Town Working on Scarlett Loan Signing
Thursday, 31st Aug 2023 11:18

Town are working on the loan signing of Tottenham Hotspur striker Dane Scarlett.

A number of Spurs sources are reporting that Scarlett will join the Blues having signed extended terms at White Hart Lane and we understand that to be the case. The deal could be completed as soon as today.

TWTD revealed in March that Scarlett was among the players Town had been keen on in the January window and the move comes as little surprise.

Scarlett, 19, came through the academy ranks at White Hart Lane where Blues boss Kieran McKenna was U18s coach prior to his spell at Manchester United.

The England U15, U16, U19 and U20 international spent last season on loan at Portsmouth, scoring six goals in 24 starts and 16 sub appearances.

For his parent club, the 5ft 11in tall frontman has made three senior starts - all in the Europa Conference League - and seven sub appearances, two in the Premier League without finding the net.

In October last year, following the Blues’ 3-2 victory over Pompey, Blues boss McKenna revealed how highly he rates Scarlett.

“One of the only players they have who doesn’t have Championship experience is one of the best young strikers in world football, in my opinion, in Dane Scarlett,” McKenna said.

Although not on target in that game, Scarlett scored at Portman Road in Portsmouth's 2-0 victory over the Blues in the Papa Johns Trophy in November.

Scarlett will become Town's sixth signing of the summer with the transfer window closing at 11pm on Friday evening.

Makes me laugh that some here had no criticism for Ipswich in the 15 years of Evans failure but suddenly they’re critical when we have the best quality squad we’ve had in at least 8 years, possibly longer! You blow my mind

It's not all about adding new players, but also further developing the ones we have and becoming better organised, particularly in defence.

Decent experienced CB’s more of a pressing issue at this level than a 19yr old loanee striker in my humble view.

Bluearmy_81 It´s just not about that. Our squad IS good. Our start HAVE been great.
But Ashton and McKenna has repeatedly said that they want more players in (Ashton even saying that 2 or 3 were well down the line).
That is a slight concern. I want us to develop and be the best we can be this season.

TractorClarke I agree with you that we shouldn't panic. I believe that our #1 starting team is absolutely good enough to compete successfully in this league.

My only concern (and your comments highlight this) is that we get weak when people are injured. To me, this is the reason to be recruiting new talent.

“One of the best young strikers in the world” acknowledges KM and I suspect he knows how to get the player performing to show this. KM himself is rapidly becoming one of the best young coaches in this country and this could be an excellent opportunity for this young player.
Excited by this.

He was excellent at the start of last year on loan at Portsmouth but seemed to fall away. But I doubt he had the coaching that he will get with us. Could be a good signing.

I think he will return to Spurs a better player which is exactly why they would like him to come to us. Having a some with a reputation and track record as a great coach as your manager bears fruit in a very competitive loan market. Hirst, Ladapo, Jackson and Scarlett should be an effective quartet. Also how smart was McKenna to make that comment? I’m sure it was planning ahead for who we wanted.

This looks like a good idea, we need another more dynamic striker than Ladeapo, but lets be honest this guy isn't coming in as main striker unless he bangs in 2 a game from subs bench to be our main No 9 as that will hopefully be Hirst's role. As a result loaning in another striker or defender makes perfect sense if the loan is initially intended to only be as cover. With the rediculous wages in Prem atm (Brandon Williams is reportedly on £60k a week), there is no way we can purchase these players or pay their full wages, and they aren't leaving their Prem club to take a £50k a week pay cut so yes loanees is the way forward.

Naylorsrightboot. Constantly talking bs. Clearly u not at reading on Tuesday. Williams was excellent. And before u mentionctge own goal, was a goalkeeping error. Nothing he could do about it. U don't see the point of loans? So hirst was a waste of time last season was he? Loans are ok for the likes of man utd, and other pl teams, other championship teams, but not for us? No, we don't want a load of loans, but a few are fine. And whether you like it or, not,we still have to be aware of ffp. Csntcjust go out and throw money at it. If we could, im sure we would

Naylorsrightboot - Agree with you - but you are not allowed to speak Truth on here, you have to be deluded, and permanently in Hissy Fit mode.
Without much needed signings of the required Standard - just watch that all change …. !!!

We aren't weak offensively and have an abundance of goalscoring options. We are however weak defensively. Leeds filled their boots, and but for a large stroke of fortune...Sunderland and QPR didn't. That has to be the priority. At Reading on tuesday I was very impressed by Baggott and would have no qualms if he were called upon. Edmundson looks accomplished at times but often gets caught out claiming imaginary fouls when not touched. Defensively is what I believe will keep us well away from challenging this season.

What a lot of moaning Minnie’s on here. I trust the club’s judgement and that’s all that matters.
I cannot understand the sniping at Williams and Hadlky. The latter has made some terrific saves and the former was very unlucky with the og. He went onto to have a good game.

Agree Pezzer. He started last season well but fell away when pompey as a team fell away..
He looked good in an attacking team and has plenty of pace so hopefully he will fit in well with our style of play.
Got to be honest one of the best forward signings this year by any team in the championship has to be Hurst if 1.5 m is the actual cost. So many others on inflated fees and if he scores 10-15 goals this year he is gonna be worth 8-10 m at today's rates.

Exactly TimmyH - ordinarily, I would regard this as a slightly risky signing, but McKenna knows tha player & clearly rates him so we will have to see. More exciting than signing ageing journeymen strikers.

What happened to the strategy of own and build too many loans thought we would have learnt our lesson!

Orraman added 14:40 - Aug 31
KM knows the lad and will improve him as he has done others. No problem with loans such as this as due to ffp we cannot splash out on ready made PL quality. The addition of players such as Scarlett add strength to the squad and can help us remain in at least a playoff challenging position

Says Blueboy the most deluded of all posters!!!
Let’s remind you of some of your deluded comments from last season. Piggot will be a better player under Cowley and come the end of the season we would regret it! He wasnt and we didn’t!
You also stated that the recruitment policy at Ipswich wasn’t good enough to get us promoted! It was and we were!
You also said that he had been found and was it around feb/march time you stated that McKennas position was under under threat! You called anybody who enjoyed last season a happy clapper, those of us who knew something good was coming were right to enjoy the last campaign
You were covered in egg, hardly a football genius you looked very foolish at the seasons end!

6 played 5 won, I will take that!

I feel strange saying this but I’d hoped we’d bring in someone with a bit more experiane leading a line solo at this level or equivalent. We need the out ball and we have a lot of players with potential but not necessarily blooded and proven at this level.

Ideally over 6ft and very mobile but that’s a hard combination to come by in this price bracket.

Either way I hope he’s lights us up and McKenna is proven right once again.

I’d also like to keep Edwards as I think he’s further along that Hutchinson from the limited minutes I’ve seen of him.
