Quiet Deadline Day
Quiet Deadline Day
Thursday, 25th Mar 2004 13:10

Town manager Joe Royle says that today's transfer deadline has been the quietest he's known. There are no moves in or out of Town, although Matt Elliott could remain for longer than his initial one-month loan.

Royle said: “There's nothing happening. This is the quietest deadline day there's been. A journalist rang me yesterday and told me that two players were going from Crewe to Bristol Rovers and that was all he had to write about.”

The Town boss says that Watford are no longer targeting Georges Santos: “Watford haven't pursued their interest in Georges Santos. There was a strong interest and I know his agent has spoken to them.

“I don't think it was anything that Georges asked about, I think that money is tight at the moment; they've looked at their pennies and decided not to take their interest further.

“There have been other enquiries about loans but we don't particularly want Georges to go out on loan. The idea was that if he went it gave him a chance and cleared the wage bill a little bit to allow us to do something either now or in the summer.”

Royle allowing Santos to leave suggested that Matt Elliott may be set to remain at Portman Road for longer. The Town manager says that he could stay for the rest of the season: “I've spoken with Matt and we're going to look at it as it goes along.

”Whilst we're in contention for the play-offs he's certainly very happy here and he's enjoying his football. If at any point we weren't in contention for the play-offs then that's another consideration for us.

“The arrangement suits us, Matt and Leicester, in case they need to take him back if there's a crisis there. At the moment Matt's very happy here and we have a nodding agreement that he'll stay here as long as we need him.”
