Palace Reportedly Fail in Move For McKenna
Tuesday, 13th Feb 2024 15:34

Premier League Crystal Palace are reported to have been thwarted in an attempt to lure Town boss Kieran McKenna to Selhurst Park.

The Eagles, 15th in the top flight, are known to be long-time admirers of the Blues boss and, according to The Guardian, chairman Steve Parish has now spoken to McKenna’s representatives regarding the manager’s job at Palace.

However, it’s understood the 37-year-old isn’t willing to consider leaving Portman Road while the Blues are challenging for promotion to the Premier League, but with Palace said to be hopeful that he could take over at Selhurst Park at the end of the season.

The Northern Irishman, who took charge at Portman Road in December 2021, signed a new contract with Town which runs to the summer of 2027 in June last year and it’s believed any club looking to take him from Portman Road would be required to pay very significant compensation, as much as £4 million according to previous reports.

The Eagles still have Roy Hodgson in charge but their recent form - they’ve won two in 13 in the league - has led to continuing speculation that a change will be made with McKenna one bookmaker’s 7-4-on favourite to succeed the former England boss.

McKenna, who has also been mentioned in connection with the West Ham manager’s job, was quizzed on the Palace interest at last week’s press conference and insisted his concentration was on Town alone.

“My full focus, full commitment is with Ipswich and the season that we’re having and the next game ahead, so that’s where all my energy is and all my commitment is,” he said.

“I don’t pay any attention to it, to be honest. It’s not the first time in the last couple of years. If you’re doing well, it’s going to be there and there are going to be links.

“And football can work the other way pretty quickly as well. I’ll just focus on the day-to-day work here.

“As I’ve said before, I’m very proud and honoured to manage this football club and I’m enjoying doing so and will continue to do the best I can.”

You present a very weighted scenario above - "If he leaves us before acheiving anything and he flops, his future stock with surely suffer, however if he stays with us and achieves great things he will able to flop and his stock will remain intact!" - i.e. he leaves us & flops or he stays & great things will happen!
That's not the only way it can go. If he followed that logic a couple of years ago, he would still be a highly regarded coach at Manchester United, rather than a likely flop at an ailing League 1 club. But he did take that chance, that risk, because he is ambitious & has great belief in himself.
He is a very intelligent man & from all available evidence, a decent one too, but leaving one club to go to another, especially in the close season, would not negate either of those assessments of him; that's how the industry works, just like it does in the opposite way when a club wants to bring in a new manager.
At the moment he has the chance to achieve something exceptional here - back to back promotions, with the same club, into the Premier League, in his first 2 full seasons as a football manager. He is going nowhere while that opportunity remains viable for him. At the end of the season, he will either have achieved it or not; either way the chances of him leaving increase significantly. We have seen how the last 3 promoted sides have struggled, so he will be under no illusion as to task of just keeping us in the Premier League if we do go up. Simiarly, just repeating the success of this season would be a major challenge, especially without Leif Davis & maybe others next season, if we don't go up.
I think a number of posters must have 'married their high school sweethearts' & were never dumped the week after Valentines, only to see their ex dating the flash guy with the fancy car the week after that. I'm afraid you are going to have your heart broken by 'the one' here, sooner rather than later.
It was he, & his representatives, that negotiated to have a release clause put into his new contract; not the club, who would have fought to get the figure as high as possible.

….” Palace long admirers of McKenna”. That’s a joke. Until he came to Ipswich they’d probably not even heard of him and certainly weren’t of a kind to take a chance on him when he was at Utd.

Well They can f cu k right off!

It's funny how everyone says that if we don't go up KM will be leaving. Does he not have some responsibility for the results? If we go up, it is all his doing, if we don't go up, it's the fault of the players?

When Kieran signed he specifically praised the history of the club and indicated that getting it promoted back to the PL was a project that appealed greatly to him.
On all of his utterances since he arrived he has impressed me as a very intelligent man and a decent one. I also think that he appreciates the solid backing of the owners and the stability and progress of the club since those owners took over. If we get promoted the owners would have the capacity to bring in a few more top quality players to ensure that we can compete at a decent level in the PL.
I think that he will still be here for next season regardless of which division that we are in but if we did not get promotion next season, assuming that we might not this season, then I think that he could be pondering other options then. If that were to be the case I do not see him going to a Prem club with erratic owners who have very limited funds.
In the meantime I am looking forward to seeing us get promoted this season, either automatically or through the play-offs .... coyb

We have 16 games to play. A possible 48 points available. 10 wins will see top 2. Long unbeaten run incoming.

Literally a sideways move. Kieron knows the score, Spurs or
Man U.

I'm sorry to say this but this has a real possibility of getting in the heads of our players and affecting performance. We really could do without this speculation, the league situation is very tight. If we lose him at the end of the season I will be gutted, although I imagine if we do get promoted he would stay.

Football management is a strange game, many have left successful clubs, defying the the odds and failed badly (see Graham Potter - Chelsea). Lets hope we can move on quickly from this and McKenna stays for a few more years. Staying didn't do Sir Bobby any harm.

Kieran is an intelligent man. He knows what happened to Patrick Vieira at Palace and he knows what happened to Eddie Howe at Bournemouth. Which example do you think he is most likely to follow? If he goes at the end of the season, regardless of which division we are in, I would wish him well, but he will have unfinished business here and I think he will want to stay and keep on improving himself and our squad of players until we reach the ceiling of where we can get to - and we're nowhere near there yet.

The only club that may turn his head is Man Utd (where he came from)

Len Brennan my post was based around a conversation i had with a high ranking official at ITFC!

And you only have to look at how it worked out for Lampard and Gerard moving too soon before success to see my point! And look at it another way. Lambert had great success at Norwich and dined on that success for several jobs after leaving them, had he left them before any real success he may not have got the same job offers when he continued to fail post after post.

KM is very intelligent and will know when the time is right for his career to move in a different direction and he will know that time is not now!

Dissboy - Seeing as you've played the 'high ranking official at ITFC' card, I'd better keep my views on the matter to myself; all I've got is a pair of 2's.

All this speculation will Not help the players. We are all putting our own theory’s to a possible pending problem that is still in the distance. There are some very sensible suggestions on here but let’s just wait until the end of the season before we speculate further.Three points tonight is more important.

KMc has potentially a long and successful career ahead of him but he also appears to be a level headed and intelligent man. He is at a club giving him time and encouragement to progress and to us outside it seems that ITFC is being run in complete harmony. Would he get anywhere near this level of harmony with Steve Parrish as a boss. I know that I would much prefer Mark Ashton and his board.
Kieran will obviously be aware of the vagaries of football management e.g. Graham Potter from hero at Brighton to zero at Chelsea in a matter of weeks. There will be many clubs he can choose in future but I don’t think Palace would be on his radar. He will make the right decision at the right time for himself and he will leave us with our grateful thanks and wonderful memories for at the very least, two outstanding, thrill packed seasons.

It is clear that Ipswich & Mckenna are going places, hopefully together.
Palace wouldn't be a wise move as their history proves. There is no way he will leave us for South London.
On the Robson topic Bobby was a sort after manager and did agree to join Everton. But changed his mind at the last moment because of his loyalty to the Cobbold family

nothing lasts forever, and loyalty in football is a rare thing, we can only pray Kieran stays with Town .Fans need to make him know how highly we think of him and hope it counts .
