Schumacher Fuming Over "Huge Turning Point"
Saturday, 28th Oct 2023 19:00

Plymouth manager Steven Schumacher said he was fuming regarding the failure to award a foul against Town defender George Edmundson for a foul on sub Mustapha Bundu just before half-time, moments before the Blues levelled during this afternoon’s 3-2 Town win at Portman Road.

“I thought the lads played unbelievably well and I just said to them I am proud of them, the efforts they put in, the way that we stuck to the plan today,” Schumacher said regarding his team’s display.
“We knew coming to Ipswich Town that they have been the best team in the league with Leicester and we knew we were going to have spells where we had to stick together and defend.

“But we did that. In the first half we defended really well and counter-attacked with a purpose.

“Our goal was outstanding. From an interception, a nice breakaway and Morgan [Whittaker] scores a brilliant goal, so I was really pleased with how the whole of the half was going.

“And then I’m obviously fuming over how we didn’t get a free-kick right on the edge of their box at a really pivotal moment in the game because what happened next was Ipswich went down the other end, got a corner and scored from it.

“So that was a was a huge turning point that went against us. It was a refereeing decision I still can’t get my head around.

“We watched it back at half-time, there’s clear contact on Mustapha and Mustapha said ‘Gaffer, he clipped my ankle’.

“I spoke to [referee] Gavin [Ward] and the linesman and they said they couldn’t see it. I think they were the only two people in the ground that couldn’t see it.

“James [Linington], the fourth official, was there next to me and said that it looked like a foul, he said it felt like a foul, so in everybody else’s eyes it was a foul.

“I’m not wanting to see people get sent off, you could argue it was a red card because Edmundson was the last men, but there were two covering defenders.

“It could have been a free-kick or a penalty, I don’t know, I’m not arguing that, but what it definitely was was a foul because what happened as well as Ipswich scoring immediately after it was George Edmundson got booked in the second half and [if he’d been booked for the first-half incident] should have been sent off.

“We ended up playing with 10 men because we had an injury [to Bundu, who went off on 84 with all their substitution windows having been used] but the ended up with 11 on the pitch, which was probably a bit fortunate.”

In EVERY close up during the game Argyle were moaning about something being wrong, our players especially the likes of Chappers play with a smile on their face. You win some and you lose some decisions, for me Edmunson got the ball first and in any case it was outside the area. Never mind onwards and upwards!!

At the time I thought fridge clipped him but having watched it from several angles I can conclude he never touched him and the Plymouth player should have been booked for diving! Schumacher will feel embarrassed when he watches it back!

It was a penalty all day lol
We got away with that one! If there was VAR it would of proved that!
Anyone know why burgess was not playing?

Hell of a game and felt nervous the entire game! Thus was a massive win and overall we deserved the win no doubt about it!
I am surprised plymouth are where they are playing like they did

Look closely at the replay / highlights. Edmondson got the ball and made no contact with Bundu. It was a very risky challenge but it was not a foul.

carsey, it was the strangest thing. The Plymouth players took a long time to do anything when they were ahead and the players rolling around on the ground were miraculously healed by either the award of a free kick or a yellow card.
I'm proud that we didn't stoop to their level.

It feels like animosity and rivalry is building between us and Argyle....

Watch the replays mr Shumacher, Edmundson got contact on the ball 1st and didn't foul the player. I must admit I thought it was a foul in real time. About the only time in the game I thought the ref played well! Well done once again to Keiron McKenna and squad, what a result against a team that were desperate to beat us. Great result once again.

Teams that consistently go down looking for fouls will get many soft decisions given but will also get genuine fouls missed because they go down too easily. I don't think it was a clear foul and maybe the ref gave fridge the benefit because the Plymouth players were going down too quickly and too often. It probably would have been a red card so if the ref is not 100% certain he won't give it because a red would have to follow. Schumacher making a mess of his subs was much more of a blatant error.

Take his point but then equally we can point to games where we should have been awarded a penalty but haven’t.

I've seen the var on the tackle from different angles he never touched him in fact bundu should have been booked for simulation..

The decision was made because he had seen Plymouth players diving around so much that he didn't want to make a critical decision that coukd be wrong. Plymouth player number 23 came on for half hour at the end. I think he spent more of the time on the floor than on his feet. Only 1 word for him....... cheat!

He really should watch the replay before criticizing the ref who had been inconsistent with his cards to that point.
It was a desperate lunge which missed both player and ball.
He may want to ask his player why he simulated a foul with only the goalie to beat - but then again not an easy goalie to score past.
Loved the bench cam too with the Schmuck screaming offside for our 2nd goal - the gulf in class between managers is crystal clear from that cam.

Sour grapes Im afraid. These calls go either way throughout a season, get over it .

I think many of the comments on here lack generosity towards Schumacher. If I supported Plymouth, I would believe it was a foul / red card. (I did at the time.) Schumacher has set his (inferior) team up brilliantly - arguably has even got the better of McKenna tactically, which no other manager has done IMO. We relied upon an outstanding goalkeeping display - else we would surely have lost. We had made all our substitutes as well by the time Bundu was forced off. That was unlucky for them - just as it would have been had one of our subs been injured late in the game.
We are SO lucky to have McKenna. I hope we hold on to him for years, but if we lost him tomorrow I don't think we could do better than get Schumacher as a replacement.
