Town Down to Third Following Leeds Win
Monday, 22nd Apr 2024 22:11

Town are down to third in the Championship after Leeds United defeated Middlesbrough 4-3 at the Riverside.

Boro probably deserved more from the game having gone in front through Isaiah Jones on seven before Leeds took the lead via a Crysencio Summerville penalty and Patrick Bamford on 14 and 18.

The Teessiders pulled Leeds back to 2-2 via Emmanuel Latte Lath before a controversial offside Wilfried Gnonto goal put the Whites 3-2 ahead at half-time.

Boro dominated the early stages of the second period but Summerville’s second just after the hour made it 4-2.

Michael Carrick’s men caused some late panic when Latte Lath made it 4-3 with his second of the evening three minutes from the end.

The Whites move a point ahead of the Blues into second but with only two games left to play to Town, leaders Leicester and fourth-placed Southampton’s three.

The Foxes and Saints are in action tomorrow night at the King Power Stadium, while Leeds play again on Friday when they are at QPR.

Fingers crossed for a Southampton win tomorrow night and for QPR (,who still badly need the points) to do us a huge favour,by beating Leeds on Friday night.
Then it's down to us,to hopefully get back to winning ways up at Hull.

I wonder if this is where it finally turns?...Leeds play far better against more expansive sides, can't score against Blackburn or Sunderland but get 4 tonight.

Up to us to play 3 Cup Finals...

Leeds looked a little shaky in defence tonight but created plenty of chances and got the 3 points. Both Leicester and Leeds have put wins on the board and could each be a further 3 points in credit by the time we next play. Town cant look to other teams messing up. Just got to win the games we have. Such a shame Burns and Hurst are injured as we look a little impotent, attack wise, if Moore/Hutchinson arent doing the biz. The squad have been superb this season......so close to the finish line.......3 more big efforts lads!

COYB!

Just win 3 games against teams with (probably) nothing to play for. Hull and Coventry , if Norwich win on Saturday, will have realistically zero chance of getting into the play offs and here's hoping Huddersfield are down by the time we play them.

In our hands, today changes nothing except the wiggle room!

Well it is still all in our hands. Three wins will keep us in the top two. A few draws or losses for the others will help us as long as we win ....coyb

If Leicester win tonight they're pretty much there as they'll beat Blackburn , Leeds should beat QPR on Friday and a Southampton side who'll rest players , which means we would have to win all 3 games !! That said , we Really need soton to win tonight !! Hull and Coventry away are really tough but do-able if we're on it after a rest !!! Please don't give us the stinking budgies if it's playoffs we're destined for , I don't think I could take it

3 Cup finals to go, my nerves are on edge...hopefully with a fully rested and fit squad and possible return of Burns and Hirst we can get over the line. COYB.

Its looking like the playoffs ( hope i am wrong) and its looking likely that the semi could be against that lot, i predicted after the game at PR against them and said this to Norwich supporting friends that we will beat them in particularly painful circumstances, could even be the final!

Having said that, watched a lot of games recently, there are really are no 100% should win games, a few twists to come for sure. Leeds slipping up against QPR is a real possibility, I felt like many others it was going down to the last day of the season!

Hopefully the break has done us good!

Wonder how Wes and George are doing? We need them back for the final 3,5 or 6 games (hopefully 3 )

Nothing's changed overnight. We always needed at least 7 points, and perhaps all 9, and we still do.

I'd love to get promoted, of course I would, but I am certain if we find ourselves in the Premier League next season, no matter how well we do, many of us will miss aspects of the Championship. It's a fabulous division!

Qpr won't be a gimme as they need a point for safety. It's so close at the bottom too.
A draw tom'w night between Cov and Hull woukd be the ideal result too.
Saints are missing Stuart Armstrong and will now take their foot off the pedal after Cardiff loss. I hope I'm wrong and they have a good go at Leeds on last day.

Whatever it will be then bring it on
Worst case scenario our season is extended.
And oh what a season it's been,
Thank you all at ITFC

You'll never beat Leeds if you play basketball tactics: they can outscore anyone. Hopefully QPR keep it tighter on Friday.

3 to play and we are guaranteed a Play off place, that has to be a successful season by any stretch.

This result is unacceptable to me; I had it down as a draw, if not a Middlesboro win, in my predictions chart.
The win for Leeds could well be crucial, as their goal difference is so much better than ours, it means we can't afford to draw either of our tricky away games at Hull & Coventry now. Yes we can hope for QPR to take points of them, but last night will have taken a bit of the edgyness off them, & they should have too much for QPR anyway.
This result also slams a door in Southampton's face, as they needed Leeds to be no more than 2 points ahead of them going into the last game. Not only will they probably rest most of their better players for the last game, especially if they don't beat Leicester, they would probably rather face us than Leeds in the playoffs, as they feel we got lucky a few weeks ago.
I think we probably have to beat Hull now.

I think this weeks games for all the top 4 will prove to be pivotal.. Lose and I doubt any team would make that ground up over the remaining 2 games ... Town simply must win all their last 3 games. Do that , and were up . But the burning question is , will we show up for these must win games ? Im praying that we do.....

Always fear the team that has 'nothing to play for'. I'd sooner be playing a team riddled with nerves than one playing with a freedom. I hate stats, but it's been proven over and over that a team 'on the beach' more often beats the team with something riding on it. It's ridiculous and insulting to believe that professional athletes will turn up simply to make up the numbers. It's never been the case, regardless of whether Clinton Morrison or Paul Merson tells you otherwise. We'll have to win the games by being better than the opponent. Anything else will lead to a complacency. And if the manager and players adopt the same attitude as the fans, we've no hope.

Town have had a two week break so hopefully well rested for Saturdays game, dont think much has changed really, three wins are we are promoted. What ever happens its been a brilliant ride so far and could even get better if we beat Norwich in the play-offs. We have to beat them sometime soon so lets make it Wembley if thats how it goes.

Would be a brave (or foolish) person to bet on anything, even at this late stage. Dissboy, suggestion of Hirst playing a part is unrealistic in my opinion. He's been out too long to just slot back in.

I felt that the 2 points thrown away against Boro would come back to cost us dearly...still do but hope I'm proved wrong...

A blind linesman helps, of course, and gifted Leeds 2 points they shouldn't have.

Nothing changes it’s still in OUR HANDS so not sure why some negativity is creeping in on here? The finish line is in site, town have a well rested squad with the return of Burns and possibly Hirst we are more than capable of winning the last 3 to seal promotion. QPR still require 2 points to gaurantee survival so they won’t be easy for Leeds particularly at loftus road, bearing in mind Leeds have a dreadful history in London (likes ours against Norwich lol). Southampton if they win tonight will still be in the auto race so don’t rule them out either. Whatever the results tonight and Friday KM will be looking to win at Hull (a team we demolished this season already) so I’m confident we will get 3 points sat night then take it from there.

It’s in our hands! This team will do it, the team spirit is the best in the league and we all know they will give it 100%! At worst it’s play offs but right now we are in the driving seat for 2nd spot, it’s up to us to remain in it which I’m very confident we will.

Farke, his players, the club and the fans without doubt would rather be in our position than theirs! At present Leeds know that it’s out of their control, solely reliant on us losing! It’s truly incredible to see Ipswich Town FC trading blows with the ‘bigger clubs’, they’ve come so far, I know they can push it a little further….As Leicester, Leeds, and Southampton have found out throughout this exciting season!
