Page: Burns Pulled Hamstring
Sunday, 10th Sep 2023 20:31

Wales manager Rob Page has revealed that Blues wideman Wes Burns pulled a hamstring during his side’s 0-0 friendly draw with South Korea in Cardiff on Thursday.

Burns came on as a 60th minute sub and won his fifth cap - as did Town teammate Nathan Broadhead - at the Cardiff City Stadium.

This morning, the FAW announced that Burns and Nottingham Forest keeper Wayne Hennessey would not be flying to Latvia for Monday’s Euro 2024 qualifier in Riga due to injuries.

Speaking at a press conference this evening, Page says he always feared that the friendly might lead to players having to drop out.

“We can’t wait for it, we’re looking forward to it, we’re off the back of a positive performance against Korea,” he said.

“I didn’t want the game because I didn’t want to risk injuries. We’ve picked up an injury from that game.

“But there were lots of positives to come out of it, so it was beneficial exercise but I always had one eye on the most important thing, which is this one tomorrow night.”

Quizzed on who had picked up the injury, he added: “Wes came on and he’s tweaked his hamstring. We’ve got a duty of care to the player and for the club as well, so I think it was too risky to bring him. He’s pulled his hamstring, so it’s best off to send him back.”

Meanwhile, Blues legend Chris Kiwomya led his British Virgin Islands side to their first win in more than 11 years on Saturday when they beat the Turks & Caicos Islands 3-1 in the CONCACAF Nations League at the AO Shirley Recreation Ground in Road Town. Kiwomya, 53, has been manager of the BVI since October 2021.

Brilliant. Injured players from pointless friendlies.

Redrickstuhaart. Could just as easily have done it in training.

2 or 3 weeks ago, this would have been a big concern, but a far more mature performance from Hutchinson, against Cardiff, demonstrates the impact that McKenna has already had on his game.
To be honest, I was a bit worried that he was going to a box of tricks, who would do something brilliant one minute, & then give away possession cheaply, in a dangerous area, the next; but he worked hard, tracked back & made good use of possession in that game. He's learning, but crucially he seems to be leaning fast.
We also have Brandon Williams now, who could play an advanced right sided roll if needs be.

Who said we didn’t need to add to the Squad, only a short while back ?
We are only just into September, but the Treatment Room is already busy !
Ling Season ahead, and Autumn / Winter pending.

tetchris, where do you get six weeks from? Read the whole article. ‘He’s tweaked his hamstring’ ‘it was too risky to bring him’ That suggests he may have been fit enough for Monday’s game but they didn’t want to chance it. As I see it, he could be ok by next weekend but we’ll have to wait and see. We’ve strengthened the squad down the right anyway so no need to rush him back in.

@Tetchris, do you know something the rest of us don't? If so, name your source if not WTF you on about?

Oh dear. We are doomed! Losing a crucial player in a friendly for months on end is an absolute disgrace - especially as it is a nation going nowhere on the international stage. Now the best we can probably hope for is mid-table I suspect.

Pessimistic. Thank you for lightning the mood. Your irony tickled me.

That just great a injury from a pointless friendly

Is it just me or are friendlies more trouble than they are worth?

We have a maxed out squad of 25 and it doesn't sound too serious. However, sounds like we are doomed reading some of the above. It's all part of football and come Saturday we will win, loose or draw and whatever we do it won't be because of this.

My word, what a funny bunch some of you are. It could have easily happened in the behind closed doors friendly with Wet Spam. Injuries are part of football. I’d much rather he was out playing with Internationals, than sitting at home in cotton wool.

I’m not actually bothered tbh . I want to see Hutchinson given a run in the side along with Williams ( replacing the Achilles tendon blighted Clark (he can’t run very well atm so rest and rehab him properly).

Hutch & Williams worked so well together when they came on - they changed the game. Time for a change I think!

Very much with ArnieM. Our squad has quality throughout.

So to those that down arrowed , you’d be happy to play players carrying injuries would you, really??

The injury to Burns seems to be good news to some people on here. His value to the team is crucial not only in an attacking sense but also he tracks back and works hard for the team and this is why McKenna rates him as a automatic choice when fully fit.

ArnieM added 09:17 - Sep 11
If he plays how he can okay then yes he’s an automatic choice without doubt. But I personally don’t think he’s been at his best for a while now and I’m glad we’ve finally got competition for places down that right side. Read what you like in to it.

Not sure everyone will agree with me on this one but I'm perfectly fine with Jackson filling in at RW, with Hutch coming on as sub at 60 mins. Not a massive loss for us.

algarvefan added 09:49 - Sep 11
Kentish I'm with you, Jackson has been superb on the wing and creating goals too, his work rate is second to none. I'd rather start with Burns of course and hopefully the 'tweak' is not serious.

Yes Hutchinson's time to shine...really don't think Burns has been doing that well since the start of the season anyway.

We have options for sure but where is all this "he'll be out for weeks" coming from. This is exactly the same tweaked hamstring that Sam Morsy suffered against Cardiff and he was fit for international duty 4 days later. Unless we have clairvoyant physios in our. ranks may I suggest we wait and see what the club have to say before we all go off hanging ourselves whilst singing men of Harlech and denouncing the Leak as unworthy??..... NURSE!!!
