Millwall perspective

Thought that you might want an opposition view about yesterday and your situation. Firstly I should declare that I have always had an affinity for Ipswich and have gone to most of the Millwall games played both home and away with two very good Ipswich friends. Over the years our record against you has been particularly bad and so yesterday’s result was something surprising even though you are doing so badly at the moment.

I don’t need to rub salt in the wound by telling you how bad you were yesterday as you obviously know that. The issue I want to talk about is whether you have enough to avoid relegation. On yesterday’s showing its hard to see primarily because you seem to lack real leadership and identity on the pitch. Getting Lambert in was a very good move because he has a decent record and has the time to try and motivate clearly dispirited players. 31 games is plenty to do that. It was always going to be a really difficult ask for you when you sold four really good players in the summer and the recruitment of their replacements was so poor (apart from Edwards who I really rate -and why did he only get 10 minutes or so yesterday?)

The main thing is to get to January without losing touch and for that to happen you need some good results and fast. The squad has some reasonable players but Lambert’s role will be pivotal. You also desperately need some better strikers and even more important some sensible tactics. Punting the ball forward to Sears was always going to be pretty hopeless against our two towering central defenders Cooper and Hutchinson.

Nothing particularly original i accept in what I have said but i wish you all the best for the season as long as you don’t stay up at our expense. I really hope that I can come to PR next season as well as this to see you play the brand of football that has served you very well over the years.
