Portsmouth Boss Tight-Lipped on Edmundson Link
Saturday, 30th Dec 2023 09:55

Portsmouth manager John Mousinho has refused to comment on reports he is interested in Town centre-half George Edmundson.

Mousinho has confirmed he is after another centre-half but wouldn’t comment on the 26-year-old directly when quizzed on his reported interest.

“I learned this the hard way in the summer, commenting on an Ipswich player in Panutche Camara and his fitness,” Mousinho told the Portsmouth News.

“The lesson I learned coming out of that was unless the player is on a free or through the door - it’s probably best when they are contracted to another club not to speak about them.

“That’s regardless of whether any rumour is true or not - so that’s what we’re going to do and not comment on that.

“We’ll make sure with the transfer policy and spending a bit of time with [sporting director] Rich [Hughes] in the hotel yesterday that we’re solid in terms of how we want to move forward. So we’ll get the game done on Monday, reassess and go from there.”

Despite his lack of first-team action this season, he has made only five appearances, it seems unlikely that the Blues would be willing to allow Edmundson to move on at the present time with two centre-halves, Cameron Burgess and Elkan Baggott, off to the Asian Cup for much of January, leaving him as one of only three senior centre-halves.

Portsmouth previously showed interest in Edmundson, who is contracted to the Blues until the summer of 2025, when he joined Rangers from Oldham in 2019 and again when he signed for Town from the Glasgow giants two years later.

Whats the lotto numbers? Great prediction to say Portsmouth will be after him in 2025 too!

Well, I'd be surprised if we don't strengthen in that position so anything is possible but we would need to strengthen first. Big time !

To be honest we need a bit of an overhaul in centre of defence whether this yr or next. In truth we prob need 0ne cf one cm and one ch asap.

Yes some of our squad are Div one but a fully fit Edmundson is a decent squad player but unfortunately he got a long standing ankle problem otherwise he would be playing more games.

Ball will be backup at centre half if Edmundson goes? Edmundson will have asked to go because he hasn’t been used and isn’t in KM plans. KM won’t let him go until the summer unless he is happy with Axel, Wolfie and Ball. Or a prem CH is coming in on loan. This would be better for long term plans as this team is a very good championship team but a long way from being a prem team.

Recall Ndaba maybe to allow Edmundson to leave ?
FFP wise may well free something up and Ndaba offers cover at LB
Whilst the ideal would be to keep Ndaba at Kilmarnock and playing each week, this offers a solution to more than one possible conundrum

Edmundson will not leave during this window as both our left sided centre backs are away. I’m sure we will recruit in this weak area but to allow George to leave at this time doesn’t make any sense.

You can only let him leave if there are definite irons in the fire as a replacement as the CB position is our biggest deficiency not withstanding the injury to Hirst of course.

I guess George is on his way to Pompey then. Good luck to him….

I’ve always really liked Edmundson when he plays. I don’t know why he hasn’t played more unless it’s just untimely injuries and the improvement in Burgess. If he does leave I’m sure the club will want more than they paid for him and Pompey can’t afford that. My understanding is we have 24 senior players with squad capped at 25 so surely someone needs to move out for us to bring people in.

An ok player at this level as back up, won't be any good for Itfc moving forward!
