Gallagher Move Stalls
Tuesday, 16th Jan 2024 19:23

Town’s move for Blackburn Rovers striker Sam Gallagher has stalled.

News emerged at the end of last week that the Blues had been in discussions with Rovers regarding the addition of the 28-year-old.

Town are widely reported to have had a number of offers in excess of £1 million rebuffed and TWTD understands the move has made no progress over the last few days.

Quizzed on Town’s interest in Gallagher on Friday, manager Kieran McKenna kept his cards close to his chest.

According to the Daily Express, the Lancastrians have now decided they want to keep the former Southampton frontman, who is reported to be keen on the switch to the Blues.

If that’s the case, it remains to be seen whether that’s part of an ongoing negotiation process as Blackburn seek to push up the fee.

The ex-England U19 and U20 international is out of contract in the summer but with Rovers having an option for a further season, however, they are believed to be less than keen to take that additional year with Gallagher understood to be their highest earner.

Gallagher, who has also been linked with Sunderland this month, made his first appearance since September as Rovers were beaten 4-1 at West Brom at the weekend, the striker, who had been out with a calf injury, having come on as a sub in the 62nd minute.

Town are targeting two strikers before the January transfer window ends with George Hirst set to miss most of the rest of the season having undergone hamstring surgery, while Dane Scarlett returned to parent club Spurs at the end of last month.

I see we are also interested in the unsettled Union Berlin striker Scherhant scored 6 goals in 20 games in the Bundesliga 2 he; 's a strong powerful striker and won't cost too much, so let's see who arrives here

Why are we suggesting league 1 top goalscorers lladapo scored 19 yet its a step up to much for him

Rotherham seemed to think Ladapo was not up to it and nothing I've seen from him so far
has changed my mind

Not quite as expensive as Kayden Jackson, a bit more expensive than Ladapo. Might be cheaper and more effective to persevere with the players already signed to do the same job.

@BeattiesBackPocket. I'm not passing judgement on Gallagher. I couldn't possibly, as I know very little about him. I just looked at his goal-scoring record and thought it might be of interest to others to share it. But I can't speak of his all-round game, as I have hardly seen him play. And you are right about Hirst; his goal-scoring record was poor before he came here, yet he's become a firm favourite for striker (because of his all-round game) among most of our fans since joining. Although I still don't think he would get a start for Leeds, Leicester, or Southampton. But this shouldn't be a great surprise, as I imagine they have deeper pockets than us. Also, as we all know, we are still currently higher than two of them. But our overall goal difference is worse.

Been out since September with a calf injury, sounds like a long time for a 28 year old. Won't be anywhere near match fit.

I think Gallagher is very similar to Hirst and would therefore be a great addition in that he could slot in straight away and hit the ground running. For this reason he would be a great January signing.
Still, if Rovers don't want to sell then there's not much we can do. Given their financial situation, that they have little to play for this season and the players age and contract duration i'd have thought they would entertain offers. Let's see, perhaps things will move in the last few days of the window.

Cressi - his goal ratio tells you all you need to know. “Price is what you pay value is what you get” to quote Warren Buffet

For:
Tall
Strong
Experienced Championship player
Hard-working.

Against:
Significant (by our standards) fee
High wages (we are subject to FFP)
Poor goal scoring record, just 32 goals in 157 games for Blackburn (comparisons with Hirst in exact as Hirst was a young player in his first Championship season)
Older than we would usually go for, so little prospect of a sell on fee
Just back from a significant injury

I'm expecting a promising young striker that KM and his team can work on or a loan. IF we do go up we will probably invest on upgrading some players but right now we cant afford much so it's about making this promotion bid as strong as we can within our budget. Goals are not the main issue, we need a target man, a linchpin around which other players can create space and chances. Hurst was making that work without scoring loads himself.

I gather that Blackburn fans are not at all pleased with the Travis loan and even more concerned at losing Gallagher. That said, Blackburn are cash strapped and if both players want to leave then the dice is nit in Blackburn’s favour. May take a few days to sort imo.

Not what the manager has said , he says the player wants to stay .

I know January transfer market is a tough business especially with strikers but a player with only 6 months left on his contract who tbh stats are poor is not worth £1 million we can definitely do better

Dirty are you confusing stories here, I did nt read on here he wants to stay where he is, but apparently according to mowbray Stansfield wants to stay at Birmingham!

Signing a good player is one thing, signing a player who fits nicely into our club on and off pitch is another thing!
