Town in Talks to Sign Manchester United's Williams
Tuesday, 22nd Aug 2023 18:03

Town are in talks regarding the signing of Manchester United left-back Brandon Williams.

The move, understood to be a loan with an option to buy, is not yet done with the parties still in discussion.

If it goes through, the switch will allow Greg Leigh to leave the Blues to join Oxford United, as reported yesterday.

Williams came through the academy at Old Trafford, where Blues boss Kieran McKenna worked prior to joining Town, and has made 30 first-team appearances for the Red Devils, scoring one goal, including 13 Premier League starts, the most recent in 2020/21.

Last season, the 22-year-old made one senior appearance for United, as a late sub in a Carabao Cup victory over Burnley and he is yet to have any involvement this season.

Manchester-born Williams, who although right-footed prefers to play on the left, spent the 2012/22 season on loan at Norwich City during their Premier League relegation season, making 25 starts and four sub appearances.

The stint at Carrow Road ended unhappily when he was abused by a group of Canaries supporters who had waited for him outside the ground following his final game, a 4-0 home defeat by West Ham.

Williams subsequently posted posted a photo of his dog, apparently as a warning, and a middle finger gesture on social media before removing the posts.

The 5ft 7in tall defender is contracted to United until next summer with the club having an option for a further season.

Earlier in the week, Saturday's opponents Leeds United were credited with interest in the full-back.

IF K M ( & MA ) believe he’s the correct addition in footballing terms ,character and ability ,and judge he fits the profile they’re trying o build for ITFC ,then that’s more than good enough for me !
I have no reason to doubt how our smashing Club is being run and improved ,and IF the aim s to build for the future from a younger base ,moulded by our coaches the let’s give them nothing but the fullest support as they continue their endeavours .
If we complete the signing K M will provide more detail .

One In - One Out ….. is not what we need, we need to add to the Squad.
Play around, drag your feet in the Championship - and we will get punished !!

Some Naarwich fans believed he made "costly errors," hence the abuse (by a minority, it must be said). However, his pedigree (13 PL starts, etc.) suggest there is surely something there to build on. I am confident Kieran McK is the man to bring out Brandon's talent - assuming he signs of course.

PS: Those of you saying we shouldn't sign ex-Naarwich, BW doesn't appear to be enamoured of the Canaries. I can only imagine that he would delight in joining the rival of the club that he left under somewhat of a cloud. A BW goal in the derby is a nice fantasy, unlikely though it may be.

Trevor Putney was a decent signing even though we were decining then, which was no fault of his. As for not wanting an ex on loan budgie, Harry Kane had a spell on loan there, would anyone turn him down if he were offered to us?

I read earlier that he came third in their player of the year awards so he can’t have had too bad a season.

If he signs for us he’s a blue and all links forgotten as anyone wearing the shirt and battling for 3 points every weekend should get everyone’s backing!

It's a no from me. Saw him play a number of times & not been impressed. Maybe Mckenna sees something he can improve upon

I'm not that excited by this, I really like Greg Leigh and think he is on a par with Leif.

Having said that I trust KMK and his team, lets wait and see what happens rather than arguing with each other.

Algarvefan, have a lay down, Leigh on par with Davis? I really appreciate Leigh as he’s been a great member of the squad and never let the side down when called upon but to say he’s on par with Davis is a wild shout. Ps I’m not arguing.. it’s simply a game of opinions

Davis-most assists in league one. Different level to Leigh. Some on here clueless….

We only buy players we can improve, and at an age that 5 years on they are still ours and awesome.
We are going to be something special.

On digging deeper, anyone else concerned with some of the reports of a bit of an attitude problem Williams seems to have?
Example: https://metro.co.uk/2023/06/11/man-utd-star-aims-dig-at-man-city-rio-ferdinand-a
I'm sure KM & other staff know him well & will vet him & keep on top of that if he signs, but hope that doesn't become an issue with his attitude.
Seems a decent player, but we've had our fair share of issues with players over the years.

So in naylorsrightboot infinite wisdom don't get in any other decent players in any other position we may need until we sign those two positions first lol you can't make it up the stupidity of that comment. So miss out until we sign people you want.
I've seen other daft comments of into spending enough or not selling the project from the odd person as well. Where's your proof on this?? As has been said many many times until prem clubs are nearer announcing their squads players don't filter down to the championship and so on. Also spending millions on a by one player doesn't guarantee success I remember those same people moaning we had no ambition or could sell the club to Simms well 8 million and 3 games in and he's struggled already. Sheff weds spent money that those same couple of people commented on how's that working out?? Answers on a postcard please you 3 or 4??

Also ex Norwich?? Hardly he’s no affinity to that club he wasn’t brought through by them he played on loan in the premier league that’s it! He didn’t sign a contract just a loan.
