De Zerbi: Sarmiento Was Important For Ipswich
Saturday, 11th May 2024 17:34

Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi says he has kept a close eye on Jeremy Sarmiento during his loan spell with the Blues.

The Ecuadorian international made a number of big contributions as Town secured promotion to the Premier League, not least the late goals against Southampton and Leicester.

In total, Sarmiento, 21, made six starts and 16 sub appearances for the Blues, scoring four goals.

“I followed him. I watched many games,” De Zerbi said. “He didn’t play so any games in the first XI but he was important for Ipswich. In West Bromwich [where he was on loan in the first half of the season] the same, I think.

“He needs to play in a different context. He can play number 10, he can play winger but he has to play a particular type of football.

“Ipswich and West Bromwich played in a good style. He can be important next season, but we have to analyse the squad, the new players, the players like Deniz Undav [who is on loan at VfB Stuttgart] if he comes back or not, I don’t know.”

At the time Sarmiento joined Town in January, it was reported in Ecuador that the deal could see the forward return to the Blues on loan in the summer. However, promotion to the Premier League means Town are only able to sign two loan players ahead of 2024/25.

Didn’t let any body down — but equally didn’t shine l8e OH . Still has lots to learn but does have the potential .
KM and MA will start to reveal the ‘future’ next week .
It’ll be interesting* to say the least .

Plenty of potential to develop. I hope we keep him.

I really liked him , but worth only 2 loan slots we need players who will contribute more overall, improve the 1st eleven ( if possible as a inter prem loan..overseas maybe) Jeremy was more impact sub

We need loans that add experience imo. Players who don't make the 25 Premier League squads: we might be waiting till September for one or two.

Can’t see him returning. Two loans only. Plus we may need 10-12 signings with players leaving. Loans going back to parent clubs. Interesting summer ahead.

I think , sign our loan players and add 3 or four more quality loans, like last season.

De Zerbi is trying to talk up Sarimiento’s value.

FYI, regarding loans, this is what the Premier league website says:

https://www.premierleague.com/news/464747

- Premier League clubs may not register more than two players on loan at any one time.
- The maximum number of loans registrable in the same season is four, and, under no circumstances, shall more than one be from the same club at any one time.
- Premier League clubs cannot loan to another Premier League club a player they have acquired in the same transfer window.
- A Premier League club may loan not more than one of its goalkeepers to another Premier League club.

I thought he came in and definitely played his part but if we're to give ourselves the best chance of staying up then we have to take all sentiment out of any decisions to keep players. I would personally hope we could attract a better calibre of player now and make better use of the two loans.

Recent history tells us that January loan signings can be vital for success so I think we need to start with players that belong to us. I really hope we can get Omari and Keifer in for sensible prices. I did think we needed two new CBs to help LW and CB but if Tuanzebe can get fully fit then we probably just need one more. We’ve been very short on cover at RB and LB and at number nine. SKM knows exactly what we need.

We should be prepared for some tough decisions being made. Some fantastic servants over the last 2 seasons may leave as there is no room to keep them. I hope that where that is the case there is mo ill-feeling. Not wishing to sound pessimistic but KMcK and MA will not doubt have a contingency for possible relegation. Whatever happens I hope to hell we don't dilute team spirit. I have every confidence they will have that in mind.

We should sign him for that last second winner vs Southampton alone..moment of the season for me.

No doubt Brighton will be asking silly money.

He has been a valuable asset in games this season and secured some important points. Would be happy to see him come back.
On another note I’ve just watched MOD and seen Burnley repeating the mistakes of passing out from the back, we’ve come close to making similar howlers in the championship and it worries me already as its happening to a team that amassed over 100 points to win the championship last year and has ultimately led to their relegation.
Only two loans allowed, it’s going to be a very interesting transfer window.

I don't think there will be as much movement in the transfer window as everyone thinks, I honestly believe our current squad would be enough for PL survival. The way we play the game makes us very difficult to beat, we set up well and everyone knows their job and we have the flexibility to tweak mid game. Our players are fit and the team spirit is good. I think a couple of signings of the right type of player will leave the team spirit undisturbed. I think we will have to work hard for every point, but then we have been doing that anyway. Why disturb what's working well, I'd be more than happy to see Sarmiento & Hutch return. Bring it on.

Not for me I'm afraid, was certainly okay but with just 2 loans in the prem I think we need better.

Ipswich got promoted because of consistency. It was our record against the weaker sides that got us promotion, not against the better sides. That is exactly what we have to repeat next season to stay in the PL. Get a foothold and then we may be able to get more expansive. and further improve the squad

62: I quite agree. People bang on about the PL having so much quality , but I’d suggest that’s 98% in the top 5 clubs. The rest, are probably not that much better than the top 6 Championship. Us attempting to stay up next season won’t be how we do against that top 5, but more against the lower half of the PL. That’s where our seasons battle exists. Win that and we stay up. But we are definitely going to need PL level central defenders.

Stato added 08:05 - May 12
Bottom 3 this morning are the 3 promoted clubs. There is a gap and it's a big one. It would be arrogant if us to think our team which finished 2nd doesn't need much changing to stay up.

To make room for better quality sadly these would have to go…..Jackson Taylor Edmundson Walton Ball . I’m uncertain about Harness.

Walton's off to Celtic - link in the Mail today
I've heard Derby want Harness

His loan included an option to extend for one season if we went up, and I think personally we should take him. He knows the group, the system and the culture.
I would be looking to purchase Hutchinson, similar reasons but younger so has a greater chance of pushing on.
I know we only have two loans and we have used 5 previously but that was a means to get us TO the promised land, with £100m in the kitty to spend (ok so some of the waged will go up from the existing players I know) we will be looking to buy young players with proven quality. Nketiah and Smith-Rowe have been bandied about, do not be surprised to see that type of bold and brave move.
