Donacien Out, Burgess and Hirst Facing Fitness Tests
Friday, 25th Aug 2023 14:35

Full-back Janoi Donacien has been ruled out of Saturday’s home game with Leeds United with a the groin injury he suffered at QPR last week, while Cameron Burgess and George Hirst are both doubts.

Donacien limped off in the first half of the Blues’ 1-0 win at Loftus Road last weekend and manager Kieran McKenna confirmed that the St Lucia international will miss the visit by the Whites.

“He’s not going to make it for the weekend,” he said. “Small groin strain on top of some other issues in and around that area that he has. Possible for Cardiff, but not available for tomorrow.”

McKenna says Burgess and Hirst have also picked up problems and will be assessed before the match.

“We have a couple, who we need to check for tomorrow,” he continued. “Cameron Burgess has a little issue with his ankle and George Hurst has an issue with his adductor, so both will have checks in the morning to see whether they’re available for the game.”

Regarding Harry Clarke, who came on for Donacien in the 37th minute against QPR, having missed the previous week's game against Stoke with an ongoing achilles problem which is being managed, McKenna added: “We think it's moving in the right direction. Last week he was probably pre-planned to play maybe 30 minutes and it ended up probably more like 60-plus.

“In the end, it was good for him because he came through it no problems. He's trained well this week, still modifying him a little bit. But it's certainly moving in the right direction. So he's ready for tomorrow.”

Suspect checking in the morning means they "should" be ok, fingers crossed

Hirst out would be a huge blow. Makes you realises that only having two recognised strikers probably isn’t enough so I expect we’ll address that in the next week

So, like I’ve been saying we need x2 CB’s. Just a couple of injuries changes everything about our back line

We need that striker and centre back. If both Hirst and Burgess are out it will show how weak we are in those areas. Hopefully 2 signings next week before the deadline.

A good chance for Ladapo to show us he is still one of our main strikers !

Could Broadhead be pushed forward and play as a striker? No panic, but I do feel we need a couple of players in before the transfer window close.

JD has been giving the ball away at an alarming rate, and usually in very dangerous areas. At QPR I wondered whether he'd put his boots on the wrong feet!! So whilst his omission strengthens us, the loss of Burgess and Hirst would be a blow, and as mentioned by several....highlight our weakness in Central defence where the replacements are some way off what is required at this level.

I was at Loftus Road last week ( in the home end ) and imo Hirst was poor he kept on falling over and didn't square it to Burns for a tap in when he was wide open. Ladapo is a workhorse but his he will get found out at this level. I hope he proves me wrong.

I feel we only need two sigings don't want to repeat the mistakes of the Evans regime of having a bloated squad. This will be the hardest game of the season so far so lets hope we get an early goal and PR is rocking COYB

Eeek- the Tuesday night games haven't started yet
Dom Ball at the back, Jackson in attack ?
is Edmundson fit ?

A left sided CB, a striker and a right mid are on my shopping list for next week.

The extra physical demands of the championship are going to cause more injuries than last season. We must get at least two if not three more players in. I don't think the players on the fringe of the first team are up to championship standard.

Williams right wing back then? Dom Ball in the centre?

And there you are. Back to usual pathetic negative self. You and naylorsrightboot. " and just 3 games into the season?" What's that meant to mean? We have a couple of injuries. Yes. Hardly the only club who has players injured. Yes, we've let a defender go. And we've replaced him. And as the only defenders injured are cbs, Leigh would have been uikely to replace them anyway. When we have edmondson amd Baggott . Justxatop talking rubbish

If Burgess doesn't make it tomorrow - and I hope he does as he has been excellent - we have Baggott as a natural like for like replacement. No need to panic IMO. Hirst injury is also worrying but Freddie has a similar work rate. Leeds have lost players through transfers and have had more disruption than us so still plenty of grounds for optimism.

And this is why we badly need decent back-up for Hirst...somebody who's willing to work as hard and run himself into the ground for this club.

Can understand people miffed about Hirst maybe missing out( I’m in that category as not sure whether Ladapo is championship level) but what I don’t understand is that EVERY time Baggott plays he gets rave reviews and sometimes mom, would be a blow if Burgess does miss out as for me, he has had a great start to the season and been excellent. But I’d rather play Baggott if needed over Dom Ball as some are saying might play, it’s not as if he’s being chucked in at the deep end, as if my memory is right he has played in championship before?

As blues1 says, usual negativity from the usual culprits. I'm sure we have targets we don't know anything about just like Broadhead who most of us hadn't heard of. The Williams transfer has been going on for some time.
I would remind everyone that the fountain of wisdom, Blueboy1981 was calling for KM to be sacked 8 or 9 months back, perhaps he still wants it to happen.

As good as or better than what we have is what the club wants to get in the door. That's not easy if you don't throw silly money around and ITFC will not pay over the odds. This club is being run the right way and we must be patient. KM has showed us already that he knows exactly what sort of player he wants.

Cadiar - get your Facts right before spouting, I have never asked or suggested McK be sacked.
That is Fact - so DON’T make things up !
