didn't even qualify for the World Cup.

Many England fans suspect we won't win a tournament with Southgate in charge and they're probably right, and it is a farce that we haven't won anything since 66 when you bear in mind some of the nations that have lifted a trophy in that time (Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Greece and Portugal).

Would you bet on Southgate having a successful career as a club manager after England? Much more likely to be another Chris Coleman in my estimation and look what he did for Wales.

Personally would give the job to Mourinho, could be disastrous, but he's clearly no longer motivated by club management and the prospect of lifting a World Cup/Euros for his adopted nation would undoubtedly reignite his managerial fire.

Is this all desperately horrendous
at 21:30 22 Mar 2024

Who would have thought that Norwich fans are so hysterically insecure?

Three or four years ago we seemingly posed as much threat to their idea of an East Anglian hegemony as Colchester United.

Now that the writing is on the wall flapping budgies are in collective meltdown.

5-0 and we still don't sing
at 08:29 17 Mar 2024

Depends entirely where you sit, down by Sir Bobby Wednesday fans were inaudible throughout the game because of constant Town singing.

The Sir Alf has always been more quiet ... like every football ground in the country some parts are noisier than others ... so away fans at Ipswich inevitably get a skewed perspective.

And if you have been going 45 years then by God you've got a dreadful memory, in the Fergie or Duncan years half empty Portman Road was a cauldron of silence, you had more chance of developing tinnitus in a library.

Currently averaging a club record of nearly 29,000 (let down only by some very poor away followings), Town taking more away than most in the division and yet our support is still not good enough for some ... a tad bizarre.

20 Points Ahead of Scum
at 08:40 3 Mar 2024

Agreed, but they are petrified a tipping point in the balance of power has finally arrived ..

Wrath of the Barclay is obsessed with our season, every game they are updating each other on our scoreline, the pain is palpable whenever we win.

They think we're running on ludicrous levels of luck, much like 2014-2015, but unfortunately for them the sea change in our football club runs much deeper.

Budgies are an insecure bunch when it comes to our rivalry and their insecurities are on full display at the moment which is a joy to behold.

That said if we do go up I would actually want them to join us, say in a year or two once our regional dominance is firmly re-established, because I love the East Anglian derby.

Sheffield is Yorkshire's number one football city ... Leeds is a distant second even if you merge them with Bradford.

Replacement for McKenna….

Why on earth would he go to Croydon Palace this season .... smaller club on a downward spiral with a decrepit stadium that backs onto a supermarket and likely to be playing Championship football in August.

Calling it now - I have a feeling we'll beat Leicester 2-0

No problem ... many of us are fearful of admitting to these feelings ... but I'm sensing a 3-1 or 4-2 victory ...

Sarmiento screamer will wrap things up ...

Can't see us winning this Saturday
at 14:03 11 Jan 2024

Sunderland lost at Stoke as did Leeds, both in the darkish days of departed Alex Neil.

Under Schumacher, Stoke haven't yet lost and he certainly wasn't of the view that we were bang average on New Year's Day.

I'd also say Sunderland looked bang average against an out of sorts Newcastle (Wednesday gave them a much better game last season).

And without Patrick Roberts or Bradley Dack available this weekend they are a far less threatening force going forward, so I wouldn't give up and throw the towel in quite yet.

Ladapo

Endlessly banging about how Ladapo is not up to standard ... it's so boring.

We all know he ain't no Marco Van Basten but there's no alternative available in the building right now.

He can score goals at this level as he proved against Cardiff City ..

But if he feels most fans think he's utter shyte then don't be surprised if on the pitch it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy ..

We just need him to do a job for the next three months, so stop getting on his back ...

Ladapo is a much better option in that role ... Jackson is not the answer even in the short term.

Anyone tell me words to the "...Merry Christmas, N*rwich sc*m" chant?
at 09:43 14 Dec 2023

Lyrics are ... "Barclay's falling ... " much better, highlights the overdue collapse of Norwich City Football Club which we should unconditionally celebrate.

"Ipswich scoring all around us" is a bit meh and happy clappy ....

Regarding Singin' The Blues if we must have that played over the tannoy can we please revert back to the original lyrics "when Ipswich win and Norwich lose" ....

The watered down "when others lose" is so bland and meaningless and makes us sound rather dull and petty.

If the majority of football fans want VAR removed from the game then it should go.

The 'technology' has corrupted football as a spectator sport to such a degree that a nationwide campaign led by fans is now needed to get rid of VAR.

The experiment has failed monstrously, do not let clipboard referees and their allies double down on the calamity any longer.

Brexit
at 12:25 23 Nov 2023

Is change really always an easier sell? In 1975 referendum, voters decided to stay in the Common Market, in 2011 Altervative Voting referendum voters retained the first past the post system and in 2014 Scottish voters opted to remain part of the Union.

Seems far too many Remainers just made a very pisspoor case for staying in the EU, often preferring to ridicule the intelligence of the Brexit voting working class.

Leading Remainers from the Blair years onwards were too arrogant, complacent and thick to see the growing threat which they had helped develop.

Now we must all pay the price because it was a catastrophic outcome.

VAR is the single worst introduction to football in the history of the game, should be scrapped with only goal line technology retained.

Not only is it destroying the core theatrical component of the football fan experience, celebrating a goal, it has also become the dullest post-match talking point in the history of post-match talking points.

VAR has done zilch to enhance the beauty of the beautiful game, it's the equivalent of going to a cosmetic surgeon to turn yourself into The Elephant Man.

Fans of all clubs in all four divisions should unite and kick VAR out of football for good.

The xenophobic MP for Ipswich rarely hears English in the town apparently
at 12:47 25 Oct 2023

Amazing what a quick google search reveals:

Memories of King’s Ely by Tom Hunt MP:

“I was a pupil at King’s Ely from the age of 4 right the way through to completing my GCSEs.

“I was diagnosed with both dyslexia and dyspraxia at quite an early age. It was the amazing support I received from the team at King’s Ely Acremont that provided me with the foundations that eventually enabled me to overcome these difficulties and achieve success academically. I genuinely believe that if I hadn’t been lucky enough to go to King’s Ely and get the support I received, there is no way I would be where I am today.

“My favourite subject at school was History. Mr Lowery, who was my History Teacher at King’s Ely Junior, really brought the Battle of 1066 alive and it was then my favourite subject going forward throughout school. I also liked football and cross country!

“To this day I continue to enjoy close friendships with many of the people I met at King’s Ely. I remember my time at school with great fondness.”

According to Wikipedia, he then went to a state sixth form college in Cambridge, Hills Road Sixth Form College, before studying politics and modern history at Manchester University and then completing a masters at Oxford University (Pembroke College).

Certainly would be interesting to learn how Mr Lowery brought the Battle of Hastings alive. Did he teach wearing Norman chain mail with a sucker arrow in one eye?

Anyway now we know, a moderately blended private-state education and as a human being possibly more of a curate's egg than a complete and utter posterior.
