Edwards: It Was a Really Difficult Game
Wednesday, 26th Jul 2023 15:05

Luton Town boss Rob Edwards believes the Blues will cause a lot of problems in the Championship in the season ahead, admitting that last night’s 1-1 draw between his newly-promoted Premier League side and Kieran McKenna’s team was a tough match.

Wes Burns’s cross-shot gave the Suffolk side the lead with the Hatters levelling late on via a Carlton Morris penalty.

“It was a really difficult game,” Edwards told his club’s official website. “That is why we wanted to play Ipswich, because they are a good team and will cause a lot of problems this season in the Championship.

“That’s why we wanted that style of game because going forward, we’ll get that style of game at a higher level.

“We've picked up no injuries, we are starting to push one or two players as well by giving 90 minutes to a few. Some of the new players are getting a feel for what we are about, so there were positives there.

“Still lots to work on, I have to stress that straight away. It’s not to sound negative, but I just spoke to the boys and that team out there isn’t what I anticipate it to be in a couple of weeks [when the season proper gets under way].

“The group itself will remain very similar, but there will be some changes. We’ve got some work to do, I’ve got some work to do on the grass.

“We have to be a bit better with our decision making, especially in the first half. Out of possession we could have been better, which is down to me.

“There are bits to work on, but there were plenty of positives tonight, I think about the individuals and the minutes they got. It’s another good shift in the bank, building up to Saturday at Sheffield Wednesday which will be another difficult game.”

Some very positive comments from opposition manager’s already this pre season.
Hard not to believe that we may yet be a strong contender in the top 8.
I’m hoping now that with a couple making way, we bring in another One or Two quality additions ahead of the big kick off and then potentially add some more depth or indeed quality again in January if we really are in a good position to kick on and see where we end up come May.

People running away with their expectations this Season with what we have, and are - need to be Cautious - there will be NO easy points to be had in the Championship - this is not League 1 now !!
Out Defence could be the Achilles Heal - as evidence would suggest.
Mistakes WILL be punished !!

It’s hard to disagree with CB and BB ; but KM is a total realist , an exceptional thinker and coach AND a dedicated student of the game and tactics . Pretty certain he’ll have no inflated expectations ,and the evidence thus far tells us just how hard he’s working our group and influencing the newcomers .
Let’s be the great support of last season and enjoy the ride ( AGAIN) — not forgetting all the effort to install a new pitch and improve our lovely PRd .

Blueboy how about some ying and Yang with your comments?? Everyone including McKenna and Ashton know the areas we need to strengthen but how come wile have to listen to your constant negativity when we draw or lose but you never seem to comment on a decent draw or win?? It’s laughable.

Rob Edwards wanted to play us, thought we were decent, but was not expecting to get out played. However this is still pre season, we did not score a proper goal, and were not able to keep a clean sheet. Work to do on and off the pitch still to be considered even play off contenders, but plenty to be positive about.

The negativity from some comes from fear...you build the opposition up in your minds as supermen and forget they are just 11 against our 11..KmK won't show fear neither will the players..they are preparing well..working hard towards the season start..knowing that if they do the right things results will come. .. realistic to know there will be ups and downs ..so let's forget the fear .embrace the challenge and enjoy seeing our club take on the league and some strong football clubs...

Rob Edwards probably did expect to be outplayed because his team don’t try to outplay their opponents. What he wanted was to play someone in the style of teams in the Prem. outside the Prem, we are one of those sides. We wanted to play a team who are really good at direct, physical football and Luton are exactly that.
