Burgess Wins Cap as Socceroos Beaten at Wembley
Friday, 13th Oct 2023 21:46

Cameron Burgess started and won his second full cap as Australia were beaten 1-0 by England at Wembley.

The centre-half and his Socceroos teammates matched a much-changed England side and had chances to go in front before Ollie Watkins slid in behind the Blues defender to turn Jack Grealish’s low cross-shot into the net at the far post.

The 27-year-old was caught late on the ankle by Conor Gallagher in the first half - although a free-kick was awarded against the Town man - but was quickly able to continue and complete the match.

Burgess’s Town teammate Massimo Luongo was an unused substitute and will have to wait to end his four-year wait to win his 44th cap.

The Socceroos are in friendly action again against New Zealand at Brentford on Tuesday evening.

Elsewhere, Blues keeper Cieran Slicker played the full 90 minutes as Scotland’s U21s beat Hungary 3-1 in a Euro 2025 qualifier at Motherwell’s Fir Park.

Slicker, who now has 10 U21s caps, and his teammates are in action against Malta in another qualifier on Tuesday, also at Fir Park.

Town academy keeper Henry Gray, 18, was an unused sub as New Zealand drew 1-1 with DR Congo in a friendly in Spain, former Town loanee Chris Wood netting an injury time penalty for the All Whites.

Burgess played very well and was fortunate not to be hurt in that challenge - Gallagher was lucky to escape any punishment. It's a shame Luongo didn't get on but I'm sure it was a good experience for them both either way.

If there hadn't been any ITFC interest in the match, I don't think I'd have watched it all the way through - England can be pretty uninspiring to watch at times. Australia arguably deserved a result.

It was a dull performance by England and makes you appreciate all the more the style of football we get to see at PR every week. Aussie goalkeeper was well jittery and I don’t really remember him making any good saves. He half came then back tracked for the goal which gave England the second phase.

I thought Cam had a good game against much higher opposition (even if they didn't shine all that much) than he is used to meeting in the Championship. This should give him even more confidence for the league games ahead. Great experience and well done!

A great learning experience for Cam especially with the goal. He’ll watch that back a few times I guess. I thought the Aussi back four was imperial, especially Souter and Burgess which, like at Ipswich, allowed the forward players to go and play their football. England were FS but mostly due to the Aussies. It wasn’t just a bus/parking exercise despite the commentators repeatedly suggesting it was. I think that was to cover up England’s ineptitude.

The England B team were so poor in central midfield with the pedestrian Henderson and headless chicken Gallagher. Southgate was lucky to get another win against mediocre opposition. Burgess looked composed on the ball despite having a goalkeeper behind him who was giving me the jitters. Souttar was the stand out performer for the Aussies.

What a proud moment for Burgess to play against England at Wembley. He did himself and ITFC proud. Very assured and comfortable on and off the ball.

Australias best player rating on bbc, may be skewed by town fans but shows he can make the step up

Southgate out……! Your football is dire…..Almost Mick Ma….esk.
Never been so uninterested in England games…
Henderson starting and Mcquire anywhere near the squad is bizarre to say the least.
Thought Burgess overall looked decent

Nomore4 and SpiritofJohn - I think it is unfair to generally pick out any players as uninspiring in the England team as it isn't the choice of personnel but the sheer lack of urgency the team always display, no matter who plays, which is always the problem. That's down to the strategy of the coaching staff. The opposition are always allowed plenty of time to reset, which is completely baffling.
Yet another very dull game - have to agree with Fat_Boy_Tim. Good experience for Burgess though.

Burgess had a solid performance! Nothing much got past him, his distribution was exceptional and has probably just added an extra few quid to his value!

If it helps, I watched a disjointed Ireland whimper out of qualifying, slim a chance as it was.

Congratulations to Burgess, who did himself proud. Frankly, Southgate's teams have for some time displayed everything that is wrong about out of date, slow, defensive football - ironically whilst having pretty much the most talented squad of players in the world to use. It is in stark contrast to the fantastic fast, free-flowing, brave football being played by McKenna's Ipswich. Southgate has only done well by being given the best squad of players in decades to manage, and has wilted when the chips were down. What a waste.
