Morsy Left Out of Final Egypt Squad
Thursday, 5th Oct 2023 12:00

Blues skipper Sam Morsy has been left out of the Egypt squad for their October friendlies.

The 32-year-old, who won his eighth and ninth caps last month, his first international appearances since November 2018, was named on a provisional 11-man list of foreign-based players set to be called up, but was omitted from the final party named this morning.

The Pharaohs are set to play two friendlies at the Hazza bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi against Zambia on Thursday 12th October and then Algeria on Monday 16th October.

Prior to last month’s matches, the Town captain had previously been named in several overseas lists before being omitted from the final squad.

Elsewhere, fellow midfielder Jack Taylor has again missed out on a Republic of Ireland call. The former Peterborough man was named in squads prior to joining Town without making his senior international debut, but not since making his move to Suffolk.

With hindsight it is probably a good thing with all the matches he is playing at 200% for us? Have a short rest Samy with the family instead............

Don’t know IF they realise what they’re missing, but if it means ITFC will have him to play — hoorah !!

Good for us, sorry for him. If we were a Premier club, he'd have been playing

Well that is a bit of an oversight on their part. It will be their loss.

Egypt must have some stellar midfielders in their squad, that's all I can say.

Fingers crossed this means we don't lose him for 4-6 weeks in January for the African Cup of Nations. Especially as that's when we have to go to Leicester among other key games.

As people say - no idea who could be keeping him out of that Egypt side, but let's not question... ;o)

Come on Egypt! Hope they do so well over their friendlies that there is no chance of a call up for Morsy in January....

He fully deserves to be in that squad, even starting line up. I am sure that he would have loved to be involved, but I would much rather all our squad was overlooked for these games. Get a bit of rest and then full steam ahead till January.

Would hate to be in Sam’s shoes if he does get selected in January but selfishly I hope that if he does get selected,he says “thanks but no thanks”. Such are his performances, leadership and influence that losing him for a month could be the difference between our gaining promotion or not. And surely Sam would want to be in the EPL once in his career..

I'm currently in Egypt and have spoken to a few locals about Morsy - all who were pleasantly surprise that I had not only heard of him but that he plays for our club. The verdict is that he is not popular with fans on Egyptian social media. Sounds like he is underrated here. Perhaps because the champ is not widely watched

Has anybody seen Egypt play recently. Like Morocco they are of a very high standard. Very energetic and fluent. Whilst Morsy is tenacious and combative, he also unfortunately moves the ball far too slowly at times. He'd actually look very out of place in their style and system.
